Steely Jazz re-examines the Dan canon, illuminating the singular melodies, lush harmonies and exploring the small jazz group possibilities of an incomparably rich songbook. Featuring well-known pieces (Rikki Dont Lose That Number, Josie), alongside classic tracks and deep cuts including highlights from the Chris Ingham Quintet's new CD Walter, Donald, Steely Jazz is a fresh, exciting celebration of two giants of 20th Century popular music. Miss Black America

Miss Black America

6 Sept 2025 - 6 Sept 2025

Washing Machine proudly presents MISS BLACK AMERICA 25th Anniversary Reunion Show in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care with special guests DAMP MATCHES HLLO KTTY FUN LAND MONDA KRIMLIGO More than two decades since they last played a hometown show together, the original line-up of 00s indie-punk dickheads MISS BLACK AMERICA are marking their 25th Anniversary with a one-off fundraiser for St Nicholas Hospice in Bury St Edmunds. Formed after a chance encounter at a drum 'n' bass night, Miss Black America (singing guitarist Seymour Quigley, guitarist Gish, bassist Mike Smith and drummer Neil Baldwin) were propelled into a low-wattage national spotlight after BBC radio legend John Peel enthusiastically championed their 2001 debut 'The Adrenaline Junkie Class-A Mentalist' EP on his Radio 1 show, prompting Rolling Stone magazine to over-enthusiastically dub Bury St Edmunds 'The New Seattle'. The ensuing 18-month whirlwind saw MBA touted as next big things by everyone from NME and Rock Sound to Scootering Magazine and The Guardian; the band recorded four Peel Sessions, two for Steve Lamacq, two for Radio X's John Kennedy and one of the first ever 6music sessions for Tom Robinson, and toured relentlessly (over 250 gigs, including supports with The Libertines, The Dandy Warhols, Liars and the Kaiser Chiefs), finally releasing a semi-lauded debut album, 'God Bless Miss Black America' (all five singles from which appeared in John Peels Festive Fifty, with the bands biggest near-hit, 'Talk Hard', hitting Number 3) before imploding through sheer exhaustion, musical differences and a crushing lack of income at the end of 2002. Now they're back, doing what they do best: playing a bunch of songs no-one ever wanted to hear again, and ruining your day. Support comes from Norwich's total rock heroes DAMP MATCHES, Bury-based avant-sludge insanicore trio HLLO KTTY FUN LAND and Ipswich's indescribably wonderful experimental outfit MONDA KRIMLIGO. Bonvolu alsendi la pordiston; laajne estas rano en mia bideo, as the Esperantinos would say. 7-11pm All ages welcome (under-14s with a parent/carer) £5 advance - all profits will be donated to St Nicholas Hospice in Bury St Edmunds To find out more about St Nicholas Hospice Care or donate directly, visit their website at www.stnicholashospice.org.uk There is a fully-licensed bar on the premises. Bag of Cans

Bag of Cans

20 Sept 2025 - 20 Sept 2025

Washing Machine proudly presents BAG OF CANS QUEEN DOGS SUB-LIMINAL OSCAR NOVEMBER HALF RETURN On Saturday 20th September, we're thrilled to the onions to welcome back the utterly mighty BAG OF CANS to The Hunter Club in Bury St Edmunds! With the launch of their debut album We Are A Band in June 2023, Bag of Cans managed to amaze and bewilder both listeners and their mums: not only were they very much a band but one that could release songs too. In late 2024 an EP called Favourite Shirt, with such songs as Favourite Shirt, was released, following a couple of years of tours and festival appearances. Capitalising on this momentum, they then pretty much immediately decided to take a break from gigging, in what is sure to be described as a 4D Chess move of utter brilliance and will be studied by industry moguls for years to come as one of the promotional plays of all time. Released on Fierce Panda, these collections of songs have attracted praise and airtime from BBC Radio 6 and the single Hostage at the Dinner Table was a joint winner on Steve Lamacq's Roundtable. The EP's titular tune Favourite Shirt got a load of inexplicable plays on KEXP in the states, which confused everyone even further and no one really knew what to do with that information. As the 'Cans now return from their slumber, they look to the autumn to throw themselves back into a great big puddle of gigs, and splash around for someone's amusement in their tried and tested wellies of slightly-deranged-indie-music. Supporting Bag of Cans will be punk/metal icons QUEEN DOGS, who've been playing at the Hunter Club since they were literally 8 years old and who, having reached the pinnacle of their considerable powers, have decided to call it a day, making this their sob last ever show. Come and cry with us while you cartwheel; together we can construct history's most emotional wall of death. Also on the bill will be post-punk heroes SUB-LIMINAL, hugely exciting wonky art rock ensemble OSCAR NOVEMBER and brand new stage-destroying future legends HALF RETURN 6-11pm All ages are welcome. Under-14s must be accompanied by a parent or carer. There is a fully-licensed bar on the premises. No ID, no alcohol. THE HUNTER CLUB IS A SAFE SPACE We take audience safety very seriously at The Hunter Club, and strongly believe that gigs can and should be safe spaces, free from harassment, intimidation, prejudice, bullying and violence.
