The Hare and Hounds is a music venue in a listed building dating from 1820 in Kings Heath. It has notable Art Nouveau tiles in the entrance and hall. Famously, it hosted the first ever concert of local band, UB4O in 1979. Downstairs are bars, upstairs the 2 music performance spaces.

I feel fortunate for that time spent idly, down in the basement, learning the entire Rancid 'Let's Go' album on guitar with my friends. I find it easy to romanticise that time in my life, even though I was, without question, a disgruntled kid who badly wanted to escape my surroundings and see the world. "I was listening to a lot of the Irish bands The Undertones and Protex while writing this one, and I think there is a fair bit of their influence. Just the simplicity and big bar chords mostly. C.W. Stoneking is an Australian blues singer-songwriter and guitar and banjo player. To date Stoneking has released three full length albums of his original material, they are King Hokum, Jungle Blues and Gon' Boogaloo. (released on Stoneking's own King Hokum Records label). C.W. Stoneking was born in Katherine, Northern Territory, in 1974, the son of Billy Marshall Stoneking. In 2005 Stoneking recorded an album of original blues compositions titled King Hokum. The album was received with great critical acclaim in the Australian media after its release in 2006. In 2006, Stoneking formed his backing band, the Primitive Horn Orchestra who he still performs with. The current lineup is James Clark (tuba, double bass), Stephen Grant (cornet), Stu Barker (trombone), and Johnny Machin (drums). In 2006, radio presenter Tim Ritchie picked Stoneking's King Hokum as his album of the year on Radio National's Breakfast program. Radio National also presented his February 2007 Australia-wide tour. King Hokum was nominated for the Best Blues/Roots Album in the 2007 ARIA Awards and won the Best Independent Blues Release award in the 2007 AIR Awards (Australian Independent Record Industry Awards). In 2008 Stoneking released Jungle Blues, his second album of original compositions. Jungle Blues was nominated for Best Blues/Roots Album, Best Independent Release, Best Male Artist and Best Album Cover Art at the 2009 ARIA Awards. At the fourth annual AIR Awards held on 22 November 2009, Stoneking was nominated for Best Independent Album, Best Independent Blues/ Roots Album, and Independent Artist of the Year, with Jungle Blues winning the award for Best Independent Blues/ Roots Album. Jungle Blues was also shortlisted in the 2008 Australian Music Prize. He appeared on 'Later... with Jools Holland' on 5 October 2010, playing " Jungle Blues" and "Jungle Lullaby".

With hits like ‘Digging Your Scene’ and ‘It Doesn’t Have To Be This Way’, The Blow Monkeys epitomised the glamour of mid-80s pop at its most graceful and sophisticated. In the band’s frontman Robert Howard (aka Dr. Robert), they possessed a tall, charismatic singer who was both camera-friendly and clever, who appeared to be just as much at ease on the catwalk that is pop’s conveyor belt as he was penning witty, incisive songs. While quite clearly Robert’s band, though, the Blow Monkeys were also gifted three immensely talented musicians in bassist Mick Anker (he of the trademark bowler hat), saxophonist Neville Henry and drummer Tony Kiley. Behind the band’s stylish veneer lay something else, which became increasingly apparent from Robert’s lyrics. While some of the Smash Hits generation avoided politics with a capital P, The Blow Monkeys openly criticised the policies of the Conservative government, railing against social injustices and adopting an openly left-of-centre stance on issues of the day. From openly endorsing the gay community “Digging Your Scene” to an outright attack on Margaret Thatcher ‘Celebrate (The Day After You)’ – a duet with the late, great Curtis Mayfield, The Blow Monkeys were always the thinking person’s pop group. As the 1980s progressed, so too did the band’s musical style, from a sound once dubbed “jazz punk” by Robert to a more soulful, jazzy style and an ever-increasing adoption of dance music. The Blow Monkeys of their rare, indie debut single ‘Live Today Love Tomorrow’ (recorded on a shoestring in 1981) would be barely recognisable to those who bought the Balearic remix of ‘La Passionara’ from 1990. And yet a soulful, spiritually uplifting strain has continued to run through their music – and, indeed, that of Robert’s solo recordings – to this day.

