Peter Bruntnell

Peter Bruntnell

8 Jun 2025 - 10 Jun 2025

The singer-songwriter performs his original material. Rolling Stone once declared Peter Bruntnell to be, “one of England's best kept musical secrets”. England has successfully managed to keep Peter Bruntnell a secret for all this time, even from itself. “Maybe this will be the album to finally give him the worldwide superstar recognition he deserves!”, enthused every other Peter Bruntnell album review from the last 20+ years, with an admirably unwavering optimism. “If we lived in a just world, Peter Bruntnell would by now be in the middle of his third or fourth global arena tour, his biggest worry working out how to courier his latest armful of Grammy awards back to the UK so his butler could have them installed in the west wing of mansion by the time he got home,” said a feature in The Guardian in 2016, intent on letting the cat out of the bag, but failing miserably. Needless to say, we don’t live in a just world and Peter Bruntnell is still having to get by without a butler. Needless to say, we don’t live in a just world and Peter Bruntnell is still having to get by without a butler. Not even 2021’s primarily solo, slightly synthy lockdown album Journey To The Sun succeeded in putting an end to Peter's non-success, despite Mojo echoing the plea that, “Somehow, some way, this cult and infinitely class songwriter must get his due wider recognition”. The Scottish Daily Express with its 5 star review, slightly frustrated, said, or perhaps yelled, “I’m getting tired of saying this: He’s brilliant”. The Irish Times thoughtfully combined two quotes into one, saving us the trouble of going back and getting crushed under the sheer weight of Peter’s archive of press quotes: “With Journey To The Sun, the man whose songs NME once noted should be placed on school curriculums has done it again.” And he continues to do so. Peter’s forthcoming new album, Houdini And The Sucker Punch will do little to dispel this fantasy of world domination, but it remains unlikely to become in any way a reality. He will remain the secret singer-songwriter, lauded by the likes of Rumer, Son Volt/Uncle Tupelo's Jay Farrar, Kathleen Edwards, Richmond Fontaine/The Delines' Willy Vlautin, Kurt Wagner of Lampchop and various members of R.E.M.

Darren Hayman

Darren Hayman

27 Jul 2025 - 27 Jul 2025

Darren Hayman presents a 15 year anniversary show looking back at Essex Arms, his second in a trilogy of albums about his home county of Essex. While the opening album of the trilogy (Pram Town, 2006) dealt with the displacement and ennui of living in a new town (Harlow), and The Violence (2012) rolled back the years to visit the 17th century Essex Witch Trials, 2010s Essex Arms is a conceptual piece about the East Anglian rural underbelly. Best known as the singer-songwriter of the phenomenally successful and much-loved Hefner, Darren Hayman is now 15 years, and over 14 albums, into an increasingly idiosyncratic career path, where he has taken a singular and erratic route through England's tired and heartbroken underbelly. Darren is also writing the best tunes of his career; increasingly complex and mature songs, he is a thoughtful, concise and detailed songwriter. Hayman's first two solo albums, Table For One (2006) and The Secondary Modern (2007), charmed the critics with The Guardian opining that Hayman's profoundly English songwriting was the match of Ray Davies. Mostly joined by his band The Secondary Modern a loose, urban folk collective, underpinning Hayman's concrete sorrow with rural violins and tired pianos he has released a series of albums, largely focused on place. This allowed for the exploration of nuanced subjects in detail, with a trio of albums based in Essex (2009's Pram Town and 2010's Essex Arms) and culminating in 2012's The Violence, a 20 song account of the 17th century Essex witch trials. From this he developed an album of English Civil War folk songs of the time (2013's Bugbears) and stayed with the historical theme for Chants For Socialists, which saw him set William Morris words to music, creating an album of kindness and hope that brought Hayman's most critical acclaim yet. In 2016 Darren was awarded Hardest Working Musician by the Association of Independent Music for his epic project on Thankful Villages, the 55 villages that survived the Great War with no casualties. 12 Astronauts tells the personal story of the only men to have walked on the Moon. bold and unique" The Sunday Times Hayman has hit a creative purple patch a treat Mojo uniquely intimate and very satisfying - BBC

Although Craig has forged a career and won repute in the rock arena, folk music has always been his true muse and calling. “As a 15-year-old, I played my first gig, guitar in hands, at the Cellar Folk Club in Hemel Hempstead,” he recalls. “Life and opportunities then led me elsewhere, but here I am again, having travelled full circle. It feels like home and it’s so wonderful to be here.” “Craig is a singer / songwriter and his personal based songs are very accessible, with all the foibles of life that we can relate to.” Tony Birch - FATEA

