The List

His Majesty's Theatre

His Majesty's Theatre was commissioned to replace Aberdeen's smaller Her Majesty's Theatre. Designed by the great Frank Matcham and opened in 1906, it was refurbished in the early 1930s by local businessman James F Donald, who added external neon lighting to give Aberdeen that hint of Broadway, and a revolving stage. It has received further refurbishments in the early 1980s and 2000s, and supposedly has its own ghost roaming the corridors, named Jake. The theatre receives major touring shows, operas and stand-up comedy. Aberdeen station is ten minutes' walk away, and the theatre is served by the 3, 3G, 4, 12, 37, 59, 220, 305, 420, N37 and X20 bus routes.

25 Sept 2026 - 26 Sept 2026

Enter a mesmerising underworld where human-kind dissolves into something altogether more elemental. Crystal Pite’s Emergence is a breathtaking fusion of classical ballet and raw, insect-like movement that casts dancers as swarming creatures in a darkly beautiful universe, creating spectacular formations that blur the boundaries between individual and collective consciousness. Drawing from swarm intelligence research and bee colony behaviour, Pite explores the tension between our craving for individual agency and our deep need for collective belonging. Set to Owen Belton’s haunting music, the full company transforms into a living, breathing super-organism, moving with the urgent precision of a hive mind. “Like the best works of art, it transforms its audience, as well as its participants” (The Seattle Times). Returning to Scotland for the first time in ten years, this bold piece showcases the explosive physicality and artistry of Scottish Ballet. Joining Emergence is a world premiere from Julia Cheng, the acclaimed choreographer behind Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club and Fiddler on the Roof, whose boundary-crossing work has earned Olivier and Chita Rivera Award nominations. Cheng’s new work features an original score and a stellar creative team. Prepare to be consumed by two of contemporary dance’s most electrifying choreographers.

Trainspotting: The Musical

Trainspotting: The Musical

11 Jan 2027 - 16 Jan 2027

Thirty years on from the film that changed everything, TRAINSPOTTING: THE MUSICAL has its world premiere. Written by Irvine Welsh with Music & Lyrics by Stephen McGuinness & Irvine Welsh and Directed & Developed by Caroline Jay Ranger. Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie, Spud, Tommy, and Kelly, the industrial drug-crazed working-class heroes, are back. I n 1996, CHOOSE LIFE sounded like a challenge. Thirty years on, the landscape has shifted, but the hunger hasn’t. Addiction hasn’t disappeared – it’s shifted. It’s quieter now, more embedded. Less needle, more screen. Less escape, more repetition. The same restless search for something to fill the space. The musical highlights the world we see changing around us, the obscene concentration of wealth, economic and political power in the hands of so few people. It addresses the modern culture of powerlessness. Art the singing-and-dancing Trojan horse that delivers direction and relevance. This isn’t nostalgia, it’s closer than that. The past isn’t revisited – it lingers. The musical doesn’t tidy it. It sits with it. Listens to it. And lets it sing. New songs, classic songs, a musical like never before. Not for the easily confronted. It’s funny, loud, dynamic, and brings a dark dangerous energy never experienced before on the West End stage. “I believe the musical has a bigger, loudly beating human heart than either the book or the film. People need to think about the world we’re living in, and we offer that inspection, but they also really need to sing their hearts out and laugh their heads off – it’s what being human is all about.” Irvine Welsh, April 2026 There are no clean answers here. Only incredible music and flashes of clarity, humour, and the uneasy sense of recognition. CHOOSE LIFE. Group discounts available (excludes rear stalls and balcony): Groups 8 plus: £5 off per ticket Groups 20 plus: £6 off per ticket Groups 30 plus: £7 off per ticket 15+ with parental guidance
