The Hare and Hounds is a music venue in a listed building dating from 1820 in Kings Heath. It has notable Art Nouveau tiles in the entrance and hall. Famously, it hosted the first ever concert of local band, UB4O in 1979. Downstairs are bars, upstairs the 2 music performance spaces.

With hits like ‘Digging Your Scene’ and ‘It Doesn’t Have To Be This Way’, The Blow Monkeys epitomised the glamour of mid-80s pop at its most graceful and sophisticated. In the band’s frontman Robert Howard (aka Dr. Robert), they possessed a tall, charismatic singer who was both camera-friendly and clever, who appeared to be just as much at ease on the catwalk that is pop’s conveyor belt as he was penning witty, incisive songs. While quite clearly Robert’s band, though, the Blow Monkeys were also gifted three immensely talented musicians in bassist Mick Anker (he of the trademark bowler hat), saxophonist Neville Henry and drummer Tony Kiley. Behind the band’s stylish veneer lay something else, which became increasingly apparent from Robert’s lyrics. While some of the Smash Hits generation avoided politics with a capital P, The Blow Monkeys openly criticised the policies of the Conservative government, railing against social injustices and adopting an openly left-of-centre stance on issues of the day. From openly endorsing the gay community “Digging Your Scene” to an outright attack on Margaret Thatcher ‘Celebrate (The Day After You)’ – a duet with the late, great Curtis Mayfield, The Blow Monkeys were always the thinking person’s pop group. As the 1980s progressed, so too did the band’s musical style, from a sound once dubbed “jazz punk” by Robert to a more soulful, jazzy style and an ever-increasing adoption of dance music. The Blow Monkeys of their rare, indie debut single ‘Live Today Love Tomorrow’ (recorded on a shoestring in 1981) would be barely recognisable to those who bought the Balearic remix of ‘La Passionara’ from 1990. And yet a soulful, spiritually uplifting strain has continued to run through their music – and, indeed, that of Robert’s solo recordings – to this day.

Superchunk + Oblivians (14+ under 16's with and adult) Superchunk After the shocking, and for many, demoralizing result of the 2016 election, “I didn’t buy the silver lining some were promoting that ‘well, at least art and music will be great now!’,” says Superchunk co-founder and frontman Mac McCaughan. “Obviously, any sane person would gladly trade four to eight years of terrible music for not having our country dismantled to satisfy the whims of a vengeful child and his enablers.” That said, good music and art still have a lot to say, and the urgency of current events gave Mac, Laura, Jim, and Jon the momentum to make something new sooner than later. “It would be strange to be in a band, at least our band, and make a record that completely ignored the surrounding circumstances that we live in and that our kids are going to grow up in.” Enter What a Time to Be Alive, Superchunk’s first album in over four years. It’s a record, says Mac, “about a pretty dire and depressing situation but hopefully not a record that is dire and depressing to listen to.” Indeed, like so much of Superchunk’s music in the band’s nearly three decades together, the songs on What a Time to Be Alive meet rage and anxiety head-on with the catharsis and exhilaration of loud punk fire and vulnerable pop energy. Like 2013’s I Hate Music, which focused on death, loss, and the role of music in an aging life, the new record brings spirit to the frontlines of pain—it’s as defiant as it is despairing, as much a call to arms as a throwing up of hands.

Republica are back and have been very active recently. They released their highly acclaimed new EP ‘Christiana Obey’ and promoted it with a sold out UK tour and selected European festival appearances including the prestigious Isle Of Wight Festival, Norway’s Midnattsrocken Festival, The Welsh GB Rally and Hanover's Ferryman Festival in Germany. Cosey Mueller is a musician and artist currently living and working in Berlin. After finishing her studies in fine art at Udk Berlin in 2018 she started her musical career as one half of the synthpunk duo DAS DAS whith which they released two albums DAS DAS (S/T) in 2020 and Leben in Bildschirmen in 2021 (label: Detriti). She also played synthesizer in the hardcore/experimental group Glaas whith which she co- released their debut album Qualm in 2022 and their EP Cruel heart cold Summer in 2023 (label: Static Shock). Interior Escapes was her solo debut, a self released synthwave project recorded on tape during 2020/2021. It was followed by her second LP, Irrational Habits, released February 2023 (label: Static Age). Her music is characterized by repetitive synth melodies, explosive beats, expressive vocals and a playful use of language. It makes you travel to another time. A pulsating, shimmering and danceable live experience is guaranteed.

