Initially, he explored a jagged, guitar-oriented post-punk with his group Adam and the Ants before giving way to a more pop-oriented, glam-tinged musical direction that brought him to the top of the charts. After that had run its course, he refashioned himself as a mainstream singer, which enabled him to stretch his career out for a couple of years. Once it seemed that his musical career had evaporated, he made an unexpected comeback in the early '90s as an adult alternative artist. During all this time, he recorded several great pop singles and had a surprisingly large impact on alternative rock.

Arvo Pärt’s haunting _Cantus _is the perfect complement to a wonderful new work from Elena Langer, inspired by the songs of birds and the nature poetry of Glyn Maxwell. The Divine Comedy

The Divine Comedy

27 Mar 2026 - 8 Jul 2026

Since The Divine Comedy’s inception in 1989, Neil Hannon has time and again proved to be one of the UK’s best and most original songwriters. 2016's Foreverland exemplifies this, with references to everything from Catherine The Great to the French Foreign Legion. Neil says of the new record, ‘it’s about meeting your soul mate and living happily ever after… and then what comes after happily ever after. Get ready for the most historically inaccurate hit of the summer’. While not releasing a record since 2010’s Bang Goes The Knighthood, Neil Hannon has certainly kept himself busy. He co-wrote a second album for acclaimed cricket-themed project, The Duckworth Lewis Method, composed a choral work for the Royal Festival Hall’s newly renovated organ entitled ‘To Our Fathers In Distress’, and oversaw the transfer of his musical, Swallows And Amazons, to the West End stage.

Howard Jones

Howard Jones

12 Nov 2025 - 22 Nov 2025

It was in 1983 that Howard Jones first burst upon the contemporary music scene with his very English songwriting, pioneering synthesizers and thought provoking lyrics. He set out his manifesto in his very first single ‘ New Song’. The lyrics called on the listener to challenge their preconceived ideas, to see both sides and ‘throw off your mental chains’. ´New Song´ was recently used in a pivotal scene in ‘Breaking Bad’ where Aaron Paul’s character Jessie Pinkman questions if he wants to ‘play by the rules’. ´New Song´ peaked at number 3 in the UK singles charts. Along with ‘New Song’, The first two albums, ‘Humans Lib’ and ‘Dream into Action’, brought Howard a host of hits including ‘Things Can Only Get Better’, ‘What is Love?’, ‘Pearl In The Shell’, ‘Like to Get To know You Well’, ‘Hide And Seek’ (performed at Live Aid), ‘Look Mama’ and ‘No One Is To Blame’, which reached No.1 in the US. Howard has sold over 8 million albums across the globe and is one of a select group of British artists who have comprehensively ‘broken America’. Howard Jones solo shows are an intimate trip through Howard´s 30 year music career. Many of his best known songs were composed on his favourite instrument; the piano. Howard shares behind the scenes stories and reveals the inspiration behind the songs in these rare acoustic shows.

Colin Hay

Colin Hay

17 Nov 2025 - 23 Nov 2025

Blessed with an easy charm and a gift for melody, Colin Hay parlayed his success as the chief singer/songwriter for the Australian new wave titans Men at Work into a long career as a troubadour and occasional actor. Hay stumbled slightly at the outset of his solo career, with his 1987 debut Looking for Jack failing to maintain the mass audience he earned with the blockbuster success of Men at Work. By the end of the 1990s, Hay sowed the seeds for what became an enduring career. He turned away from major labels and founded his own indie Lazy Eye; he backed away from arena rock and began singing sweet folk-pop, he embraced his adopted hometown of Los Angeles and found a creative foil in Cecilia Noel, a Peruvian singer he'd later marry. Hay also happily returned to such Men at Work hits as "Who Can It Be Now," "Down Under," and "Overkill," finding a receptive patron in Zach Braff, who featured Hay's music in his 2004 film Garden State and his sitcom Scrubs, giving the singer a boost in popularity in the early 2000s.

