"Dar Williams, one of America's very best singer-songwriters… Her songs are beautiful. Some are like finely crafted short stories. Lilly Hiatt

Lilly Hiatt

20 Oct 2025 - 26 Oct 2025

Lilly Hiatt's love of the '90s alt-rock she was raised on shines through on Trinity Lane in the distressed guitars and urgent backbeats. She cites the Pixies, Breeders, Dinosaur Jr., and her favourites, Pearl Jam as influences, but there is also something distinctly Americana lurking in the songs. After moving out of an ex's house, Hiatt settled into a new apartment off of Trinity Lane in her East Nashville neighbourhood and went on tour with friend John Moreland to the West Coast and back. The intensely personal, autobiographical album was written largely upon her return, in isolation, facing the issues she escaped while on the road. Every time she wanted a man, she picked up her guitar. Every time she wanted a drink, she picked up her guitar. Hiatt says, 'Love will take you to the darkest places but also the most honest places if you let it. Learning how to love myself is something I've always been lousy with, and I spent some time on that. I thought about my sobriety, what that means to me, the struggles I'd had throughout the years, since I was a 27-year-old and hung up my toxic drinking habit. I thought about my mother, who took her own life when I was a baby, not far from my age at 30 years old, and I related to her more than ever. As you can see, there was plenty of time spent on my own. I didn't talk to that many folks, albeit a few close friends, and leaned into my family. I stayed away from men, and danced alone in the evenings, looking out my window observing my humble and lively neighbourhood. I found power in being by myself. I found peace in the people I was surrounded with we didn't really know one another, but we smiled when passed on the street. One time I almost rear-ended an older woman in her car backing out of my driveway and I said, Oh man, I'm just not used to any cars coming around this bend. She replied, This is our little hideout, baby, And it really was.' She continues, 'After a while, I had all these songs to play, and wanted to share them. I wanted to get out of town to get some distance from everything, so after an ongoing conversation with Michael Trent, I took my band to Johns Island, SC and we holed up for a few weeks. I poured my heart out, and trusted them with it, and these guys gave it right back. I think we all understood what it's like to question home, intention, demons, love I think most people understand that.' Lilly Hiatt returned with Trinity Lane in August 2017. The 12-song set was produced by Michael Trent of Shovels & Rope and engineered by Andy Dixon at Trent's Studio Bees in Johns Island, SC. In addition to her backing band, Trent is featured as a musician throughout, and is joined by his wife and Shovels & Rope partner Cary Ann Hearst for backing vocals on Everything I Had. 'Lilly is as real and honest of a songwriter as they come,' says Trent. 'Fearless and thoughtful and a total joy to be around.' NPR Music is premiering the full album as a First Listen, stating, 'On Trinity Lane, the third album by this fixture of Nashville's indie scene and first for New West she's devoted to excruciatingly revealing expression, deftly manipulating the tone and perspective of her songwriting from track to track. Her treatment of pain can, remarkably, feel both considered and diaristic.' They continue, 'Her willingness to portray herself in moments of anger or neediness that others might deem unseemly, particularly coming from a woman, and to examine gender divisions in emotional labor at close range, is courageous and affecting.' Paste Magazine previously premiered the video for the album's single The Night David Bowie Died, exclaiming that Trinity Lane is 'going to be one for the books'. Of the song, Hiatt offered, 'The night David Bowie died, I was in disbelief. I wanted to talk to someone, but it was too late to make a phone call. I cried quietly and went to bed. The next day, I picked up my guitar and hit record on Garage Band. I started to sing and those were the first words that came out. I felt like Bowie was giving me a little gift.'

