What's On @ God's House Tower

Launch Event: House of Revision / House of Repair by Uma Breakdown
Join us as we celebrate the launch of our latest exhibition, House of Revision / House of Repair by Uma Breakdown. House of Revision / House of Repair by Uma Breakdown is a project about love, restraint, liberty, pain, growth and collapse. Commissioned by ‘a space’ arts for God’s House Tower, the exhibition explores alternative routes through time, drawing on fact and fiction to reimagine the past and speculate about the future. Working across drawing, fiction, animation, code and sculpture, the artist revisits the building’s past as a Bridewell, an institution established in the 18th Century to house ‘idlers, vagrants and prostitutes’. The project asks what a place of spiritual and physical repair for people seen as ‘other’ might be, if freed from the authority of state and church that underpinned these ‘Houses of Correction’ and the subsequent systems they have evolved into since? Using the unique history and architecture of God’s House Tower, as well as the artist’s home of the North East, House of Revision / House of Repair imagines a sacred grove for fringe cultures and unconventional communities with alternative belief systems, such as ancient outlawed religions and pre-modern travelling performance groups, centering communal care at the edges of legality.

Such models include the hundreds of years and thousands of miles journey of The Cult of Cyble which would eventually lead to a shrine in Corbridge, Northumbria. Other models include outlawed performance from the Chester Mystery Plays to the parties closed by the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act of 1994.
The Sailing of the Mayflower Guided Walk
Southampton’s links with America had begun in the sixteenth century. Despite events being affected by Covid, walks, exhibitions, documentaries and films were all produced. This walk, which will also reflect on America 250, will explore why the pilgrims chose Southampton and includes a visit to the Mayflower exhibition at West Gate.
GHT Lates: Pegasuses, Teharli River and Augustin Coombe
Join us for an evening of local talent, art, heritage and street food after hours! Part of a series of late-night events at God’s House Tower, GHT Lates is an opportunity to explore the building by night while enjoying live performances from some of the South’s best musicians. Musicians / Artists Performing: This month we’re joined by Pegasuses and friends to celebrate the new album Sea Of Joy, now available on vinyl (which is available to buy with the GHT Lates ticket as a bundle). Their debut album, Sea of Joy, produced by Russell Marsden (Band of Skulls/Alberta Cross) at Snook Studio, showcases their signature blend of sweet harmonies and darkly comic storytelling. Pegasuses are an alternative, americana, country, folk, indie, songwriter group from Southampton. They are a husband and wife duo Dave Miatt and Laura Lamb, who write songs that tread the line between humour and heartbreak, inviting audiences to laugh, cry, or ideally, both. Augustin Coombe is a singer/songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist. Hayley Brigid is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in Brighton. As well as performing as a solo musician, Hayley is one third of the acoustic-folk trio Tenderlore, and the lead-singer of Progressive Music Award nominee A Formal Horse and new dark, heavy folk band Fellroot.
