SLAVIC VOICES LONDON & BRIGHTON CHOIR present music of all styles from the Slavic world: Orthodox chants, beautiful classics by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Schnittke and others, refined XVIII-XIX-centuries Art songs and gritty folklore from the far corners of Siberia to the banks of the Black Sea. The choir's repertoire is sung in Russian, Polish, Slovak, Ukrainian, Czech, Bulgarian, Serbia, Croatian, Macedonian, Belorussian, Bosnian, sometimes even Yiddish or Romanian. Slavic Voices perform in a way that is rarely encountered in the choral world. There is freedom and spontaneity in their approach to folklore as well as precision and deep focus in their classical repertoire, presented with great attention to cultural context, history and style. PAPRIKA is one of the UK's leading Balkan bands whose line-up consists of two accordions, violin, guitar, bass guitar, and percussion. This electrifying group fuses together Eastern European, Balkan, Gypsy and classical music in a whirlwind performance of frenzied virtuosity. Fiery melodies and foot-tapping rhythms are interspersed with lilting laments in high-energy sets from this exciting group. Specialising in bringing rare or lost traditional Balkan music back to life, both the curious listener and the well-versed aficionado are sure to enjoy a host of surprises and fast-paced entertainment.
An Evening with Francesca Segal, author of the Tuga Trilogy
Join us for an exciting evening with Costa Prize winning author Francesca Segal to celebrate the publication of Island Calling, the next novel in the Tuga Trilogy! ‘Absolutely blissful… Get both books in the series: I’ll eat my hat if you don’t love them’ India Knight, Sunday Times On remote Tuga de Oro, vet Charlotte Walker’s caseload of donkeys, cows and ailing lizards has only increased. She still can’t believe the humiliating truth about her father. She probably ought to feel worse than she does. But the islanders have taken Charlotte into their hearts and somehow, between days on the farms and nights with an absorbing (if unsuitable) love interest, she’s content to remain in blissful retreat from her real life in London. Just for now. But real life hits the island with the force of a tropical storm: Charlotte’s mother arrives. Lucinda Compton-Neville knows an identity crisis when she sees one, and has come to haul her daughter back on course: back to England, back to her career, back home where she belongs. Funny, moving, and filled with hope, Island Calling is a joyous novel about mothers and daughters; about holding on and letting go. Francesca Segal is an award-winning writer and journalist. She is the author of two critically acclaimed novels, The Innocents (2012) and The Awkward Age (2017), and a memoir of NICU motherhood, Mother Ship (2019). Her writing has won the 2012 Costa First Novel Award, a Betty Trask Award, and been longlisted for the Women’s Prize. In association with James Allen’s Girls’ School.
