Esther Manito: Slagbomb

Esther Manito: Slagbomb

31 Jan 2026 - 27 Feb 2026

Esther’s new show ‘Slagbomb’ takes a nosedive into the awkward sandwich years of life. The phase when youthful freedom gives way to the reality of adult responsibilities. It’s a time when one finds oneself juggling everything from prostate checks to hosing faeces off the garden decking, whilst clad in questionable footwear like crocs. Growing up, Esther imagined she would fulfil all the expectations of a lady, poised and dignified, but looking around she realises that just hasn't happened. Esther's life seems to be a magnet for embarrassing moments and endless cockups. No matter how hard she tries to project sophistication, she often ends up highlighting her unrefined side. Now she wants to embrace her lack of dignity - whether it’s her less-than-graceful posture, cringeworthy encounters with shady drug dealers, or the painful realities of waxing gone wrong. At its core, Esther’s show is an exploration of the challenges and hilarities of navigating the sandwich years, and an invitation to the audience to feel good about the madness in their own lives. After all, she has a Lebanese father dealing with war, a mother dealing with cancer, two kids (who seem to have permanently lost their PE kit), a husband who just wanted some birthday nooky, and a sudden loss of hearing. It’s all part of the messy, chaotic, and often hilarious journey of a right Slagbomb.

Janina Ramirez - 'Legenda' In Conversation
From the bestselling author of FEMINA, a brilliant reappraisal of the medieval women whose lives have been exploited over centuries for political, nation-building ends. In LEGENDA, bestselling historian Professor Janina Ramirez peels back the layers of time to reveal how the identities of women have been co-opted by those intent on crafting national identities. Their names are well-known, and summaries of their achievements have been recited in classrooms for decades, but medieval women like Joan of Arc, Lady Godiva and Isabella of Castile have been misrepresented, their stories twisted and weaponised. Meanwhile, ground-breaking 18th and 19th-century women who blazed a trail through revolutionary Europe have been forgotten, their legacies too easily dismissed or ignored. Questioning established narratives and searching for the real women behind the legends, join Janina Ramirez in conversation as she interrogates what defines a nation and who gets to build it, shining a light on how history is so often hijacked to serve the ideological and political interests of the present. Professor Janina Ramirez is a best-selling author, presenter, lecturer and researcher. She is Director of Studies for History of Art at Harris Manchester College, University of Oxford, and Visiting Professor in Medieval Studies at the University of Lincoln. She has published widely on medieval history, art and literature, has written both fiction and non-fiction for adults and younger readers, and has taught and researched across a broad chronological sweep, covering everything from the sculptures of antiquity to post-modern architecture. She has also written and presented documentaries across the world for over 15 years, including 'Raiders of the Lost Past,' 'The Private Lives of Kings,' and 'Art Lovers Guide'. She is Lifelong President of Gloucester History Festival, Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, Royal Society of Arts, Universities of York and Gloucestershire and City Lit. This event will feature an interview, audience Q&A and book signing.

Ron Sexsmith

Ron Sexsmith

22 Feb 2026 - 1 Mar 2026

Ron Sexsmith is a three time, Juno award winning singer songwriter from St Catharines Ontario. Born in 1964, Ron was drawn to music from an early age by the melodic songs of the era, which he heard on the radio and by his Mom's record collection. His earliest musical heroes were Buddy Holly and Elton John. With producer Mitchell Froom, Sexsmith released his self-titled label debut album in 1995. The melancholic tone and sparse acoustic arrangements of the album were met with disapproval from Interscope. However an enthusiastic endorsement from Elvis Costello drew media attention and the album was declared a critical success. In his Sept 7, 1995 review for Rolling Stone, Bud Scoppa wrote: He just may be the most fluent balladeer to come along since Tim Hardin or Harry Nilsson. Sexsmith's songwriting style evolved into a unique and timeless blend of classic pop, contemporary folk, and roots-rock idioms. He has built a steadfast reputation with critics and with some of his own songwriting hero's (Elton John, Ray Davies, John Prine, Gordon Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen and Paul McCartney) for his characteristically honest, sensitive, and enduring approach to the songwriting craft. Ron has released albums on a consistent basis since 1995 and has recorded with noted producers Mitchell Froom, Daniel Lanois, Steve Earle, Jim Scott, Don Kerr, Brad Jones, Bob Rock, and Martin Terefe. Ron completed work on a brand new album which is scheduled to be released in early 2023 and is in keeping with his reputation for catchy but graceful melodies, drawing on love, and the trials of everyday life.

