The List

Lyceum Theatre

There's been a theatre on the site since 1812, but the Lyceum's long career hasn't been without bumps. From 1871 to 1902 it was Henry Irving's preferred venue for Shakespeare, usually co-starring Helen Terry, but in 1939 it was closed. It spent some years as a ballroom and music venue -- Bob Marley & the Wailers played a famous gig in 1975 -- but in 1986 it closed again for ten years. In 1996 it was converted back into a venue for musicals, and in 1999 the investment paid off with the UK premiere of The Lion King, which is still going strong. The nearest Tube stations are Covent Garden (Piccadilly) and Temple (District / Circle), and the nearest surface rail is Charing Cross.

The Lion King

2 Jul 2025 - 29 Mar 2026

The stunning simplicity of The Lion King is the work of a team of designers who draw on diverse cultural influences to recreate the rich colours and vast expanses of the African savanna in this daring and inspiring reinvention of one of the most successful animated films of all time. The Lion King is recommended for a general audience. As an advisory to adults who might bring young people, Disney recommends The Lion King for ages 6 and up.
