The Dresser

The Dresser

24 Jun 2026 - 27 Jun 2026

The Harrogate Dramatic Society presents The Dresser, by Ronald Harwood Set in a small English regional theatre during the Blitz, The Dresser explores the relationship between two men who are reluctantly and inevitably co-dependent. Sir, the last of a dying breed of Shakespearean actors, is struggling to take to the stage to deliver his renowned portrayal of King Lear. Or is it Othello? His failing health, wavering confidence and erratic behaviour threaten tonight’s performance and the company’s future. It falls to Norman, his faithful dresser, to keep both the show and its star from falling apart. Both wickedly funny and deeply moving, this is a beautifully observed portrait of a shabby backstage ego at odds with the glamour and greatness of his presence on stage; and the man who sacrifices his own life to keep him going. This amateur production of The Dresser, by Ronald Harwood is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd. www.concordtheatricals.co.uk
INK, by James Graham

INK, by James Graham

29 Apr 2026 - 2 May 2026

Harrogate Dramatic Society presents INK, by James Graham It’s 1969 London and Rupert Murdoch wants to take on the British establishment. He buys the failing Sun newspaper and with his disaffected but brilliant and ruthless editor Larry Lamb, plans to make a new kind of paper, one that gives people what they want - one that will knock the Daily Mirror off its perch. Seriously under-resourced, with just a small disparate band of hacks and against all the odds The Sun rapidly becomes Britain’s best selling newspaper. But giving the people what they want comes at a cost. As Murdoch tells his editor “I want something loud” and that’s just what we get. Fast paced and funny, INK is the foundation story of the modern Sun newspaper, written by our foremost ‘state of the nation’ playwright and screen writer James Graham (This House, Dear England, Sherwood, Quiz, Brexit: The Uncivil War). Originally produced on Broadway by the Manhattan Theatre Club, Lynne Meadow, Artistic Director, Barry Gove, Executive Director, Denise Wood, Executive Director and Sonia Friedman Productions with funds provided by The Roy Cockrum Foundation on April 24, 2019. INK was originally commissioned by the Almeida Theatre and first presented at the Almeida Theatre, London on 27 June 2017. It then transferred to the Duke of York’s Theatre in the West End of London, where it was produced by Sonia Friedman Productions and the Almeida Theatre. This amateur production of INK is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd. www.concordtheatricals.co.uk
Jerusalem

Jerusalem

15 Oct 2026 - 17 Oct 2026

Harrogate Dramatic Society presents Jerusalem, by Jez Butterworth Widely acclaimed as one of the best plays of the 21st century. This rich, rollicking, lyrical play, set on St George’s Day in a Wiltshire wood tells the story of Johnny Byron, a local waster, who is about to be evicted from his caravan. There are allusions to Jerusalem by William Blake, the mythology of ancient Albion, the giants who ruled here before humans and built Stonehenge, and the lengths people will go to when playing Trivial Pursuit. The play is funny, vivid and complex, drawing high praise when performed around the world. It looks at what we want from our countryside. Should everything be regulated? Is there no place for revels? Anarchy? Johnny “Rooster” Byron was originally played by Mark Rylance in what was considered one of the greatest performances in recent theatrical history. Byron is part Falstaff, part pied piper; a storyteller, wordsmith of Shakespearean level and general thorn in the side of the locals living in the nearby housing estate. The council want to serve him an eviction notice, his son wants to be taken to the country fair, a stepfather wants to give him a serious kicking and a motley crew of “friends” wants his ample supply of drugs and alcohol. The play contains strong language and drug references and is unsuitable for children. Circle Awards and the 2010 Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Award for Best Play. Rylance won the 2010 Olivier and 2009 Evening Standard and London Critics’ Circle Best Actor Awards for his performance. This amateur production of Jerusalem,by Jez Butterworth is presented by arrangement with Nick Hern Books.
100 Year Celebration of Laurel and Hardy
Neil Brand invites you to celebrate the centenary of Laurel & Hardy with a brand-new show. In 1926, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy signed separate contracts with Hollywood film mogul Hal Roach, and appeared for the first time in a film together, 45 Minutes from Hollywood. The following year they would become an official comedy partnership that would set the whole world rocking with laughter. Nobody could have anticipated at the time how this unlikely Anglo/American comedy duo would become global icons in over 130 countries around the world. We are pleased to announce and celebrate those 100 years with the brand new production of Neil Brand’s Evening with Laurel & Hardy 2026 Centenary Tour. Neil has established himself as the foremost exponent of silent film and improvised piano accompaniment. Thanks to new restorations of their silent films, and the rediscovery of some of their lesser-known comedies, Neil will uncover gems of hilarity from the team whose comedy never ages, and bring them to jaw-dropping life with the demanding live piano improvisations for which he is so famous. Featuring extended scenes from the best of their silent comedies, particularly You’re Darn Tootin’, The Finishing Touch and The Second Hundred Years. Neil’s concerts have proved really popular with his personal contact with the audience and his unique insight into Laurel & Hardy and the birth of the cinema industry. His engaging easy-going style, along with his Q&A at the end of the show answering all the questions from the audience, followed by his after-show meet and greet, makes for a highly entertaining evening. Currently working on a television documentary and a new book about ‘The Boys’, Neil is once again looking forward to sharing his knowledge and expertise with audiences around the country, and celebrating the life and times of comedy legends, Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy.

