Greyfriars Kirkyard

Greyfriars Kirkyard was established by Mary, Queen of Scots in the 16th century. It is a beautiful and peaceful historic cemetery located in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town. Both Greyfriars Kirk, situated within the Kirkyard, and the cemetery are named after the Franciscan monks whose monastery was originally situated on the site. Today it is highly popular among tourists as J.K. Rowling was inspired by the cemetery and she even got Voldemort’s name from one of the tombs here. You can see for yourself where Tom Riddle comes from. However, Harry Potter is not the sole reason people visit this location: Edinburgh’s iconic faithful dog, Greyfriars Bobby was buried here, too.
