The image of Guy Clark and friends sitting around the kitchen table loaded with ashtrays full of butts, half-smoked cigarettes, food, and booze on one Christmas Eve in 1975 burned into Taylors soul. Those guys, swapping songs without pretense, lit Willy Teas fire. And ever since, its led purpose with passion finding a hang by curating relationships through musical friendships that get him closer to his own Clark style kitchen table. From his early days co-fronting The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit, to singing solo in countless cowboy bars, to pitching countless wiffle ball games, Willy Tea has never lost the vision. Now Willy Tea Taylor has taken his vision of the hero hang on the road. and his talented traveling band The Fellership is made up of his fantastically talented buds who play Willys songs with a brand of reckless abandon and utter humility that spits in the face of pretense. Heathen Apostles

Heathen Apostles

1 Jul 2026 - 14 Aug 2026

Born of the voices of past lives and baptized in the dust bowl dirt, the Gothic Americana music of the Heathen Apostles harkens back to a bygone chapter of American history. Using contrasting influences such as Bauhaus, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and The Pogues along with Howlin’ Wolf, Loretta Lynn and Bessie Smith, the Heathen Apostles have created a style of music that at once conjures both angels and demons, and will enlighten a darkened soul. Gothic Americana is a genre that is fast taking hold around the world, in that it combines the sub-genres of gothic country & bluegrass, dark blues, murderfolk and depression-era jazz. The Heathen Apostles are amongst the first to inject all four into their incendiary music.

Known by many names, she was most often called the Queen of the Fairies. In this talk, we’ll explore Britain’s lost fairy traditions through this enigmatic figure. From early medieval pagan beliefs - including links to the goddess Diana - to later connections with saints and angels, we’ll trace how her story evolved across time. We’ll uncover accounts of Scottish witches said to draw power from her, alongside those who feared her influence - and explore why the Presbyterian Kirk sought to suppress these stories. Finally, we’ll examine what these stories reveal about women, power and belief in Britain’s past. Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7:30pm - come down early to grab a good seat! Follow us on IG @seedtalks Speaker Bio: Diane Purkiss is Professor of English at the University of Oxford, and a fellow of Keble College. So impressed with this record, wow, its current, its hip Linley Hamilton, BBC Radio Ulsters Jazz World. it's the variety of the musical structures deployed, as well as the sheer spirit and fire in these performances that makes this a significant milestone for Hague and his chums Peter Vacher, four star review in Jazzwise March 2019. Liam Brennan's Abacus

11 Jun 2026 - 11 Jun 2026

Liam Brennan - alto sax, James Romaine - alto sax, James Borland - trumpet, Simeon May - tenor sax/bass clarinet, Josh Vadiveloo - bass, Kai Chareunsy - drums. Abacus is a project run by Birmingham based saxophonist, composer and improvisor Liam Brennan. Formed in 2022, the project concept was heavily influenced by Omer Avital’s Asking No Permission which featured a 4-horn frontline. The music aims to combine concepts from both the jazz small group tradition as well as the big band lineage. It features some of the most exciting improvisors from Birmingham and London. Liam Brennan performs regularly around the midlands with a variety of artistically fulfilling projects both as a leader and a sideman. He currently holds the 1st alto chair in the Midlands Youth Jazz Orchestra, performs with Matt Holmes’ Quintet, Maria Graspa Quintet and Collidescope. Since October 2021 he has been running Jazz At The Spotted Dog with Kai Chareunsy. Liam was recently selected by Jazz Central Midlands to be part of their mentoring scheme, and has been working under the mentorship of Laura Jurd. Recent commissions aside from the mentoring scheme include an arrangement for large ensemble to celebrate the 85th Birthday of world-renown composer Mike Gibbs, as well as arranging the standard ‘Every Time We Say Goodbye’ for saxophonist Xhosa Cole. For Abacus Liam has chosen to include two alto saxes, resulting in an interesting sound due to the similar registers between the altos and trumpet. This has forced compositions to explore more textural possibilities as well as orchestral, creating a truly unique and original sound. Other influences include John Taylor, Gil Evans and Charles Mingus, as well as the Joe Lovano Nonet. Since the beginning of this project, Liam has been mentored by saxophonist and composer Alex Merritt, who has also been an important influence in arranging for the ensemble.