Chasin' the Horizon: The Railway Suite with the SNJO and SNYJO
For more than a century, jazz musicians have travelled the world by train, drawing inspiration from the distinctive rhythms, atmosphere, and romance of the rails. Trains not only provided a means of transport, but also became a powerful symbol of movement, progress, and musical exploration - connecting cities, cultures, and creative minds. The steady pulse of the tracks, the whistle’s call, and the fleeting landscapes glimpsed from carriage windows all found their way into the sound and spirit of jazz. This enduring relationship has produced some of the genre’s most iconic compositions. John Coltrane’s Locomotion, Glenn Miller’s Chattanooga Choo Choo, Mary Lou Williams’ New Musical Express, and a host of works by Duke Ellington—including Toot Suite, Across the Track Blues, Deep South Suite, Sepia Panorama, Daybreak Express, and Take the A Train - each echo the rhythm and romance of railway life. These pieces do more than just reflect a mode of travel; they celebrate the cultural and social intersections that the railway enabled, particularly in a time when jazz was evolving as a vibrant expression of identity and resistance. Today, as the world grapples with the realities of climate change, this historic affinity takes on renewed significance. At a time when sustainable travel has become an urgent priority, the train emerges once again as a practical and symbolic vehicle—allowing artists to tour responsibly while honouring the legacy of those who rode the rails before them. For the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, the railway is more than a route - it is a rhythm, a story, and a commitment. Our commitment to climate-conscious touring aligns naturally with this heritage, as we seek to connect with audiences across regions while reducing our environmental impact. The Railways Suite is both a tribute and a statement of intent: a celebration of jazz’s locomotive past and a reflection of our shared journey toward a more sustainable future - one track at a time.

The Bagpipes - A Cultural and Musical History: Richard McLauchlan and John Mulhearn with Fergus Muirhead
Music, Scotland, History Writer, broadcaster, and musician Fergus Muirhead spends an afternoon in the company of two fellow pipers to discuss their books and enjoy a tune or two. Author Richard McLauchlan is our sure-footed guide to the fascinating history of the bagpipes, sharing stories from his new book The Bagpipes: A Cultural History. Although commonly associated with Scotland, the pipes are played across the globe, illuminating societies in remarkable and unexpected ways. Richard charts the rise of women pipers, investigates class, privilege, and capitalism in the piping world, and explores how a 'national instrument' can shift in meaning amidst the currents of identity. Joining Richard is the Piping Centre’s own John Mulhearn, who discusses his new book, Let Piping Flourish. A love letter to Glasgow’s rich piping heritage, this hardback volume showcases 230 tunes from more than 100 composers. With a wealth of photographs and historical anecdotes, it’s as much a visual treasure as a musical one. Part archive, part anthology, part tribute, it’s the first tune book of its kind.
The Story of the Christmas No. 1: Marc Burrows with Janey Lee Grace
Seasonal, Music, History Award-winning author, comedian and musician, Marc Burrows, brings an evening of comedy, music, and book chat to Aye Write in his festival debut. Using his new book, Mistletoe & Vinyl: The Story of the Christmas No. 1, as inspiration, Marc explores the peculiarly British cultural phenomenon of the Christmas singles chart. The festive top spot was something that, before 1973, wasn’t particularly important, but has since become a cornerstone of the December news cycle. For years, it was an annual cultural moment. But has it reached the end of its life? Marc traces the origins of the concept, from the Beatles to the Glam rock boom, Band Aid, novelty records, the X-Factor years, and the awful Sausage Roll charity singles of the 2020s. He also discusses the fascinating, weird, and unlikely stories behind some of the most beloved (and some of the most utterly loathed) songs in British musical history.
How to Kill a Witch and Witches: Zoe Venditozzi & Claire Mitchell and Steven Veerapen with Dani Garavelli
History, Witchcraft, Britain & Ireland Broadcaster and journalist Ruth Wishart sits down with writers Zoe Venditozzi, Claire Mitchell, and Steven Veerapen to discuss all things witches and witchcraft. In How to Kill a Witch: A Guide For The Patriarchy, Mitchell & Venditozzi take a deep dive into Scotland of the 1500s. If you were a woman at that time, there’s a good chance you or someone you knew would be tried as a witch. Over 4,000 were accused and many suffered grizzly executions. Inspired to correct this historic injustice, the writers seek to understand why the trials exploded to such a degree. Meanwhile, in Steven Veerapen’s Witches, he traces the history of witchcraft from the mass trials in the late sixteenth century to the decline of witch-hunting in the early eighteenth century. Based on documents and the latest historical research, he explores what caused the mass panics about alleged witches and what ultimately led to the relegation of the witch-and the witch-hunter-to the realm of fantasy. Blitz: Robert Elms with Stuart Cosgrove
Acclaimed author and broadcaster Robert Elms makes his Aye Write debut to discuss his new book, Blitz: The Club That Created the 80s. The short-lived Blitz club in London’s Covent Garden was more than just a place to hang out or be seen: it was the catalyst for a counter-culture explosion, rallying against all that Thatcher’s leadership had ushered in by the dawn of the 80s. Tuesday nights boasted a fearless cast - from Boy George and Spandau Ballet to Grayson Perry, Wham!, and Alexander McQueen. They were the vanguard of a very different England; socially liberal, loud and proud, celebrating diversity, but also fiercely individualistic. If Britain stood in black and white, the Blitz Kids switched on the colour. In Blitz, Elms reflects on a club night founded by working-class kids, one whose impact reverberated beyond its doors, through the worlds of art, literature, fashion and music, and into the present day.
My Life in Sport: Recorded Highlights: Dougie Donnelly with Hugh MacDonald
Memoir, Sport, Glasgow A giant of Scottish and British sports broadcasting, Dougie Donnelly sits down with journalist Hugh MacDonald to discuss Dougie’s brand new autobiography, My Life in Sport: Recorded Highlights. Dougie is one of Scotland’s most successful and best-loved broadcasters, whose career has taken him from a law degree he never used, to an award-winning 15 years as a radio DJ and encounters with Paul McCartney and Elton John, to a worldwide career in television sport. Hear from one of sports’ most familiar voices as he recalls presenting football World Cups and European Championships, Europe-winning Ryder and Solheim Cups, rugby Grand Slams, medal-laden Olympic and Commonwealth games, and many Major golf championships throughout the world. Or how, before all of that, he once booked a gig for a certain Mr Billy Connolly at Strathclyde University, which led to an enduring friendship (and a foreword from The Big Yin in Dougie’s book). One Aladdin Two Lamps cracks open the story of Shahrazad in One Thousand and One Nights to reveal new questions and answers. Who should we trust? Is love the most important thing in the world? Does it matter whether you’re honest? What makes us happy? In her guise as Aladdin, Jeanette asks us to reread what we think we know, giving us the courage to change our own narratives and alter endings we wish to subvert.

