The List

Leeds Grand Theatre

The Grand Theatre & Opera House is a Leeds institution. Opening in 1878, it was originally intended as an upmarket rebuke to the scuzzy music halls that then dominated Leeds night life, to the point where only those with the best seats were allowed to come in through the main entrance. The music halls have gone and the Grand Theatre has long since democratised itself, providing a classy venue for the people of Leeds to see major touring shows, opera, musicals, dance, stand-up comedy and classical concerts. The splendid Victorian building is Grade II listed but in 2005-6 it went through a major refurbishment and now has improved technical facilities and a new performance space, the Howard Assembly Room. It's also the home of Opera North, and Northern Ballet are frequent guests in the building.

David Olusoga: A Gun Through Time

David Olusoga: A Gun Through Time

19 Apr 2026 - 19 Apr 2026

Have you ever considered how a single weapon could change the course of history? What stories lie behind the guns that shaped empires, wars, and even criminal underworlds? How did these firearms influence not just battles, but entire societies? Known for his acclaimed documentaries Black and British: A Forgotten History and A House Through Time, as well has his appearance on Celebrity Traitors, David Olusoga offers remarkable storytelling in this powerful, unexpected and enlightening social narrative. Join David as he uncovers the story of four firearms that changed the world and the lives of our ancestors. The Thompson sub-machine gun was the wonder weapon that was supposed to end to the slaughter of the First World War. But in the hands of the gangsters of Prohibition-era America it became the infamous ‘Tommy Gun’. The Maxim gun enabled Europeans to conquer Africa in the 1890s, but 20 years later it became one of the biggest killers in European history when deployed on the Western Front. It is still being used to considerable effect on the battlefields of Ukraine. The Brown Bess flintlock musket, standard issue to the British Army from the early 18th to mid-19th century, was famously used in conflicts from the American War of Independence to Waterloo, symbolising the height of British imperial military power. The Lee Enfield rifle was woven into the lives of two generations of our ancestors. With 17 million of them produced it was the weapon the British Army took to war in 1914 and 1939. See these legendary firearms up close on stage and delve into their mind-bending hidden social histories. You’ll also have the chance ask David your own questions about any historical topic.

Live comedy is straight up amazing because people gather to watch it in a spectacular setting rather than ogling an evil phone screen in some horrid grey dank little corner. Edinburgh Comedy Award winner, Taskmaster champion & surrealist genius Sam Campbell is an Australian comedian who shot to international acclaim after winning the Barry Award for Most Outstanding Show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival (2018) and the Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Show (2022). He conquered Channel 4’s Taskmaster Series 16 in 2023 and has appeared on Would I Lie to You?, Never Mind The Buzzcocks, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, Guessable, The Russell Howard Hour, Live at the Moth Club, Friday Night Live, Bloods, Fisk, QI and various other comedy panel and sketch shows.