Republica are back and have been very active recently. Joe Goddard, member of Hot Chip and The 2 Bears, songwriter, producer, DJ, remixer and co-founder of the Greco-Roman label. Like Four Tet, Caribou and Jamie xx, Joe combines a thirst for experimentation, an instinctive understanding of the dancefloor and a love of leftof-centre pop music. During the 1990s, Joe attended Elliott School in Putney, where he met his Hot Chip bandmate Alexis Taylor and his long-time friend Kieran Hebden. As a teenager, he progressed from indie and hip hop to drum'n'bass to house and garage, always thrilled by those moments when underground music infiltrated the charts. As well as working on seven Hot Chip albums and two with Raf Rundell as The 2 Bears, Joe has remixed the likes of Kraftwerk, New Order, Disclosure, Dirty Projectors, the Chemical Brothers, Wiley and Jessie Ware, produced tracks for Franz Ferdinand, Bernard Sumner, Little Boots, Dels and Mashrou Leila and released a string of solo singles. Gabriel, his haunting 2011 hit with singer Valentina, was his first big success beyond Hot Chip. "It made me feel that I was capable of doing things outside the band," he says. This led to "Taking Over" and his fist solo album proper on Domino "Electric Lines". A keen collaborator, he has released tracks with Michael Mayer, Tuff City Kids, Eats Everything, Mathew Dear, Mixhell and Hayden Thorpe from Wild Beasts in recent years and has some nice projects currently in the lab alongside his follow up solo album. After 4 roadblock parties (incl. 3 sell-outs) at Yes and the DBA in Manchester, KGB has launched in London and Bristol, as well as making its festival debut at London's Wide Awake in May. Inspired by a 2012 white label with the same name, Kylie Wears Berghaus is a headline set of bespoke Kylie dubs, all made in house. The edits are exclusive to KWB - you won't hear them anywhere else. It's an unprecedented 2 hours of first-time aired bootlegs, steeped in white label culture. Finger on the pulse house and techno classily roll under sultry Kylie classics like Can't Get You Out of My Head and Slow. Tasteful tech-house and trance-y drops blow the roof off In Your Eyes, I Believe In You and Love At First Sight. This is Kylie like you've never heard her before. Following the massive success of our Bank Holiday party with Lloyd Barwood and Gowzer, WeAreConnected returns to the fabulous Hare&Hounds on the 19th September with the Birmingham debuts of DJ Ruby and Jon Towell. Hailing from Malta, DJ Ruby is a true legend of the progressive scene, known for hypnotic, seamless sets and a deeply musical approach to the dancefloor. With a string of top notch releases on labels such as Mango Alley, Global Underground and Warung, DJ Ruby has a packed international summer schedule, including at the Balance Festival in Croatia. Jon Towell is a UK-based producer, DJ and co-promoter of the Another Life events in Sheffield. Jon's star is on the rise in the progressive scene, with some huge tracks already under his belt, and boasting support from some of the biggest names in the business such as John Digweed, Nick Warren and Anthony Pappa. Jake Vaadeland is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist and songwriter from Saskatchewan, Canada. His traditional sound and unique style blends bluegrass and 50s rockabilly, with Jake also specializing on guitar and banjo in addition to his impressive vocals. Jake strives to write and play with a focus on storytelling, and messages that he hopes his audience can relate to, all packaged in foot stomping, high energy performances with The Sturgeon River Boys. In 2023, he performed at JunoFest, CCMA Week, travelled to Nashville to showcase at AmericanaFest, and opened for artists like Dean Brody and Charley Crockett. He recently earned a Western Canadian Music Award nomination for ‘Roots Artist of the Year’ and won a Saskatchewan Country Music Award for ‘Alternative Country Album of the Year’.
