Ray Cooper

Ray Cooper

8 Nov 2025 - 8 Nov 2025

The date for this show is changing and ticket sales are temporarily suspended whilst the new date is being sorted. Ray Cooper is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who accompanies his songs with cello, mandolin, guitar and piano. Each song comes with a story - and Ray has a lot of great stories! Ray started to play in bands when he was just 16 and worked with a lot of different groups across many musical genres. This led to him becoming an in demand session musician for well known producers including Steve Lillywhite and Martin Rushent. He worked as a singer, bass guitar player and cellist before hooking up with Oysterband and beginning a long exploration into his own roots. Oysterband toured in 27 countries and Ray recorded 19 albums with them. In 2012 they won 3 awards at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards for best group, best album and best traditional track, appeared on “Later with Jools Holland ” and were dubbed by fROOTS magazine as one of the 3 ‘Icons of Folk’. Despite their success, Ray took the decision to leave the band in 2013. He has since carved out a very successful solo career, recording four critically acclaimed albums and touring extensively in Britain, Northern Europe and Canada. Ray will be releasing his fifth album ‘Even Like A Shadow ’ on the 3rd May and says this about the record: ‘ A journey, and a long one, over forty solo tours in the last twelve years and a lot of time to think. I get many of my song ideas when I am driving; it is also the only time I listen to music. These songs are my memories, imagined conversations and thoughts. This album is like a car journey and the kind of radio I would like to hear, but rarely find’ Ray recorded most of the instruments himself at home in Sweden, using piano, guitars, cello, bass, harmonica, harmonium, mandolin, percussion and kantele, but got support from John Eriksson on drums, Gustav Andersson on piano, Ben Paley on fiddle, Anders Peev on nyckelharpa, Hamburg church musicians on trumpets and trombones and vocals from Emma Härdelin, Sunniva Bondesson and Kathryn Roberts. Ray will be touring extensively in support of the album and will make his first visit to the Canopy Theatre in Beccles on 12th October – his second show for Martello after a hugely successful gig at the Seagull Theatre in Pakefield in 2022. Some press reactions to Ray's previous album Land Of Heroes :- Maverick magazine: ‘ Land of Heroes proves to be an exceptional album from an awe-inspiring musician and a must in any music lovers collection’ RnR magazine '...it will draw you in, like Scandi noir television, and you’ll keep going back for more'. Fatea Magazine ‘… yet another magnificent album, which oozes class......Land of Heroes' is veritable feast, and in it, its creator, Ray Cooper, demonstrates the work of a songsmith of exceptional originality, perspicacity and talent.' Fatea also had this to say about the first single from the new album - “ Falling Like Thunder… is a remarkable song with a very clear message of social conscience, and whets the appetite for the full album.” Nominated as “Male Artist of the Year” in 2022 by FATEA Magazine, Ray is an exceptional performer and this is a show you won’t want to miss. Bertie Anderson Haggart

Bertie Anderson Haggart

27 Sept 2025 - 27 Sept 2025

Bertie Anderson Haggart(aka Bertie Bow) is an award-winning musician and composer from North Norfolk. She is best known as lead singer and songwriter in English folk swing band The BeauBowBelles and Musical Director & performer in the award-winning theatrical, musical comedy string group Bowjangles (who have performed in Portugal, China and New York as well as all around the UK - including at Glastonbury Festival and Edinburgh Fringe where they won the Spirit of the Fringe award 2018 for Excalibow. ) Berties music has been featured on BBC 6 Introducing, BBC Wales, BBC Radio Norfolk and BBC Radio London. Her project Poppyland Songs; Life On A Cliff Edge won theEDP Norfolk Arts Award for music. The accompanying podcast has been aired on BBC Radio Norfolk. The song cycle is inspired by the incredible discovery of a hidden hoard of journals found in the house where Bertie grew up in Sidestrand, North Norfolk. Written by her great-great Aunt Kit Hood (ne Hoare), they document the rural lives of her neighbours over a hundred years ago. Bertie was inspired to set the words to music and in doing so find out more about the history of where she grew up. The results are brought to life on an album by Bertie, her sister Evie Anderson and an ensemble of exceptionally talented Norfolk musicians. " 'Poppyland Songs' cycle is a magical collection, drawn from the Cromer and Overstrand district... Poignant and moving." - David Auckland Outline Magazine "Beautiful, can't stop singing it" - Kirsteen Thorne BBC Norfolk It was a brilliant show Cromer Arts Space Festival Berties latest solo project entitled TILT is a song cycle which takes as its starting point the fact that the earth's spin axis is tilted with respect to its orbital plane, which causes the seasons. When the earth's axis points towards the sun, it is summer for that hemisphere. When the earth's axis points away, winter can be expected. The lyrics are both in the voice of Gaia and the observer, weaving between the perspectives whilst also considering the female cycle mirroring the seasons. Combining different compositional and production techniques Bertie weaves field recordings into the music bringing a sense of optimism and joy whilst cradling a sense of nostalgia and loss to match the eternal turning of the seasons. She composed the 4 main songs, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter over a 12 month period, writing each song during it's respective season. At the same time she collected field recordings which she used to create interconnecting electro- acoustic compositions. The project was featured to stunning effect as part of an exhibit at theRaveningham Sculpture Trail in 2023. She is releasing one song every month starting in April 2024. This will be her first appearance in Beccles and the performance will be in two parts, the first featuring songs from Poppyland and the second songs from TILT and Bertie will be accompanied by her sister Evie on cello and vocals. This will be a truly special and unique show that you will not want to miss! Sarah McQuaid