Formed, almost accidentally, in a shared east LA lockout, the members of Clarion came together to write music together in late 2023. Anthony, Saya and Joseph had all had spent time in the local DIY scene of East Los Angeles and in 2024 decided to record the songs they had been writing in a quick three-day sprint. They implemented efforts like layering multiple amps in stereo, panned left to right with different tones, to create an illusion of two guitarists. They tried every idea that came to mind, allowing the songs to become fully realized instead of rushed. The result is an immersive and youthful mix of shoegaze, post-punk, and Japanese rock. These recordings became their debut EP, simply titled Clarion. The song Hello Juliet from that EP quickly gained traction on TikTok when a fan-made video started to go viral. Of the song, singer and bassist Saya Oliva says The song is about wanting to make it right with someone. Guitarist Anthony Sanchez adds, I ended up writing the riff and song after one of my best friends passed, and we weren't on the best of terms when it happened so the lyrics really reflect that feeling of regret, of wanting to start over. From there, they were catapulted from their local DIY scene to a much bigger stage. Signing with Broke Records in 2025, Hello Juliet continued to grow and find more listeners as it currently has more than 55 million streams across platforms. Opportunities to tour with artists like Violent Vira, Rehash, Mexican Slum Rats, and Minds Eye followed in 2025 as the band honed their live set and added touring member Javier Flores on drums. Orchestra Mambo International is a 12 piece UK ensemble founded and co-led by DJ Lubi and salsa/Latin jazz trombonist Jonny Enright (Grupo X). They play classic salsa, mambo, Afro-Cuban jazz, Cuban son and cha cha cha inspired by Latin music legends like Tito Puente, Machito, Eddie Palmieri, Ray Barretto, Tito Rodriguez and the Fania All Stars. They gave a concert at Colours Hoxton in London on 24 February 2026 proving a huge success. The show's scenography is centered on synchronized video projections on Ledwall with an abstract visual slant. They are specially designed in order to make the show a visual and perceptive journey rich in emotional charge. The ATHOMKRAFT duet instruments, unlike most of the music around the world, are set on 432hz tuning. The reason for this choice is attributed to the band's intention to engage the audience in a more immersive way to the perception of the show by entering into vibrational resonance with it. Orchestra Mambo International is a powerhouse 13-piece Latin big band formed in late 2022 by salsa DJ Lubi Jovanovic (DJ Lubi) and trombonist/composer Jonny Enright (Grupo X). Bringing together top musicians from across Venezuela, Colombia, Cuba, Spain, Brazil, and the UK, the group celebrates the golden era of mambo, salsa dura, and Afro-Cuban jazz, while delivering it with a fresh, contemporary energy. Drawing inspiration from Latin music legends Tito Puente, Machito, Eddie Palmieri, Celia Cruz, Ray Barretto, and Tito Rodriguez, OMI have quickly become a force on the UK Latin and jazz scenes. Their thrilling live shows have lit up festivals such as Glastonbury, Leeds Jazz Festival, and Musicport, and sold out venues including The Forge (London), Brudenell Social Club (Leeds), and Band on the Wall (Manchester). They also featured in a celebrated BBC 6 Music session for Cerys Matthews at the legendary Maida Vale Studios. Individual members have performed with a diverse range of international stars, including Joe Bataan, Jimmy Sabater, Tito Allen, Adalberto Santiago, Elbow, Gregory Isaacs, Corinne Bailey-Rae, The New Mastersounds, Julian Lennon, and Fairground Attraction, reflecting the bands outstanding musical pedigree and stylistic breadth. Following four acclaimed single releases of original mambo, Latin jazz, and cha cha championed by Gilles Peterson, Huey Morgan, Craig Charles, Jamz Supernova, Don Letts, and Cerys Matthews, alongside airplay from Jazz FM, One Jazz, and Worldwide FM the band now step forward with their debut album Apúntalo, out September 2026 on Loft Recordings. Featuring all original compositions, the album showcases the groups dynamic sound with lead vocalist Carlos Peña from Venezuela, formerly a featured singer with Oscar DLeóns orchestra, and guest appearances from Cuban singer Claritzel Miyares, an acclaimed performer who also tours internationally with Puerto Rican superstar Olga Tañón. Orchestra Mambo International bring together exciting up-and-coming musicians such as Olivia Cuttill (trumpet) and Gustavo Andrade (baritone sax) with experienced Latin players including Jimmy Le Messurier (timbales) and Andrzej Baranek (piano), creating a vibrant blend of youthful energy and seasoned authenticity. The band continue their mission to bring the fire and sophistication of classic mambo to a new generation of UK listeners not only from the salsa dance floor, but from the wider worlds of jazz, funk, and global music.
