Banco De Gaia

Banco De Gaia

30 May 2026 - 30 May 2026

A foundational figure in British electronic music, bringing together decades of ambient, dub, and world music-infused soundscapes. Toby Marks has been recording and performing as Banco de Gaia for over thirty years, becoming a central figure in the UK’s electronic and ambient landscapes. Formed in 1989, the project emerged during the original wave of acid house and ambient house, eventually evolving into a sophisticated blend of global instrumentation and electronic production. Marks’ early work remains a significant part of the electronic music canon. His debut studio album, Maya (1994), was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and reached number one on the UK Independent Albums Chart. It was followed in 1995 by the critically acclaimed Last Train to Lhasa, which also topped the independent charts and reached the top 40 of the UK Albums Chart. These records, along with tracks like Heliopolis, helped establish a blueprint for global electronica by integrating field recordings and international samples with club-focused production. His music is notable for its layered approach, drawing on a broad palette of influences that includes the atmospheric textures of Pink Floyd alongside elements of reggae, jazz, and progressive rock. His output incorporates rock, worldbeat, and jazz, creating a sound that ranges from driving rhythms to more ambient, evolving electronic textures and landscapes. Presented by Howard Assembly Room. The Bad Plus - Farewell Tour

4 Jul 2026 - 4 Jul 2026

The Bad Plus return for their final tour, marking the end of a 25-year career as one of the most influential and adventurous ensembles in modern jazz. Founded in 2000, the group has spent a quarter of a century pushing the boundaries of the genre. Founders Reid Anderson and Dave King have built a reputation for a fearless approach to composition, famously pairing original works with an unconventional array of covers. Their repertoire has reached far beyond the traditional jazz bubble, spanning everything from Ornette Coleman and Cole Porter to Black Sabbath, Aphex Twin, and Nirvana. This eclecticism was never about irony - instead, it served as a way to find new modes of expression, staying true to the dauntless spirit of the jazz tradition. Their 2003 breakthrough album, These Are Vistas, was named one of the 50 most important recordings of the decade by NPR’s All Songs Considered. Now on their 18th album, the band continues to produce music that is wild and unexpected. The 2026 Farewell Tour serves as a career-spanning celebration of the innovation and spirit that defined the group. These performances offer a final opportunity to experience a band that consistently refused to conform to convention. Presented by Howard Assembly Room. This is an 14+ event
