Join us in the garden for an afternoon of all things compost. Well show you how to turn kitchen and garden scraps into nutrient-rich compost no big space or fancy kit needed. Just a few simple techniques that are good for your garden and the planet. Well take a look at different composting methods and show you around our own composting system. Youll learn how composting helps feed your plants, protect soil, and support biodiversity. Well also explore compost teas great for your garden and great for reducing waste. Perfect for curious beginners and anyone wanting to green up their gardening game. Meet your teacher: Camila Barboza is one of Hackney School of Food's new garden educators, a food and herb grower, holistic gardener and forager. She is endlessly fascinated by the wonders of nature, and the beautiful processes that we get to enjoy as gardeners, such as seeds turning into plants and old plants turning into soil. She also delivers workshops with Hackney Herbal and you can see more of her amazing work on Instagram - @camila.beetroot Take aways: Youll take away your plant weve potted in the practical part of the class and receive detailed instructions on how to care for them at home. Tickets: 48 full price includes all materials, hot drinks and cake for breaks. (8-10 tickets) 35 concession price - for those who are on lower incomes, not working or students. (4 tickets) Optional donation of 20 if youre able to contribute a bit more. Concession tickets We offer 4 concession tickets for those on lower incomes (e.g. receiving Universal Credit, unemployed, or students). Please book these tickets only if this applies to you. Spaces are limited, so book early to secure your spot! What to bring: Shoes and (depending on weather) raincoat for walking around the garden. Location: This will take place in our garden room and growing garden in Clapton Hackney. Address: Oswald Street, E5 OBT. Refunds/transfers: We rely on the income from our classes to fund our not-for-profit social enterprise. Please give at least 14 days' notice for cancellations or transfers. If you're unable to attend at the last minute, youre welcome to pass your ticket to a friend or family member - just email us at [email protected] to let us know. Summer Holiday Kitchen Garden Chef Club! Join us for our Summer Holiday Kitchen Garden Chef Club at Hackney School of Food this August! Running across two fun-filled weeks in August (11-22nd August with no class on 14th August). Well be making the most of the season with sun-filled cooking and outdoor gardening adventures. Each day begins in the kitchen, where children will prepare a fresh, homemade lunch using ingredients grown right here in our garden. In the afternoons, well head outdoors to learn practical gardening skills, cool off in the shade, and enjoy nature-based activities. Perfect for budding chefs and green-fingered explorers, this club is a joyful, hands-on way to enjoy the summer break! What to expect: Full-day sessions from 10 AM 3 PM packed with cooking and gardening fun A homemade lunch made together each morning Garden-based activities and outdoor exploration in the afternoon When and where: Dates: 11-22nd August with no class on 14th August. Roll up, roll up! Join us to perfect the art of sushi making in our three-hour adult workshop. Youll master the art of cooking sushi rice, then roll your own beautifully crafted sushi using fresh, seasonal ingredients harvested straight from our kitchen garden. Youll explore different styles of sushi, from classic maki to temaki (Japanese hand rolls), and make your own punchy pickles to complete the experience. What youll learn How to make three types of sushi rolls using seasonal garden produce How to roll and serve temaki (Japanese hand rolls) How to prepare quick Japanese pickles Key flavour and texture principles in Japanese cooking Tips for recreating sushi confidently at home Dietaries : can be adapted for vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free diets About your teacher Yvonne is a Chef Educator at Hackney School of Food and an experienced development chef. Her cooking draws inspiration from across East, South East, and South Asia, blending bold flavours with seasonal, homegrown ingredients.
