Ocean Colour Scene

Ocean Colour Scene

30 May 2025 - 30 Aug 2025

Formed in Birmingham in 1989, OCS spent six years fine-tuning their sound before lighting up the Britpop party with three Top 5 albums; 1996’s ‘Moseley Shoals’, 1997’s ‘Marchin’ Already’ and 1999’s ‘One From The Modern’. The band has also achieved seventeen Top 40 singles, including a staggering run of nine successive Top 20 singles and a mantelpiece full of awards. As with all the best groups, behind the swagger and style were great songs, with words and melodies that found their way into the public’s hearts. Honing their craft in the spirit of the soul, folk and blues greats who inspired them, Ocean Colour Scene’s celebrated live shows have cemented the relationship between the band and their fiercely loyal fanbase, with each concert serving as a communal outpouring of hope and joy, boasting the most life-affirming singalongs you’re likely to hear anywhere.
The Christians

The Christians

17 May 2025 - 28 Aug 2025

Renowned for an endless string of soulful yet socially aware hits 'Forgotten Town', 'Ideal World', 'Born Again', 'Harvest for the World', 'What’s in a Word', 'Hooverville', 'Words', 'Father', 'The Bottle' and many more The Christians enjoyed huge acclaim in the late 80s and early 90s both in the UK and Europe and often confused people with their band name (in fact just the brothers’ surname with absolutely no religious connotation!) Still headed by enigmatic lead singer Garry Christian (who very much deserves The Daily Mirror’s description of him as having ‘one of the finest voices in pop’) who has only gained in vocal stature (and wit) over the years!
Cast

Cast

13 Jun 2025 - 5 Dec 2025

Originally formed in 1992 from the ashes of The La’s and Shack, Cast released four albums and had ten top 10 singles before disbanding in 2001. As one of the most traditional guitar bands to emerge during the Brit-pop era of the mid-'90s, Cast have carved out a sound that was heavily indebted to the British Invasion of the early '60s, yet it was infused with a mystical, pseudo-hippie lyrical sensibility, which lead singer John Power expanded upon in all of his interviews. What really made Cast into a success was Power's gift for simple, classic pop hooks, as demonstrated on the hit singles "Fine Time," "Alright," and "Walkaway." Cast became a very, very popular band within Britain following the success of Oasis and Blur. Labelled ‘The Who of the 90’s’, Noel Gallagher once described watching Cast play live as “a religious experience.”

Creative Methods Workshop: The Video Essay
The Centre for Health, Arts, Society and Environment (CHASE), Centre for Culture and Everyday Life and the Department of Languages, Cultures and Film invite you to participate in a Creative Methods Workshop: The Video Essay Format: Lecture, followed by Workshop (Lunch Provided) Presenter/Facilitator: Dr. Alan O Leary, Aarhus University, Denmark Overview In an online world dominated by the audiovisual, video essay-making is rapidly becoming a core academic skill for research and analysis, across disciplines. (Lee 2021; OLeary 2023). This workshop will focus on interests across disciplines in humanities, social sciences, public health and environmental research interested in creative methodologies and their capacity to interrogate different kinds of data and tackle complex challenges. It will encourage participants to explore the specific affordances of the Video Essay, considering how the specific interactions between images, sound and text alter our traditional understanding of knowledge production. This (relatively) new form of research also requires new approaches to evaluation, critical engagement and archiving as well as the understanding of sites and platforms for dissemination and digital publishing. The workshop will provide a means to critically explore the formal and methodological parameters of the video essay: how is it defined? In what ways is it different from the essay film? (Is it different?) How does it sit alongside other visual methods? What does the video essay offer fields such as visual anthropology/sociology? How can it be productively utilised as a form of ethnographic or autoethnographic and critically-reflexive knowledge production?
Integrating pangenomics and metagenomics: Understanding feedbacks between HGT & microbiome dynamics
Integrating pangenomics and metagenomics: Understanding feedbacks between horizontal gene transfer and microbiome dynamics Staff and students of the University of Liverpool and University of Manchester are invited to this symposium, which will examine two main questions: 1. What is the Impact of pangenome dynamics on the microbiome? Our focus here is on how movement of genes and mobile genetic elements between taxa can influence overall microbiome dynamics 2. How does microbiome context shape pangenome evolution? Here we examine the impact of community diversity and microbe-microbe interaction on processes of horizontral gene transfer. We welcome offers to present a 15 minute talk or poster. If you would like to do so, please provide a title and brief abstract upon registration. We aim to include a diversity of study systems and organisms - welcoming work on environmental microbiomes as well as host-associated microbiomes in different compartments (e.g. lung, skin, gut, rhizosphere, leaf) and different host taxa (e.g. human, animal, plant). We are also keen to represent organismal and mobile genetic element diversity, encompassing both prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbes. As always, we particularly value early career researcher contributions. We are grateful to the Liverpool Microbiome Innovation Centre for funding this symposium. Organisers: Greg Hurst (Liverpool) Mike Brockhurst (Manchester)
