Nap Eyes

Nap Eyes

7 May 2025 - 14 May 2025

Nap Eyes’ metamorphic fifth long-player collects a cache of nine fascinating songs recorded over the four years since Snapshot of a Beginner. The Neon Gate reveals classic touchstones (the uneasy interplay of physics and philosophy, perambulatory meditations, self-interrogating soliloquies, apertures of surreality, video games), but also evidence of divergent impulses toward nonlinear abstraction and longform improvisational composition (resulting in their most discursive, deconstructed, and deliquescent songs to date) and narrative and lyric formality (including adaptations of thorny poems by Alexander Pushkin and W. B. Yeats), imparting the sense that Nap Eyes have transmuted, as has their understanding of what a song is, what it can do, where it might go.
Joshua Burnside

Joshua Burnside

22 Jul 2025 - 24 Jul 2025

Northern Irish experimental folk songwriter and producer Joshua Burnside is something of a regional anomaly. With a brooding, powerful sound echoing artists of places afar and time long gone, his enthralling craft defies local comparison in striving towards an aesthetic as much as visual as it is sonic. Balanced with a diverse palette of sounds, Burnside deftly blends alt-folk and elements of the Irish folk song tradition with South American rhythms and Eastern European influences, whilst introducing synthetic and found-sounds, synths loops and crunching beats to create a stormy world that shifts and swirls perspective like a lingering lucid dream.

Adrian Cox Trio

Adrian Cox Trio

15 May 2025 - 16 May 2025

"Makin' Runs," the latest project by internationally acclaimed clarinettist Adrian Cox, delves into alternative ragtime repertoire from the early jazz era, aiming to capture and express the timeless essence of the music. According to legend, "Makin' Runs" is a tune attributed to Buddy Bolden, heard by Bunk Johnson in New Orleans. The phrase symbolises Bolden's vision for inventive improvisations whilst never repeating himself. The trio endeavours to emulate that spirit, crafting tight yet dynamic arrangements that honour the music's original intent, allowing ample room for improvisational fire. The program includes compositions by Duke Ellington, Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton, Barney Bigard and many more. The trio is completed by the incredible talents of Will Sach (double bass) & “Honey” Boulton (guitar) Internationally acclaimed jazz clarinetist Adrian Cox at age 40 is certainly performing at the top of his game. He is one of the leading exponents of the New Orleans clarinet and has a huge wealth of knowledge of the music and the players of the era. His unrivaled feel and virtuosity for the music he plays have led to concerts with the biggest names in jazz including two concerts with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra both in London and New York. Adrian spends the majority of his life on tour around the world and at the time of writing this, has performed in over 30 countries in the past 18 months.
Heather Ferrier Trio

12 Sept 2025 - 2 Oct 2025

With captivating musicianship and a sound that is unapologetically her own, Heather Ferrier is a force to be reckoned with. An “engaging talker and magnetic performer” (NARC magazine), the Stockport born accordionist, clog dancer and composer is changing the perceptions of alt-folk on her own terms. Her latest EP Engine for the Sound creates music that sets the accordion free from its stereotypes, and with an extended line-up of musicians, expresses everything Heather stands for using powerful melodies and jazz-influenced harmony. Bold, passionate and enthralling; the EP has been played on BBC Radio 6 music, and well as being favourably reviewed in local and national publications. When performing, Heather is now joined by guitarist Alasdair Paul (Pons Aelius, Jordan Aikin and Quercus) and drummer Adam Stapleford (Ponyland, Yes! Grasshopper). On stage, the trio perform music that is an explosion of groove and melody that embellishes Heather's signature alt-folk style. The combination of Ferrier, Paul and Stapleford's medley of influences and genre-bending collaborations transcends the limits of contemporary instrumental folk music, employing Heather's distinct compositional style to create a show with both emotive and upbeat moments. As well as her solo work, Heather collaborates in the North East with RŪNN, Jon Doran and the Northern Assembly and Jordan Aikin and Quercus.

