Song of the Sea

15 Aug 2025 - 25 Aug 2025

Besides looking charming -- and wondrously beautiful where appropriate -- the English-language version of this enchanting animated feature boasts many strong vocal talents as it tells the story of the last of the selkies, a child named Saoirse. It is shaped from its director's love of Irish legend, folklore, nature and culture, and makes for a beguiling blend of the unfamiliar and culturally specific with the universally appealing.
Wind, Tide & Oar

Wind, Tide & Oar

21 Aug 2025 - 21 Aug 2025

Wind, Tide & Oar is a compelling exploration of engineless sailing, shot on analogue film over three years. The film delves into the experiences of those who travel solely by harnessing the natural elements alone, following a diverse array of traditional boats and uncovering the unique rhythms and motivations of engineless navigation. Journeying through rivers, coastlines, and open seas, spanning the UK, the Netherlands, and France, Wind, Tide & Oar creates a contemplative space, addressing themes of ecology, heritage, traditional skills, and maritime history. Using a 1960s hand-wound camera, Wahl offers a poetic and intimate perspective on a millennia-old craft, upended by the invention of mechanised power. Through the film’s reveries, sailing becomes a means to explore our interaction with and responsibility to the environment. It invites deep reflection on our relationship with nature, our understanding of and commitment to sustainability, and our care for the world around us.

Miserable Dorothy runs away from home but is soon whisked up into a magical land where her adventures teach her that happiness is to be found in her own back yard. Classic stuff indeed, just chockful of great songs, characterisation and memorably garish design. Perhaps marginally less enjoyable for the curmudgeonly element rooting for the Wicked Witch of the West, though.

Savages

6 Aug 2025 - 4 Sept 2025

After Banquise (Ice Floe), his 2006 short film and in the wake of the worldwide success of Ma vie de Courgette (My Life as a Courgette) in 2016, Swiss filmmaker Claude Barras has taken up the subject of deforestation in a very personal ecological fable about an indigenous people who live at the heart of a tropical forest. Barras explains that he was also influenced by the Swiss activist Bruno Manser, who was participated in the defence of the Borneo Forest before disappearing suspiciously. While pointing the finger at the destructive actions of the food industry and the excessive exploitation of raw materials, the film also questions, without ever being didactic, the irresistible attraction that we have for modernity.

Ali Plumb's Untitled Film Quiz Project
Books
Film
Spoken word
If you can answer such ridiculous questions as “How many Pixar films have one-word titles?” (11 up to Elio, 12 if you include ‘Wall-E’) and “Can you name The Fantastic 12?” (Alba, Gruffudd, Evans, Chiklis, Mara, Teller, Jordan, Bell, Kirby, Pascal, Quinn, Moss-Bachrach), obviously, then This quiz is for you! (Not all the questions are that tough, but they are all that silly - and that’s a promise) That’s right, the geeky movie guy with the specs off BBC Radio 1 is BACK BACK BACK with another big screen, in-cinema film quiz, on the road once again to ask you “Can you recognise the film from the out-of-context LEGO minifigure?” and other such absolute nonsense. Expect a worryingly well-edited observation round, a robot-themed picture round and the chance to win the greatest prize of all: the approval of your peers. Also a limited edition Funko Pop, most likely. And probably some awesome posters as well. So if you know your Iron Man from your Man Of Steel, your ‘Mr. Anderson’ from your Wes Anderson, your Disney from your Pixar (okay, Disney•Pixar), join Ali Plumb for an evening of spot prizes, absurd music rounds, perplexing motion picture puzzles and the occasional half-decent joke as he clumsily, amiably, enthusiastically asks you questions that’ll make you go, “Oh I know this one!” or “Argh, I nearly know this one!” You know, in a fun way. Please note that this quiz is the same as those put on across Ali’s September and October dates - head to https://linktr.ee/aliplumb for details After booking, please email [email protected] to confirm your team name and the number of people on your team. £10 per person (Max. 5 people per team). Please Note: membership discounts or concessions are not available on these tickets.