Teammates and coaches changed, but the resolve of Britain’s Ice Queen to fight for her golden ending at a fourth and final Winter Olympics refused to melt. Revolting: Terry Deary with Martin Stewart
History, Non-fiction Terry Deary might be the award-winning author of the acclaimed Horrible Histories series, but his new book, Revolting: A riotous history of rebellions and revolutions, is an altogether more grown-up affair. Chronicling the history of civil disobedience, Deary highlights some of the most consequential uprisings from around the world. Few enjoyed the success of Ivaylo, the Bulgarian swineherd who managed to fight off the Mongols, slay the Tsar and marry his widow in the space of a year. But then, some rebels have more modest aims: Spartacus mainly wanted to go home to see his mum. Either way, we have much to learn from the tactics of revolutionaries gone by. From the peasants to the slaves, the martyrs to the mutineers, Revolting celebrates the resilience and determination of those who dared to challenge the status quo. Steve Hackett

Steve Hackett

2 Oct 2026 - 26 Oct 2026

The legendary Genesis album Foxtrot which, in 1972, was pivotal in establishing the band as a major force in British rock. Guitarist Steve Hackett joined Genesis in 1971, making his band debut on the Nursery Cryme album which enjoyed a greater commercial success in Europe than the UK. After extensive touring, the band were encouraged, by audience reactions, to further experiment with ever longer compositions and develop their ability to incorporate strong narratives. This, in turn, allowed frontman Peter Gabriel more opportunity to indulge in the theatrics which helped to raise the band’s profile. Foxtrot was critically acclaimed and became the first Genesis album to make the UK album charts. The Steve Hackett Genesis Revisited - Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights tour also promises more Genesis favourites and highlights from Hackett’s extensive solo catalogue.