Fini Bearman

Fini Bearman

5 Jun 2025 - 5 Jun 2025

Fini Bearman - vocals, Al Cherry - guitar, Conor Chaplin - bass & Chris Higginbottom - drums Fini Bearman is a superb vocalist who took over from Brigitte Beraha as vocal tutor for the last few years of the Falmouth Jazz Summer School, and is Professor of Jazz Songwriting at London's Guildhall School. Visiting the club for the first time, she is touring nationally with her band of A-list London jazz musicians. Fini tours regularly across Europe and notable performances include Ronnie Scott's, The Sage Gateshead, The Barbican, The A-Trane (Berlin), Cafe Mercedes Jazz (Valencia), Manzioli (Izola, Slovenia) and Dizzy's (Jazz at the Lincoln Center, New York). Festival highlights include the London Jazz Festival, Manchester Jazz Festival, Berlin Jazz Festival, 'Jazz Voices' in Lithuania and Voicingers' in Poland. For this tour she is presenting music from her 5th studio album "Last Night of the World" (Pastiche Records). An eclectic collection of jazz, folk & pop-infused songs, Last Night of the World draws on Finis experiences of motherhood & new beginnings, of love & loss, sometimes of a new-found sense of meaning, sometimes an existential lack thereof! The record was conceived using writing exercises created for her work teaching songwriting, and these seeds grew over time, coming to fruition in tandem with her pregnancy; final vocal and instrumental takes often taking place with Bridget asleep in a sling Inspiration for the songs is drawn from a diverse spectrum of influences: the melodic inventiveness of Madison Cunningham, the esoteric jazz/folk realms of Becca Stevens, Chris Thile, Paul Simon and the electronic, minimalist songwriting voice of Bjork. This album marks a departure from Finis last LP (the solo record La Loba, 2020) and acts as a return to her true musical north- a jazz-meets-indie-pop rhythm section playing lyric-based songs, with nuanced and at times complex harmonic structures and rhythmic idiosyncrasies. Each song is individual and unique in its own right, with space for improvisation, interaction and connection. Hopkins-Hammond Trio with Gary Alesbrook
Matt Hopkins - guitar, Ruth Hammond - organ, Scott Hammond - drums, Gary Alesbrook - trumpet/flugel The Hopkins-Hammond Trio was formed in 2016 to explore the classic organ trio line-up popularised by Jimmy Smith of Hammond organ, guitar and drums. It was immediately apparent that the players generated a special chemistry, and they have gone on to become one of the hardest grooving bands on the Bristol scene, playing tunes by the likes of John Scofield, Larry Goldings and Pat Metheny and their own originals. For this special event they are joined by outstanding trumpeter Gary Alesbrook. Matt Hopkins guitar. Matt's inventive and melodic guitar playing has been featured in groups as stylistically diverse as Andy Sheppards Hotel Bristol and Emily Wright & The Royals. He also takes the lead role in the Music of Pat Metheny project alongside pianist Dave Newton. Matt is also known as an instructor and educator, specialising in jazz improvisation. Scott Hammond drums. Scott is probably best known for playing rock music with Ian Anderson/Jethro Tull all over the globe since 2010 but he's not just a rocker. Jazz, especially in the organ trio setting, has always been close to Scott's heart and this trio shows a more subtle side to his playing. In the jazz world Scott has worked with Alan Barnes, Tina May, Herb Geller, Bobby Wellins, Jason Rebello, Pee Wee Ellis and many others. More recently Scott has formed funk band Jingu Bang to play early Herbie Hancock and Weather Report type material. Ruth Hammond - organ. Ruth has many strings to her bow as she is equally adept on organ, piano, saxophones, accordion and vocals. After graduating from Leeds College of Music in 1998, she became Runner Up in the Young Jazz Musician of the Year (on tenor saxophone). She has released a solo album "All The Good Things" which features her singing her own songs. She also plays sax in Jingu Bang alongside Scott, and is often heard around town with the Brass Junkies. Special guest: Gary Alesbrook - trumpet/flugelhorn. Gary studied jazz trumpet at Leeds College of Music. His debut jazz album, "Jazz In Movies," was released in 2018 and his second album "The Stories We Tell Ourselves" was released in 2019. Alesbrook started his session career in 1999 with the Super Furry Animals, touring and playing on the albums 'Mwng, Rings Around the World, Hey Venus! and Phantom Power. He also played on Gruff Rhys solo album, Hotel Shampoo. Alesbrook recorded with Kasabian in 2006 playing "The Doberman" on their second album "Empire." He toured next with the Scissor Sisters on their UK dates and for their live DVD recorded July 2007 at London O2 arena. He then joined Kasabian for recording and touring from 2007 until the present day, recording on Empire, West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum, Velociraptor! 48:13 and most recently For Crying Out Loud. In between Kasabian commitments Alesbrook also toured and performed with US RnB artist Raphael Saadiq, Kelis, Rag 'N' Bone Man, Nadine Coyle and recorded on albums KT Tunstall, Tiger Suit and Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. A simple scroll through Instagram or TikTok and you’ll be left questioning: do I have ADHD? The rise in ADHD in adults is undeniable. But only over the last decade has ADHD been formally recognised in the UK. It has been suggested that about 1.5 million adults in the UK have ADHD but only 120,000 have been diagnosed. From dopamine dips, hits and myths, how ADHD can present differently in women than men, and the neuroscience of neurodiversity; this talk is designed to give you an increased awareness and understanding of an ADHD brain. It will include advice and tips on how to navigate a neurotypical world as a neurodivergent perso This talk will also highlight how society is demanding change. People are increasingly recognising and accepting neurodiversity and self-defining as neurodivergent. The History of Witchcraft and Feminism
The witch is a deeply important and appealing figure, and her story is more relevant than ever. Witches weren’t evil, and they certainly didn’t wear pointy black hats. Instead, society has long used the idea of the witch as a dumping ground for everything it fears or hates in women. Witches are old—too old to be sexy, too old to bear children—and even today, we stigmatise older women as “problematic” or “ugly”. Exploring the true history of witches reveals much about ourselves, how we got here, and how we can change. But who hunted witches? Surprisingly, it wasn’t mostly men. It was often younger women, pressured by patriarchal systems to blame older women in exchange for temporary favour—favour that disappeared as they aged. This history still echoes today, as generational divides between women persist and even worsen. Learning about witches reminds us of the importance of solidarity between generations—why we must stand together to break free from these old patterns.
Folklore And Feminism With Dr Shelby Judge
For centuries, feminist writers and thinkers have turned to myths, legends, fairytales, religious stories, and cultural traditions to make sense of women’s experiences. All of these come under the umbrella of ‘folklore’. This talk will explore the enduring relevance of folklore, asking how these stories can be reclaimed and reimagined for the 21st-century feminist. We’ll trace figures like the witch, the shapeshifter, and the maiden across different traditions, examining the societal norms they were created to enforce and how feminist thinkers have reshaped them into symbols of resistance and possibility. Finally, we will ask why we continually return to ancient stories to tell new ones - does this suggest that we’re out of new stories, or is it a part of a longstanding literary tradition in women’s writing, to look back, to subvert dominant myths, and to challenge the patriarchal ideas embedded in our society? Speaker Bio: Dr Shelby Judge is a Lecturer in Creative and Cultural Industries at the University of Derby, where she researches digital feminist and popular feminist responses to Incels and the Manosphere. She recently completed her PhD in English Literature at the University of Glasgow, for which she produced the thesis Contemporary Feminist Adaptations of Greek Myth. Due to the proliferating nature of this genre, Shelby’s work in this field is ongoing. Presented by Seed Talks This is an 18+ event