Terra Spencer

Terra Spencer

20 Apr 2027 - 20 Apr 2027

A solo performance from an award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter. Bad ideas, VCRs, crumbling factories, hairy dogs, questionable tattoos...all are fair game for Nova Scotian funeral director-turned-songwriter Terra Spencer. And the songs are good ones, judging from the accolades her four albums have received, and from the caliber of her collaborators, which include David Francey, Dave Gunning, and Matt Andersen. Although her butterscotch voice, deft fingerstyle guitar, and gospel-charged piano make her a formidable musician, it's her onstage ease and crackling wit that make each show feel like a knee-to-knee conversation in a room of 5 or 500. The real deal. - Ron Sexsmith
Mark Thomas: 40 in Stand Up Years

Mark Thomas: 40 in Stand Up Years

24 May 2026 - 13 Dec 2026

What?! Mark Thomas has been ‘standing up’ for 40 years? Impossible!! But how old does that make you…? Alas it is true; one of our oldest surviving alternative comics celebrates 40 years at the mic as he takes his brand-new show on the road this autumn. So, here’s what he has done so far in numbers; performed comedy for 40 years, won 8 awards for performing, 4 for human rights work and 1 he invented for himself, made 6 series of the Mark Thomas Comedy Product (Channel 4), written 6 books and 5 play scripts, made 5 series of the Manifesto for Radio 4, made 3 Dispatches for Channel 4, sued the police (and won) 3 times, curated and authored 2 art exhibitions with artist Tracey Moberly and had 1 Guinness World Record for holding 20 protests in 24 hours. If that’s not enough, he’s also walked 724km around the length of the Israel Wall in the West Bank, been credited with changing the law on tax avoidance, started a comedy club in Palestine with Dr Sam Beale and campaigned successfully for things like trade union recognition for cinema workers and getting multinationals to change their practices. You’re right, there’s more, but your attention is running out and we’re running out of space. So, let’s just say he’s generally mucked about trying to have fun and upset the right people…which he is really, really good at. This is a taster menu of political and personal mayhem, jokes, rants and a state of the nation broadcast as he tries to turn ‘what the hell is going on’ into a cogent evening of stand-up.

The Science Of Dmt & Ayahuasca

22 Jun 2026 - 22 Jun 2026

This talk explores the intersection between the scientific, therapeutic, psychonautic, and shamanic exploration of the DMT realm and attempts to fuse these disparate and yet overlapping cosmologies. N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), dubbed the ‘spirit molecule,’ is an extremely potent short acting psychedelic substance. It is found naturally in the human body and is abundant in other areas of nature. It has been theorised that DMT is released at birth, near-death experiences and even when we dream! The traditional indigenous use of DMT in the Amazonian visionary decoction, ayahuasca, known as the ‘vine of the dead,’ has a long history of shamanic use to transcend time and space and communicate with the spirits of nature. Most people experiencing a breakthrough dose of DMT report encounters with seemingly sentient, intelligent and independent entities, which typically convey a convincing sense of their reality, such that a recent survey found that of those having such encounters who reported being atheist before their experience, more than half reported that they were no longer atheist afterwards. This talk explores the intersection between the scientific, therapeutic, psychonautic, and shamanic exploration of the DMT realm and attempts to fuse these disparate and yet overlapping cosmologies. Sylvia Plath, Witchcraft & Radical Poetry
Explore the politics of the witch trials and powerful witch imagery in Sylvia Plath’s poetry. Followed by Q&A. Sylvia Plath is best known for her novel The Bell Jar (1963) and her emotive, striking poetry. She grew up in Massachusetts, close to Salem, a place closely linked to the history of the witch trials. During the 1950s, renewed public interest in these events influenced Plath’s writing and imagination. Plath often used images of witches and witch trials to explore power, identity and injustice. Her poetry reflects her concerns about control and authority in society, while also showing sympathy for those unfairly accused. In this talk, Dr Dorka Tamás explores how Plath connects with witchcraft and poetic language, and how the figure of the witch appears in different forms in her work. We’ll look at the contrast between fictional “evil” witches from fairy tales and the real historical victims who were accused of witchcraft, and punished by patriarchal systems of power.