Pit Pony

Pit Pony

24 May 2025 - 8 Nov 2025

Fiercely honest, Jackies lyricism portrays an intense duality and a vulnerability that is instantly relatable. Turning inwards to explore notions of motherhood, imposter syndrome and getting older, while simultaneously outwards through commentary on the cost of living, polluted water, the constant sell on social media and the off menu Starbucks coffee obsession. With the band citing the recent influences of Blue Weekend and Skinty Fia alongside the likes of Can and the soundtracks of Ennio Moriconne, mastering engineer Christian Wright (Wolf Alice, Fontaines D.C., Pigs x7) proves the perfect fit with Chris McManus (Blank Studios) heading up recording & production. Sonically, Pit Pony remain loyal to their roots, noting the influence of regional titans Nadine Shah and The Futureheads and with the ENGLISH ACCENT god damn it reminder on PJ Harveys Uh Huh Her in mind, Jackie Purver stays true to her accent. Dead Stars sees Pit Pony deliver an expanded but yet more balanced and personal conception of their craft. Garth Purver explains that the band were aiming for a more rounded and complete record that showcased multiple sides to us but hung together as one piece of work rather than a collection of separate tracks. While Andrew Jones mentions how the band encouraged each other to pull on those strands and incorporate more of our personal taste in the sound.

Greg Surmacz

18 May 2025 - 18 May 2025

Longtime Leeds jazz promoter DJ Lubi continues his monthly residency at Hyde Park Book Club Leeds with a great UK jazz show and album launch on May 18th by jazz/electronic music artist Greg Surmacz. Greg Surmacz is a multi-instrumentalist and producer based in Leeds. His music is influenced by jazz, footwork and the spectrum of UK electronic music. Having gained support from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Jamie Cullum, Tom Ravenscroft, Bandcamp Weekly, Spotify Jazz UK, Moses Boyd, Bandcamp, performing at We Out Here Festival and sharing stages with corto.alto, James Holden, Colin Stetson & Sarathy Korwar, Greg announces his fifth album Building Beyond The Sky’ with the release of energetic debut single Loft Music’. Now playing with a full live band, this first single harnesses a potent creative energy, melding Greg’s signature dubbed out low-end sonics, with heavy, scattered percussive elements, propelled by an urgent synth line and majestic horns. The live band features some heavyweight musicians from the contemporary UK jazz scene : Greg Surmacz - alto saxophone, synth, electronics Sam Vicary (Cinematic Orchestra) - bass synth Matt Davies (Matters Unknown) - drums Tom Sharp - trumpet Rosie Turton - trombone Caitlin LM - baritone saxophone On the track’s inspiration, Greg explains: “Loft Music is about creating energy and forward momentum, building something from nothing. The title was inspired by the 'loft jazz' scene of 1970s New York. Fed up with the restraints of traditional venues, musicians started putting on casual events in loft spaces. At these shows, artists felt free to play whatever they wanted, for however long they wanted. I wanted this record to be direct and powerful, and this track quickly became the focal point of that. It has a sense of urgency from the beginning which only increases over its running time - start high, then get higher. The energy and intensity of footwork has always been a big source of inspiration to me - I tried to imagine a live band playing that music and this is where I ended up.” "A wild ride... really enjoyable." Jamie Cullum (BBC Radio 2) on What We Can Assume "A great album." Gilles Peterson (BBC 6 Music) on What We Can Assume "Thanks to his band Paper Tiger, Leeds resident Greg Surmacz has long been a quiet hero in the interzone between live jazz and the Flying Lotus-adjacent “beat scene.” This year, on his two solo albums, he’s refined his style even further-and on the second installment, he’s achieved a brilliant personal statement. Chiptune bleeps blur into lengthy, lyrical sax lines; jumpy broken beats manage to blend with laid back pastoral chords. It’s incredibly coherent-and very, very lovely." Timelines (Part 2) best electronic music of the month by Bandcamp Daily A frenetic and captivating statement of intent, Loft Music’ demonstrates the incredible progression in Greg’s work and gives a glimpse of what to expect from the full length LP in May 2025.
