Although Liverpool has one of the biggest Catholic populations of any city in the UK, it took over 100 years for them to get a proper cathedral; none of the three earlier designs, by architects as eminent as Pugin and Lutyens, were completed. Frederick Gibberd's 1967 Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King is a much-loved piece of bold 60s modernism, although the design was so faulty (the roof leaked and the mosaic tiles tended to fall off) that the church sued and got an out-of-court settlement. The Crypt is the only part of Edwin Lutyens' 1933 design that reached completion, and is notable for being the venue of Liverpool's annual Beer Festival. The nearest rail station is Lime Street.