Johnny Campbell with support from Hafren
Johnny Campbell emerged onto the UK folk scene writing self-penned material and delving deep into Northern English folk song and story. “A Modern-Day Billy Bragg” - Tradfolk Johnny Campbell is passionate about the songs and stories of northern England. Taking inspiration from traditional material, as well as penning new songs of his own, he explores what it means to be human today, as well as looking back at our history. Campbell’s first album, From Hull & Halifax & Hell, took him even further north than you might expect, as he headed to the Faroe Islands to record it live on the island of Nolsoy. This was followed by three singles - Hard Times of Old England, Winter Hill Trespass and A Right to Roam, the latter of which was chosen by Tradfolk as one of the best folk songs of 2022. 2024 saw Campbell release True North, an album of traditional northern folk songs recorded on their respective county summits. From Northumberland and Durham, to Lancashire and Merseyside, Campbell has travelled the length and breadth of the north of England to collect these recordings on or close to the summit of each spot. Each recording documents a moment in time, captured for posterity on a fell or desolate moor, with the album as a whole capturing a tapestry of the north. These recordings are not refined to perfection or studio-polished, but living and breathing songs, just as they’ve been passed down through the generations. Through these songs, Campbell explores the symbiotic connections between the land, the music, the stories and the history that has shaped northern identity - from chartism and co-operatives, to the Labour movement. The landscapes of the north are inextricably linked with our social history. The hills and streams that powered the Industrial Revolution in turn played a key role in social hierarchy and even the transatlantic slave trade. The album is also the final part of a trilogy of releases that explore our connection (and disconnection) to the land around us. Alongside his music-making, Campbell’s knowledge of radical histories, landscape and geography have earned him a freelance writing role with Britain’s most popular walking magazine, Country Walking, as well as praise from author Nick Hayes, a feature on BBC Radio 4 ‘Open Country’ and an episode of the award-winning Folk on Foot podcast. Hafren is the interdisciplinary artistic world of Welsh guitarist-composer Chris Roberts. Drawing from the musical heritage of Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, Hafren reinterprets local tunes and songs with his guitar and voice. Blending folk, classical, and contemporary influences, he connects local traditions with a wider intercultural landscape.

Multi-talented Jon Wilks is a much-admired fingerpicking folk guitarist and singer in the Martin Carthy/Martin Simpson vein. His talent has been recognised by Guitarist, one of the world’s biggest guitar magazines, which featured him as one-to-watch in July 2022. His upcoming 5th solo album (due in Autumn 2025) promises an absorbing blend of historical richness, trad influences and Jon’s own sublime song writing. Jon is a prominent performer of traditional English folk songs and broadside ballads. Always with a keen eye and ear for a story, Jon’s live shows include absorbing tidbits about the songs, original singers and collectors, that he has unearthed during his extensive research on traditional folk music. As Gavin McNamara describes - ‘Jon brings the whole scene to life. A flickering cine film of black and white lives, painstakingly hand coloured to bring out every striking detail.’ Jon’s exceptional talent is also self-evident in his sublime song writing. His expertise in writing and in undercovering stories was honed during Jon’s years as a journalist during which he interviewed renowned musicians and delved into their stories (Jon was editor of Time Out magazine in Tokyo and Abu Dhabi and contributor to The Guardian, Dazed & Confused etc). Recognised with a double page feature in global Guitarist magazine, Jon is a guitarist of exceptional calibre. His stand-out talent has been applauded by Carl Barat of The Libertines who hailed Jon as a ‘badman fingerpicking guitarist’ and Martin Simpson who describes Jon as ‘the real deal’. For his forthcoming album, due for release and touring in Autumn 2025, Jon aims for his music to bring people together with an energy that will make it hard to sit still! Emanating an upbeat, warm, communal feel, the new album sees Jon reconnecting with a talented group of old friends and collaborators, including folk luminary Jackie Oates. Inspired by enthusiastic audience and press response to his own songwriting and compositions, his forthcoming album sees Jon making a shift from his previous, more traditional repertoire to a collection of nearly all original songs. It’s a recording that is set to unite Jon’s heartfelt songwriting with his wide-ranging influences and experience in traditional music and far beyond. Wilks proves once again what a stand-out talent he really is. There is an honesty and compassion in Wilks’ writing and performance, which is entirely charming. Klofmag

Jennifer Lee Ridley

Jennifer Lee Ridley

30 Jun 2025 - 30 Jun 2025

Emotive songstress, Jennifer Lee Ridley passionately uses influences of a Romantic folk nature to create poignant and touching music. She has studied in depth the poetic nature of song and has a strong affinity with writers such as William Shakespeare, John Keats and William Blake. More recently she has combined these influences with her own song-writing to create more modern fusions whilst carefully retaining the purity of the lyrical content. Her dark warm vocals combined with her individual folk sound mirrors the poetic lyrics which explore the many facets of emotions. This has had a profound effect on her own songs which she continues to develop and enhance through working with other composers, musicians and writers locally and in London. She feels strongly that collaborating is an important part of growing and building an understanding of the nature and the impact of poetry and prose on music.

In the words of Ian and Joanna the husband and wife team that make up ‘La Nouvelle Musique’ We try to mix our influences in an original way and sometimes find ourselves wondering about how certain collaborations would have sounded. Like if Frank Sinatra had recorded a song with The Doors or if Mark E Smith had worked with Elvis . Dave Malkin & Louis Campbell and Moya Sweeney & Archie Churchill-Moss
Lauded for projects expertly blending tradition and modernity, Dave Malkin (Dipper Malkin) and Louis Campbell (Owen Spafford & Louis Campbell) come together to explore and reframe their instrument, the guitar, and its role in English traditional music. Their debut EP, Bird On A Briar, journeys through melodies from centuries-old manuscripts and the aural tradition, reclaiming arrangements from the English Pastoral School and celebrating the musical idiosyncrasies of England, highlighting the exquisite result of a thousand years of migration and cultural collision, all through a thoroughly contemporary lens. The result is refreshingly considered yet pure, documenting the pair’s attention to detail in arrangement, harmony, tone and phrasing with no overdubs, trickery or gimmicks. Their two flat-top acoustic guitars bloom in the natural reverberance of a church hall in South East London, captured by Malkin’s long-time collaborator Tom Moore. The outcome of a late night conversation between Moya Sweeney and Archie Churchill-Moss lead to decision to create a new body of music exploring the similarities and differences between the Irish and mainland European accordion traditions. Both revered artists in their own rights, with extensive performance experience across the UK and Europe, these musicians met in Derry in 2023 and quickly realised their combined approach to composition complimented each other. The result is a collection of contemporary instrumental music written to be performed on two accordions.
