The Angel and The Shadow

3 Oct 2025 - 3 Oct 2025

Reimagining the poetry of Gertrud Kolmar. An immersive musical journey with Professor Julian Marshall. Beginning in 2007 with the startling discovery of the truly remarkable yet tragically little-known poet Gertrud Kolmar, who perished in Auschwitz in 1943, composer Julian Marshall set out on what has become a deeply involving, transformative creative journey. This has, so far, resulted in five works under the collective name The Welten Project the seventeen-poem cycle on which all works are based. In this evenings presentation, Julian will share the story and process of this project and play a specially curated playlist of music. Julian says about the event: 'Towards the end of 2024, I began to feel that an event offering some sort of consolidation and contextualisation of Welten Project works written so far would be worth exploring. I had for some time become aware that from each of the five existing works there could be drawn a kind of distilled, concentrated playlist a carefully curated compilation that could become a new whole work in of itself. This has now become a reality and I very much look forward to sharing this new endeavour with you an evening that will take the form of an immersive listener experience prefaced by a short introductory talk and completed with a Q&A session.' Julian is composer and a professor at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP) in London, England. You will hear recorded performances from: James Gilchrist Melanie Pappenheim Miranda Ostler Avigal Tlalim Louisa Clein Sophie Harris Lucy Railton Raj Bhaumik Philharmonia Orchestra cellos (sextet) The Rupa Ensemble Schoolhouse 6 Ensemble conducted by Howard Moody Engineering and mixing by Philip Bagenal and Jonas Persson.
Talk: Simon Barnes

Talk: Simon Barnes

4 Oct 2025 - 4 Oct 2025

Author and Journalist Simon Barnes talks about his most recent book 'Spring Is The Only Season' and some of the ideas involved love, religion and poetry as well as butterflies, birdsong and climate. 'Spring is not so much a season as the meaning of life at least it is to all of us who live in the seasonal lands. I have walked in rainforest, in desert and in the African savannah and that has taught me that there is no greater miracle on earth than the coming of spring. Spring can be found in birdsong, in the awaking butterflies and in the quickening of the land as the returning light and warmth sparks the growth of plants. Spring can also be found in great festivals of religion, ancient custom and sport. Spring is traditionally the time of love. Spring has been made still more vivid by the greatest artists that ever lived. And me, I intend to celebrate every possible aspect of the spring, for, after all, hope springs eternal in the human breast.'
Aldeburgh Summer Theatre - See How They Run, by Philip King
See How They Run, by Philip King Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall 21st July to 26th July 2025 The ultimate English Farce, produced during the height of WWII. In an idyllic English village, the resident busy-body is convinced that the ex-actress vicars wife is having an affair. Classic mistaken-identity mayhem follows, with a handsome visiting actor, a baffled Bishop, a clueless locum priest, an escapee German POW, banging doors, missing trousers, and a madcap chase with almost everyone claiming to be the real vicar. On the West End opening night, three German flying bombs exploded nearby. No-one budged until the final curtain. 1940s Brits really did Keep Calm and Carry On Laughing! Aldeburgh Summer Theatre - GASLIGHT, by Patrick Hamilton
GASLIGHT, by Patrick Hamilton Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall 28th July to 9th August 2025 The original, classic Psychological Thriller, was written in 1938, but set in dark and dangerous, foggy London, before electric lighting. The title, and its derivative, gaslighting has of course become part of our modern lexicon. Hamilton's original play is indeed a dark tale of a marriage based on deceit and trickery, and features a husband trying to drive his already fragile wife insane. But, as we learn his hidden motive, an even more terrifying murder-mystery is revealed, with a final twist that shows Hamiltons mastery of the genre. A West-End hit, and still one of the longest-running Broadway plays. Running time approximately 2hrs with interval. Tickets 16 or 22 depending on location. Evenings Monday to Saturday 7:30pm and Matinees 4pm on Thursdays and Saturdays. (For further information, disabled access, or group bookings please call 01728 343344.) We look forward to welcoming you. Also at Southwold Arts Centre Wednesday 13th to Saturday 16th August.
Aldeburgh Summer Theatre - Things We Do For Love, by Alan Ayckbourn
Things We Do For Love, by Alan Ayckbourn Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall Monday 11th to Saturday 16th August 2025 Comic, cruel, classic by Ayckbourn at his mid-period best, centring on the love triangle between two women and one man - although the unrequited, obsessive affection of the downstairs lodger possibly makes it a love square! In a play that includes passion, comedy, and some violence, Ayckbourn handles a potentially tragic theme in a black romantic comedy that will jar both your funny bone and your heart. This memorably bruising comedy is a Private Lives for the nineties." (The Guardian). With a unique, new set design personally approved by the author. Also at Southwold Arts Centre Wednesday 20th to Saturday 30th August. (Not Sundays, Mondays or Tuesdays).
Aldeburgh Summer Theatre - While The Sun Shines, by Terence Rattigan
While The Sun Shines by Terence Rattigan Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall Tuesday 19th to Saturday 30th August 2025 (No show on Monday 18th due to Aldeburgh Carnival) Our closing tribute to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. On his wedding-eve, young Earl Harpenden has put up a drunken American soldier he met the night before. When Harpendens fiance turns up, the lonely American flirts outrageously, thinking she is Harpendens ex, West-End doyen, Mabel Crum. This sparkling Romcom with the laughs of a perfect Farce shows both the authors dazzling stage-craft and his belief that, even in the darkest of times, there is still love, hope and laughter. A masterpiece outstanding in every way (The Times) Running time approximately 2hrs with interval. Tickets 16 or 22 depending on location. Evenings Monday to Saturday 7:30pm and Matinees 4pm on Thursdays and Saturdays. (For further information, disabled access, or group bookings please call 01728 343344.) Common Ground presents The Tales Our Mother Told!
At their mother's wake, two brothers start to piece together a sense of who she was from the stories she told them as children, and as adults. Some were hilarious, some terrifying and some downright baffling. Did they help the brothers in their life path, or did they make the forest darker and the way less clear? Was their mother to be found in her yarns, like the old woman spinning in her gingerbread cottage? Or were they a smokescreen, an enchanted mist that took you to strange realms and left you thrilled but faintly bewildered? A play with music in 2 acts by Pat Whymark.

The Finn Collinson Band

29 Nov 2025 - 29 Nov 2025

Expect initial touches of baroque fusing with modern day folk (FATEA) as The Finn Collinson Band returns to the stage in 2025. Joined by two of English folks most in-demand musicians, Evan Carson (bodhran, percussion) and Archie Churchill-Moss (guitar, accordion), Finn combines a fundamentally folk approach with elements of early music to sculpt a distinctive and pioneering sound. Traditional dance tunes meet historical melodies, shaken up in striking new arrangements and brought up to date with Finns compositions and trademark recorder style. Together they create a captivating and wonderfully varied live show, with a respectful eye on the past but a firm grounding in the present. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bl4pp4Vruag I strongly recommend you take every opportunity to catch them live KLOF (Folk Radio) Finn is regarded as a leading exponent of the recorder, and deservedly so. Hearing it played as well as it is here, makes me wonder why its not heard more in folk music.