Simon Yates - My Mountain Life

Simon Yates - My Mountain Life

24 Apr 2026 - 29 Nov 2026

A fascinating and humorous evening, acclaimed by both regular theatre patrons and outdoor enthusiasts alike! On the remote Siula Grande in Peru in June 1985, mountaineer Simon Yates found himself in a desperately unenviable position. He was slowly being pulled off the mountain face by his injured partner, Joe Simpson, dangling on the rope 50 metres below. His decision to cut the rope saved both their lives in the epic of survival that followed. With the publication of the book Touching The Void, and later the film and stage play, both climbers became household names. It was an experience that could have put many off the sport of mountaineering - but not Simon. Over 35 years later, he is still a very active exploratory climber and guide, making several expeditions to the mountains each year. From the Arctic to the Antarctic, Alaska to Central Asia there is hardly a significant range that he has not visited. Come along and witness Simon’s tireless journey from that mountain in Peru to some of the remotest on the planet and share with him the drama, excitement and beauty of modern, lightweight alpinism. Told with wit, dry humour and lavishly illustrated with images and film collected on his great climbs.

Emergence Triple Bill

Emergence Triple Bill

20 May 2026 - 22 May 2026

Emergence, the touring postgraduate dance company of Joss Arnott Dance and University of Salford presents a new triple bill of adrenaline-fuelled dance for this year’s programme, performed by a new company of extraordinary dancers. Jason Mabana premieres Our Guests, a new creation for Emergence Dance that invites audiences into a world seen through newborn eyes. This vivid work follows a community of sensual, otherworldly beings as they encounter their surroundings for the very first time. Blurring the line between the intimate and the surreal, Our Guests traces a shared journey of curiosity, connection, and an evolving communal language expressed through the body. Accompanied by original sound by Dylan Jones, whose music deepens the work’s emotional landscape and heightens its sense of discovery. Jason’s unmistakable architectural choreography intertwines with the distinct energy of the Emergence 2026 cohort, resulting in a physical landscape that feels alive, shifting, and entirely its own. Our Guests offers a rare glimpse into a world being discovered in real time. Faye Stoeser unveils Rapture, a charged new work that dives deep into the pulse of club culture. Known for infusing her choreography with this theme, Faye pushes further this time, exploring the moment when fun fractures into chaos. What happens when fun goes too far? Where does exhilaration become something darker? Yet even in the shadows, Rapture finds celebration-liberation bursting through the cracks. Drawing from Faye’s rich movement background in new way voguing, commercial, and contemporary dance, the piece weaves these vocabularies with the raw individuality of the Emergence 2026 dancers, shaping a world that feels both intensely personal and wildly collective. Artistic Director Joss Arnott and Lisa Marie Robinson complete the 2026 triple bill with a restaging of Euphoria - a work that pulses with Arnott’s signature, high-voltage movement language and driven by an electrifying soundtrack from composer James Keane, whose music propels the work with both urgency and exhilaration. This dynamic piece delves into the tangled terrain of ego, its fragility, its fire and the transformative journey that can lead us toward euphoria. Please note: This programme contains loud music, the use of haze and flashing lights (no strobe).
