Reg Seekings: SAS Duty Before Glory....? with author Tony Rushmer
Come and join Tony Rushmer for his event - Reg Seekings: SAS Duty Before Glory....? on Wednesday 4th June for 7:00 pm. We have moved the event to Huntingdon Methodist Church (opposite the bookshop to allow a bigger audience and wheelchair access). There is a small car park at the church. Refreshments provided and copies of Tonys book just released in paperback. The biography of remarkable SAS Original Reg Seekings, from his humble beginnings in the Cambridgeshire Fens to his instrumental role in the success of the SAS during the Second World War. Starting at the very bottom of the ranks, Seekings was a farm labourer's son who climbed from private to squadron sergeant-major and became one of the British Army's most highly decorated non-commissioned officers of the Second World War. In short, Seekings wasan ordinary man who did extraordinary things. His is aremarkable story- one of fierce ambition, camaraderie, inner strength and heroism as he transcended humble beginnings in the Fen fields of Cambridgeshire. And he was there from the very first day of the SAS, which was born in the late summer of 1941. Using audio material from the Imperial War Museum and previously unseen material from Reg's collection of notebooks and handwritten accounts of operations, this is a comprehensive and engaging portrait of one of the unit's all-time greats. Author Biography: Tony Rushmer has been a journalist for twenty-five years, covering a wide range of top-class sport for national newspapers and magazines. His first book was the critically acclaimed The Triumph of Henry Cecil, which was one of three finalists for the 2019 Dr Tony Ryan Award. Anthony established his own sports PR business in 2005 and his clients have included Newmarket Racecourses, the PGA and World Snooker. He lives near Newmarket, in the UK.

About Holly Race is a novelist and screenwriter, with a particular interest in using fantasy and historical inspiration as springboards to interrogate issues of class, privilege, gender bias and political extremism. Her debut trilogy, the Midnights Twins series (Hot Key, 2020), uses Arthurian legend within an urban fantasy setting to explore the culture wars that leapt up in the wake of Brexit. Her next trilogy, Six Wild Crowns (Orbit, 2025), is an historical fantasy retelling of the six wives of Henry VIII as envisioned through an intersectional feminist lens. In 2022, Holly was the reading ambassador for educational charity PIXL, selecting and recommending a wide range of fiction and nonfiction books to appeal to teenage students. She continues to work with PIXL, whose aim of instilling a love of reading in young people is close to her heart. Prior to becoming a writer, Holly spent ten years as a script editor in film and television after graduating from Oriel College, Oxford with a degree in English, followed by the National Film and Television School with a diploma in script development. She has worked for companies such as Red Planet Pictures, the Imaginarium Studios, Working Title Films and Aardman Animations and on series such as popular cosy crime drama Death in Paradise. She remains connected to the screen world through occasional freelance editorial work and her own scriptwriting. Holly lives in Cambridge with her husband and daughter. When she isnt writing, she can usually be found renovating their crumbling Regency era townhouse.
A Wilding Year - nature across the Seasons. An illustrated talk with Hannah Dale
Thursday 19th June 2025 4:00 - 5:00 pm at Huntingdon Methodist Church. Enjoy an illustrated talk from Hannah Dale, the artist behind successful stationery and gift design company Wrendale Designs, about the ambitious rewilding project that she and her husband have undertaken on their 300-acre farm. When Hannah and Jack inherited his fathers farm in North Lincolnshire, they soon realised that the poor soil made it challenging for food production and the perfect candidate for rewilding. In her new book, A Wilding Year, she recounts the remarkable process of restoring the farms ecosystems, creating a mosaic of opportunities for wildlife at a time when the natural world is in great need of protection. Hannah will give a talk about the rewilding process and show some of her stunning sketches and illustrations that capture the beauty and power of nature across the seasons.Hannah recounts the remarkable and exciting changes, together with the struggles, the farm undergoes as natural processes are allowed to return, creating a mosaic of opportunities for wildlife. The abundance of flora and fauna are captured by Hannahs enchanting sketches and illustrations of skylarks, hobbies, short eared owls, goldcrests, hedgehogs, polecats, hares, meadow brown butterflies, emperor dragonflies, hawk moths, bats, roe deer, woodcock, snipe, marsh orchids and ink cap and beef steak fungi, spectacularly bringing to life the beauty and power of nature in every season. Hannah Dale runs Wrendale Designs, a stationery and gift design company that specialises in endearing illustrations depicting British wildlife, which she founded in 2012. Hannah grew up in rural Lincolnshire which has always inspired her watercolour illustrations. Studying art at school before reading zoology at Cambridge, she went on to work as a stockbroker in London before returning to Lincolnshire to find an outlet for her artistic roots and passion for ecology and conservation. Hannahs previous books include: A Dogs Life, The Farmyard Set, Born to be Wild, The Young Ones and Flying the Nest. There will be an opportunity to buy Hannahs books from Niche Comics Bookshop during opening hours or at the event and have them signed by Hannah.