This is a love letter to the sticky floors that we have danced on for all these years. Jenny Foulds (she/her) is a queer neurodiverse performance poet, writer and actress from Scotland. Jenny was the 2021 Scottish Poetry Slam Champion and was a World Slam Championships finalist in 2022, as well as being host and curator of the Brighton-based Spoken Word night Rebel Soapbox. She has had feature and headline gigs at nights across the UK including Hammer & Tongue, Loud Poets, Grooveverse, Stanza Poetry Festival, and Edinburgh Fringe. As an actress, she was a series regular in Two Thousand Acres of Sky (BBC) and appeared in various TV and film roles including Rebus, Mandancin’, Taggart and The Debt Collector. She founded the street art blog Happy Graffiti, which later became a book published by Octopus Books (a Hachette imprint) in 2013. Life Learnings of a Nonsensical Human is her first solo show.

LYR

LYR

16 Apr 2026 - 7 May 2026

LYR is author and current British poet laureate Simon Armitage, singer-songwriter Richard Walters, and multi-instrumentalist/producer Patrick Pearson. LYR’s story stretches back to 2009 when Walters, an admirer of Armitage’s extensive body of written work, approached the poet’s publisher about the possibility of collaboration. The result was Walters setting Armitage’s poetry to music in 2011. Realising that their two-part formula had potential to grow, Walters approached musical acquaintance, Pearson, and his joining provided the impetus to create the genre-splicing ‘supergroup’. The three-piece went on to create two critically acclaimed albums, Call In The Crash Team and The Ultraviolet Age. Coming together with focused, blended labour to instrumentalise Armitage’s words and vocal delivery, opposing the tag of ‘spoken word project’ or similar, the band ruminates instead on what aural breakthroughs could only be possible with a non-singing vocalist, gifted singer-songwriter and alchemistic musician-producer. LYR are now a firmly established part of the contemporary music scene, with regular radio airplay across the networks and over five million streams to their name. They have appeared at many major festivals including Green Man and Blu Dot, and sold out events across the UK. Please note that reserved seating is in place for this concert. Tickets for this event include a £1 venue restoration levy, included in the ticket price. This fee supports building investment at the Grade II-listed Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.

Mamas Gun In Concert Plus Support

Mamas Gun In Concert Plus Support

25 Mar 2026 - 25 Mar 2026

Mamas Gun is a 5-piece band from the UK. Their sound is one that straddles so-called blue eyed soul and the best of soul in the black music tradition. With soul music being the common ground between the 5 members, echoes of artists such as Marvin Gaye, Bobby Caldwell, Bill Withers, Lewis Taylor and Sly Stone can be heard weaving in between the sonic threads of their frequently uplifting and heart rending music. Drummer Chris Boot’s softly-softly but always groovy presence on the drums is perfectly complimented by the warm bouncy James Jamerson-esque bass guitar stylings of Cameron Dawson. Together their sound is intimate, highly musical and questing.  Guitarist Terry Lewis’ deft touch on the guitar adds to the authenticity of the sound. Think percussive Motown style “chanks”, shimmering spring reverb, Cornell Dupree’s chordal fluency and searing Isley Brothers style lead sounds. Dave Oliver’s profound control and connection with keyboard instruments sees him at home with everything from serene jazz piano and crunchy Wurlitzer textures to roaring gospel Hammond and warm vocal-esque synth lines. Sitting atop is the yearning honeyed voice of Andy Platts. Surprisingly reluctant to identify as a singer, his abilities nevertheless able to stir deep emotional reactions from listeners. Names like Marvin Gaye and Daryl Hall are often mentioned but Platts’ really has a unique sound all of his own. Mamas Gun was originally formed by Platts in 2007, and who is also largely responsible for the groups songwriting output.  Running parallel he has enjoyed an illustrious side career as a songwriter has penned hits for Take That, James Morrison and various high profile stars in South Korea and Japan, among many others. Since 2015 he has also been one half of yacht rock duo Young Gun Silver Fox alongside cult musician and producer Shawn Lee, cultivating a major presence in Europe and the United States.  Mamas Gun have issued six albums to date, the latest DIG! featuring a line up completed by keyboardist Dave Oliver, known for being MD for Lisa Stansfield and guitarist Terry Lewis, a well regarded sideman whose credits include Leon Ware, The Impressions and Rumer, both there from Mamas Gun’s inception; bassist Cameron Dawson, known for playing bass for Cinematic Orchestra, Puma Blue and Joy Crookes, who joined for 2014’s third album Cheap Hotel and Chris Boot, whose playing credits include Alice Russell, Nilufer Yanya and Lucy Rose, the group’s drummer since 2018’s fourth album Golden Days.
