The List

Grand Theatre

Swansea's Grand Theatre was opened in 1897 by the opera diva Adelina Patti, who had settled in the area, and for thirty years it was the city's chief entertainment venue. It faltered with the growing dominance of TV, but a multi-million pound restoration in the 1980s brought it back up to the highest technical standards and it now hosts touring shows, concerts, comedy and is the home of Fluellen Theatre Company, the Sir Harry Secombe Trust, Swansea Grand Theatre School of Drama and Musical Theatre and other organisations. The nearest train station is Swansea, and the theatre is served by various local bus services.

Swansea Jazzland 'Matteo Prefumo International Quartet'
Matteo Prefumo is one of the most acclaimed Italian guitarists and composers of his generation, capable of moving both international jazz legends and general audiences alike. Born in Genoa in 1991, he developed a personal, deep, and elegant musical voice from an early age - one that now resonates on some of the most prestigious stages across Europe and the United States. His music is intense, refined, and tells a unique story with every listen - a rare balance of technique, emotion, and artistic vision. Today, Matteo Prefumo is a leading voice in contemporary jazz - an artist who speaks directly to the heart with an authentic, borderless sound. Tony Tixier, piano & synths, is one of those rare artists who seem born for music. Born in France in 1986, he began playing piano at the age of six and was already performing on stage by the time he was seven. His early training was rigorous and profoundly rooted in classical tradition: twelve years of harmony, counterpoint, composition, and classical piano, culminating in top honors from the conservatory. But it was in jazz that Tony discovered his true expressive freedom. Tony Tixier is much more than a jazz pianist: he is a creator of sonic worlds - a musical architect who moves fluidly across eras and styles with rare sensitivity. Every one of his performances is a journey - unexpected, immersive, and capable of reaching even those new to jazz. Josh Ginsburg, bass, is one of the most creative and respected bassists on today's contemporary jazz scene. Born in Baltimore, he absorbed early on the rhythmic energy and expressive depth of his hometown, developing a style that blends tradition, modern swing, and a distinct narrative sensibility. Ginsburg studied with one of the great legends of African American jazz, Jackie McLean, who inspired him to seek in music not only melody and lyricism, but also an open, honest, and deeply listening spirit. This very attitude is what makes him such a sought-after collaborator: his ability to support, propel, and transform any project-not merely as an accompanist, but as the heartbeat of the collective sound. Josh Ginsburg is more than a bassist-he's a builder of musical worlds. With his precise touch, extraordinary rhythmic sensibility, and melodic intelligence, he stands today as one of the key figures in modern international jazz. Francesco Ciniglio is not just a drummer - he's one of those rare musicians who turn every performance into a story to be lived. Whether playing in a trio, a quartet, or a big band, he brings a clear musical vision: every note must carry meaning, every silence must resonate with purpose. Francesco Ciniglio doesn't just keep time. He shapes it. Molds it. Turns it into narrative. And it's precisely this unique, personal ability that makes him one of the most inspired and recognizable musicians of his generation.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Hamish attended Queens Park School in Glasgow and left to form as lead guitarist his first professional band, the Dream Police in 1964. Probably best known for his work as the original lead singer/guitarist with The Average White Band, Hamish Stuart has had an illustrious career as both songwriter and performer. He has worked with the likes of Diana Ross, George Benson and Chaka Khan (for whom he wrote the No. 1 chart hit 'Whatcha Gonna Do For Me') culminating in six years with the Paul McCartney Band. Although still guesting in other people's bands, since '94 he has also led his own group, which is a supergroup in every sense of the word. He continues to be highly active on the scene, working not only with his own band but making guest appearances with the likes of Ringo Starr and Bill Wyman. In July 2015, Stuart reunited with his AWB bandmates Malcolm "Molly" Duncan and Steve Ferrone to form The 360 Band. This is in essence one third of the original Average White Band. They released an album titled Three Sixty in 2017 and have been performing live together along with supporting musicians. Since 2019, he has toured as a featured member of Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band. In recognition of his unique contribution to music, Stuart was awarded with a BASCA Gold Badge award in 2016.

Ian Stone - Looking for the Wow

Ian Stone - Looking for the Wow

2 May 2026 - 23 Nov 2026

Life can’t just be the humdrum, the mundane and the routine before the inevitable slide to disease, decay and death. Why can’t we sneak in a bit of awesome, a tad of amazing and maybe a smidge of wonderful? A forest canopy opening onto a huge vista would be enchanting for some but my ancestors wandered in the desert for forty years, I think we’ve been outdoors enough. Others get their fix from the spiritual but I’ve been harbouring a grudge against God since my mother stopped me going to Arsenal after my Barmitzvah. Forty nine years ago. ’God will be watching’ she said. Well, at least he got to see the game. The point is, life could be so much better so I’m on the lookout. Come and join me on the hunt.

The Telling: Purcell, The Musical

The Telling: Purcell, The Musical

18 Apr 2026 - 25 May 2026

A play with music by award-winning writer Clare Norburn and BAFTA-nominated BBC director, Nicholas Renton (Mrs Gaskell’s Wives and Daughters, Musketeers, Lewis). 1695: in his final illness, composer Henry Purcell (Niall Ashdown) is suffering from feverish dream-like hallucinations in which the past, present and fantasy collide, and his songs take on a life of their own. His bedroom is transformed into a theatre and Purcell revisits his past including his childhood memories of the Great Fire of London and his early romance with his wife. Interwoven into the drama are Purcell compositions: from bawdy theatre ballads and joyful celebrations of love, to slow airs, a ‘mad song’, and numbers from his semi-operas. Niall Ashdown (Whose Line Is It Anyway?, The Comedy Store Players) stars as Purcell alongside actor-singers Sarah Lambie and Héloïse Bernard, Jo Lawrence on violin, Miriam Nohl/Rachel Gray on cello and Oliver John Ruthven/Aidan Phillips/Jan Waterfield on harpsichord.
