The Museum's collections continue to grow and it now has around 97,000 objects of local history, natural sciences, fine & decorative arts, and world cultures. A brand new gallery on early local history Before Hastings, which tells the story of this area from prehistory to the Saxons. Wildlife is displayed in dioramas of different local habitats, and you can discover our preshistoric past in our interactive Dinosaur gallery. Our fine Native North American collection is displayed in three galleries, featuring the Plains and Sub-Arctic areas and the life of Hastings-born celebrity conservationist Grey Owl. The most spectacular part of the Museum is the magnificent Durbar Hall, constructed for the Colonial & Indian Exhibition in 1886. Mango Ritual - with Akila Richards and Friends
Mango Ritual is a captivating live experience inspired by Akila Richards’ 2024 poetry pamphlet 'Ritual for a Mango' (available to purchase). Step into a world of requiem and rapture—an exploration of what it means to be human, to feel deeply, and to imagine a more expansive collective future. Award-winning poet Akila Richards leads this poetic ritual, joined by an extraordinary lineup of artists: Cuban Afro-Latin singer, songwriter and poet Adriana Lord; British-Congolese vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Liz Ikamba; and dynamic cellist and performing artist Simone Seales. The performance also features a powerful short film interpretation of the central poem, choreographed and danced by Munya Muchati, with layered spoken word and evocative recorded music. Each performance will have an Artist Talk at the same location earlier on the same day. Keep an ear out for the upcoming Mango Ritual Digital Soundscape, launching October 2025.
