Specialist Tour | An Hour with the Four
This always popular tour offers a chance to look in detail at works by 'The Four': Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Margaret Macdonald, Frances Macdonald and James Herbert McNair. From early collaborative graphic works to exquisite watercolours, furniture design and interior decoration this tour led by Alison Brown, Curator for European Decorative Art and Design 1800-present, gives an insight into the history, making and symbolism of their work and of some of their contemporaries. Early booking is advised.
Specialist Tour | African Women, Myth and Material Memory
African myth and folklore play a central role in shaping cultural identity, belief systems and collective memory. Moving between historic wooden artefacts and contemporary works, this tour explores how African women, spiritual power and myth have been represented and, at times, misunderstood. Join Gallery Assistant and African art enthusiast Lizzie Eidson as she examines sculptural and painted depictions of African women across time, drawing on Ethiopian, Mende and wider African oral traditions, alongside Yoruba-inflected ideas, to consider how these narratives have been erased and reanimated in contemporary practice.