Spider-Man: No Way Home in Concert - Film with Live Orchestra
Spider-Man: No Way Home, one of the most successful Super Hero films of all time, will be presented live in concert for the first time on a UK tour in 2026, in what will be the ultimate experience for Spider-Man fans. The box office smash hit will have its incredible score performed by symphony orchestra live to picture on a huge HD screen on the tour, bringing all the wall-crawling action to life as never before. The music for Spider-Man: No Way Home was composed by Academy Award winner Michael Giacchino (Up, 2009), one of the most celebrated film composers working today. Giacchino has crafted the scores for all three of the recent live action Spider-Man films, creating a bold, emotionally rich musical identity for the beloved web-slinger. Michael Giacchino said: “It has been such an honour and a joy to have written the music for the recent Spider-Man trilogy. I have been drawn to Peter Parker since I was a kid - who can't relate to the awkward teenager who sails headlong into danger without thinking anything through? I have loved how his story has unfolded - Peter has gone from a high school student with all the angst we remember from our own youth (while also battling super villains!) into a confident young adult who truly understands the weight of his great responsibility. That musical arc, from plucky and clumsy to genuinely heroic, has been a rewarding creative experience. I'm absolutely thrilled that audiences will now be able to experience 'No Way Home' with orchestra, listening to talented musicians who make the black dots I write on paper come alive.” Released in 2021 by Sony Pictures, Spider-Man: No Way Home is the third Spider-Man Super Hero film from Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, starring Tom Holland, who plays the role of high-schooler Peter Parker and his alias, Spider-Man. It became a global box office phenomenon earning over $1.92 billion worldwide to become the highest-grossing Spider-Man film of all time, Sony Pictures’ top-grossing film and ranks as the seventh highest-grossing film in cinematic history. The film also earned critical acclaim, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects, cementing its place as both a box office triumph and a fan-favourite. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, for the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighbourhood hero's identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. 22 Apr 2026 - 4 May 2026

Yes, one of the most innovative of all prog-rock bands, and true legends of the genre, have announced a 8-date UK tour. The show will comprise two sets by the band with full production and a high definition video wall. The first will feature favourite classic tracks from YES’ extensive catalogue. The second will feature Relayer, the seventh studio album by Yes, and one of the band’s most distinctive. Relayer marked a slight change in direction as Patrick Moraz replaced Rick Wakeman on keyboards bringing an edgier, avant-garde feel to the album. This was perfect for the opening track Gates Of Delirium, almost 22 minutes in length, with its battle scene featuring the keyboard of Moraz and Steve Howe’s guitar. The battle gives way to the beautiful closing ballad Soon, a prayer for peace and hope. The album continues with Sound Chaser, a prog-rock-jazz fusion experiment heavily influenced by Moraz’s style and To Be Over, a calm and gentle conclusion to the album, based on a melody by Steve Howe.

Since the release of her first, career-defining solo album _Little Earthquakes_, and her number one album _Under The Pink_, Tori Amos has been one of the music industry’s most enduring and ingenious artists. From her visceral depiction of sexual assault in _Me and a Gun_ and her post-9/11 album _Scarlet’s Walk_,_ _to her decidedly feminist stage musical _The Light Princess_, her work has never shied away from intermingling the personal with the political. Her stunning album _Ocean To Ocean_ addressed the feelings of lock down, isolation, family and grief, with a gentle euphoric approach to such potentially dark musings. 'Flexing her musical muscle on an ecstatic return' _The Guardian_ 'Eclectic and electric music from a truly unique artist' _Manchester Evening News_

True & Bold: A Night for Dick Gaughan

18 Jan 2026 - 18 Jan 2026

Join us for a powerful and passionate night celebrating the work of Scotland's most fiercely committed troubadour, Dick Gaughan. Born in Glasgow in 1948 and raised in Leith, Gaughan’s music draws deeply from Scottish and Irish traditions, and whose revolutionary influence on folk music, politics, and the art of the song remains monumental. Gaughan’s music is a testament to his unwavering working-class and socialist roots, chronicling the dignity and struggles of the common person. His songs have inspired generations and have been covered by countless artists, including many of the performers on tonight's stage. His landmark album Handful of Earth (1981) is widely regarded as one of the greatest folk albums ever recorded, celebrated for its fusion of radical politics, masterful guitar work and musical beauty. A former member of The Boys of the Lough, Clan Alba and Five Hand Reel, Gaughan’s solo career has spanned over five decades, during which he has become a towering figure in the folk world. Tonight, that immense legacy is honoured by a stellar lineup of admirers and friends, from across the wide geographical and musical spectrum, who will perform Gaughan's most beloved songs, giving a fierce and compassionate voice to his life's work. This is more than a concert; it is an act of solidarity and appreciation for an artist whose fire and truth are needed now more than ever. I spent all those years doing what I thought was the right thing to do, and it just fell by the wayside. I thought nobody was going to hear it. So why did I do all that? Why did I put all that effort and time and study into doing this, for it just to disappear? But it didn’t just disappear. It is very gratifying that all those years of playing live and going into studios didn’t go to waste. For it to suddenly to become relevant again - thank you!’
