The List

Grand Theatre

The Grand Theatre really is that; an outstanding example of Frank Matcham's work, it opened in 1894 and there's barely an icon of 20th century British theatre that hasn't trod on its hallowed boards, from Margaret Lockwood and John Gielgud to Arthur Askey and Sid James. Like so many great Victorian buildings it narrowly escaped being demolished by the local council in the 1970s, and is now Grade II listed. The Grand hosts shows by local companies, major touring productions, touring musicians, stand-up comedy, psychics, musicals, and in its capacity as Britain's National Theatre of Variety, if people still did acts where unicycling Labradors whistle the Great American Songbook, it would probably host that too. Situated just off Blackpool's seafront, its nearest train station is Blackpool North and the 2, 2C and 61 buses go past the entrance.
