National Library of Scotland's moving image archive is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Drop in and join us in celebrating the Doors Open Day theme of 'Glasgow goes out' by discovering more about the cinemas that made us, like the ABC 1 on Sauchiehall Street and the Cosmo (now the GFT). Drop in anytime during our opening hours on Wednesday 16th - Saturday 19th September. What are your favourite memories of going to the pictures? Be reminded with archive photo displays of old Glasgow cinemas. Visit our pop-up display 'Going to the Pictures' about Scotland's impact on the big screen which includes banners detailing the golden era of cinema and local film. Explore handling kits filled with cinema tickets, film strips, and zoetropes. You can also watch films from the archive in our open-access centre in Kelvin Hall.

Celebrate 50 years of the National Library of Scotland's film archive with a free 'behind the scenes' tour of Scotland's film and sound collections. Based in the iconic Kelvin Hall, this is a rare opportunity to see how technicians and curators work behind the scenes to preserve and digitise film and sound material from fragile formats. Staff will be on hand to answer any questions and guide you through the storage and care of this unique collection. Tours will last an hour, and run at: 10:30am 12 noon Please note: spaces are limited to 10 people per tour. Tours will be available on the day on a first come, first served basis. This is due to limited capacity and low attendance on previous occasions. After your tour you can browse thousands of films, and explore our digital collections. If you have any access requirements, please contact us in advance of your visit.

Join the National Library of Scotland at Kelvin Hall for a session of cinema related craft. Suitable for all ages, this workshop celebrates the days of children's cinema clubs, where your ticket could be paid by trading in your empty jeely jars! You will have the chance to make your own cinema club badge, decorate your own jeely jar, alongside other cinema related activities. A range of materials and art supplies will be provided. All you need to bring is some inspiration and imagination. The workshop is free and run on a drop-in basis, first come first served. There will be two drop-in sessions: Session one from 10:30 to 12pm Session two from 2pm to 3:30pm This event is part of the Glasgow Doors Open Day programme.

We need your help! Glasgow Museums' Intercultural Youth Group (ICY) are looking to develop a kit of objects for our Open Museum that specifically represents African and Caribbean histories and communities in the city of Glasgow, highlighting migration and community building from 1900 onwards. Do you have any objects that you think would fit the theme and would be happy to part with? Or any ideas that could inform the kit? Then join us for an informal meeting on Monday 21st September from 6-8pm at Kelvin Hall (Seminar Room 1). Please feel free to drop by at any time, for as little or as much time as you would like. There will be an opportunity to see other examples of Open Museum Handling Kits, take a look around some of the social history collection in the stores at Kelvin Hall, and chat about our plans for the project. The ICY is a group of young adults from Global Majority backgrounds who have been working with the museum service over the past 2 years to share ideas, advise on projects and produce artwork. The Open Museum is Glasgow Museums' outreach service which takes objects from the museum collections out to communities across the city. This is done by loaning out handling kits, which feature objects that are part of the museum collection and are linked to a certain theme. We are specifically on the lookout for objects that people might be willing to donate to the kit. These objects would become part of Glasgow Museums permanent collection. ICY group members working on the project have suggested some of the following things: Posters / Leaflets for Afro-Caribbean events or traditional festivals Leaflets for events or traditional festivals Adverts for services (hair salons etc) Food wrappers (imported foods etc) Fashion Books representing Black Diasporic writers in Scotland (Jackie Kay, Maud Saulter) DVDs/Videos We are really open to any form of collaboration as historically these histories haven't been represented in the collection.