Sarah McQuaid

22 May 2025 - 31 Jan 2026

Recently honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Ards International Guitar Festival in Northern Ireland, Sarah’s also drawn critical praise for her voice (which has been variously likened to malt whiskey and melted chocolate) and her engaging rapport with audiences: “I’ve attended hundreds of concerts of all kinds, and her subtle mastery onstage launches her straight into my fave shows ever,” wrote The Huffington Post. With the release of her new album, the Madrid-born, Chicago-raised, Cornwall-based singer/songwriter has expanded her battery of instruments to include piano, electric guitar and drum, and it’s drawn critical raves internationally. Dutch music magazine Heaven hailed it as “an early contender for folk album of 2018,” the UK’s fRoots said it was “a collection to savour” and the USA’s PopMatters called it “a gateway into a true innovator’s soul.”
The Black Feathers

The Black Feathers

31 May 2025 - 31 May 2025

If you were of the belief thatThe Black Feathers are named because of their love of dark humour and the smooth blending of harmony, youd be wrong, BUT you would be utterly correct that the sonic architecture of their lyrics and musical composition takes its imperious scope from a love of blended vocal harmony and idiosyncratic guitar shapes. Americana to some, folk to others,The Black Feathers have those qualities in expansive quantity. Sian Chandlers soaring, dramatic, melodious but powerful voice is a perfect counterpoint to Ray Hughes piquant vocals and his sparkling and occasionally spicy guitar motifs. This is a duo who love what they play and play what they love with panache, humour, delight and rather a lot of commentary on the downside of being a human. Seeing and hearing them will leave you with a smile on your face and a glowing heart of delight. You might not think that is possible when youve just spent some time hearing the themes of the songs they lay before an audience but it is testament to their sunny dispositions, infectious laughter and amused self-deprecation that you can only come away from a gig feeling a whole heap better about yourself and life. "...stunning harmonies that were so good it reminded me of seeing Gillian Welch and David Rawlings - No Depression Magazine "The pure emotion and subtle timing of their song delivery is as evident as the enjoyment radiating from their onstage chemistry - 3 Chords and the Truth "Absolutely Wonderful" Bob Harris (BBC Radio 2) "Mesmerising and stunning in equal measure...An artistic triumph for a duo of undeniable talent. " -FATEA Magazine "Draws you in for a brilliant, effervescent ride from the moment you press play" ★★★★★ - Maverick Magazine As well as online sales, tickets may be purchased through the Ticketsource Telephone Booking Office on 0333 666 3366 For more info, music & video visit https://theblackfeathers.com

James Keelaghan

James Keelaghan

7 Jun 2025 - 7 Jun 2025

Canadas finest singer-songwriter -Dave Marsh, Rolling Stone magazine A joy to hear, just beautiful - Eric Bibb James Keelaghan is an artist who has proven to be a man for all seasons. For almost a quarter of a century now, this poet laureate of the folk and roots music world has gone about his work with a combination of passion, intent and intensity, and curiosity. Fusing his insatiable appetite for finding the next unique storyline Keelaghan also forges his pieces with brilliantly defined craftsmanship and a monogrammed artistic vision, making him one of the most distinctive and readily identifiable voices of not only the Canadian scene, but as a member of the international singer-songwriter community. Armed with a songbook that has enlightened and enthralled, and been embraced, by audiences around the world, Keelaghans life as an artist is one that is a perpetual journey on so many levels. Most importantly its a journey that has invited fans of literate and layered songwriting to be a part of his artistic expeditions, some that weave their way through marvellously etched stories of a historical nature with underlying universal themes, and others that mine the depths of the soul and the emotional trails of human relations. His masterful story telling, over the course of ten records, has been part of the bedrock of his success, earning Keelaghan his share of nominations and awards, and acclaim from Australia to Scandinavia. A disciplined visionary, Keelaghans aces have long been a love of language and history. His skills as a thespian explain his ability to make an immediate connection with audiences in a live setting, and he has an ear for a memorable melody, and harmonies that make those melodies glisten. Contemporary folk songs, at their very best, offer an insight into the hardships, attitudes, and resolve of characters and events that shape our day-to-day lives. You can dress these songs up in inspired arrangements and intricate instrumentation but, at their very essence, the archetypal folk song is all about the story and people. Something such compelling songwriters as Eric Bogle, Si Kahn, Ewan MacColl, and Stan Rogers all understood and mined so effectively. Truly, throughout a career that now spans almost four decades, the Juno and Canadian Folk Music Award winner has created a repertoire of incalculable importance a unique body of work, either inspired by or drawn from the folk tradition. Ten solo albums flush with enduring lyrical relevance. There have been several mouth-watering collaborations in the writing department. Celebrated names in the folk world such as Karine Polwart, Jez Lowe, Catherine MacLellan, Lynn Miles and Cara Luft have all contributed to notable Keelaghan releases. I love co-writing, he says, its the spark that gets me motivated the fresh approach to a lyric or a different way of forming a melody for a song is so stimulating.
