20 years in stand-up for the Taskmaster cheeky texts icon, multi-award winner, YouTube cult figure, Radio 4 favourite and recently ‘Baby Reindeer’ actor: Watson returns after seasons at the Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Edinburgh comedy festivals. A recent encounter with a stranger caused Mark to spend some time pondering the uncertain future facing humanity. He explores this – along with equally pressing matters like the worst word he has ever said in public, the current state of the UK sausage industry, and much more – in a typically frantic and fun-packed new show.

Collage SC869 Discover the art of collage, the process of creating powerful new art images from existing materials. This course is taught by Hazel Pitt, a leading collage artist, graphic designer and member of Birmingham Collage Collective. What will you learn on this course? Collage is rooted in Art history, from the Cubist papier colles of Picasso and Braque, to the powerful and political work of Dada artist Hannah Hoch and Pop Artist Richard Hamilton. Collage can be an immediate art form but the success of the finished piece relies upon the artists choice of imagery, and the positioning. It is a sustainable art practice, re-using old images from printed photographs and magazines create new art works. The process of producing collage by hand can be very therapeutic, providing an immediate, raw aesthetic to the finished artwork. This course will cover: The art history of collage within contemporary context Using scale, proportion and geometry to maximise visual impact Using colour, texture and typography in your designs Use and refine craft skills in the creation of collage designs by hand The tutor will provide a variety of magazines and image rich books, giving you the opportunity to create a range of alternative visual outcomes. Different design formats will also be touched upon during the course. The class includes group tuition, handouts, and one-to-one support from the tutor. Guidance will be tailored to your level of experience to help you achieve your own personal aims. The tutor will encourage an atmosphere of communication and co-operation through interactions with others in the class. There will be time to view, reflect and constructively critique your own work and that of the other students in the class, all in a friendly and relaxed environment. The overall aim of the course is to help learners develop their own original style of producing art via the medium of collage. Exposure II: Digital Photography (DM02 Summer)
Exposure 2: Digital Photography DM02 An ideal follow on from ‘Exposure 1’, this course will deepen your understanding of your camera and teach you to take better photographs in a range of genres. What will you learn on this course? This is a fun and friendly course which is an ideal follow on from ‘Exposure 1. This course provides an opportunity for you to unleash your creativity, have fun with your camera, and start creating pictures you want to keep, share, and maybe even print! You will be encouraged to continue or start a portfolio of your best shots or create a new body of work. You will learn how to take better landscape, travel, street photography and portrait images, and discover how to achieve special affects in camera rather than through post production in Photoshop. During this course, you will also have the opportunity to experience fine art nude photography and photograph a life model within a studio setting. You will also gain a deeper understanding of the various rules of composition. Throughout the course, you will be encouraged to think creatively and to use your camera as a tool for expression. Using our desktop Apple MAC computers, you will also learn file management techniques and post production using Photoshop. During this course, you will also have the opportunity to experience fine art photography and photograph a life model within a studio setting. Each will, participants will be set a short weekly assignment to practice what they have learned that week. It is important to the success of the course that you have the time and motivation to complete the weekly assignments and to work on your own portfolio. An active element of each week is the downloading, discussing, and reviewing of each other’s images shot in response to the weekly challenge. The tutor encourages knowledge sharing and participation from all members of the group, creating a relaxed learning environment where you can freely ask questions. Some 1 to 1 support may be provided as required. Independent research, learning, and completion of practical weekly photography assignments between classes are encouraged. On completion of this course, you will have developed a critical eye and greater ability to select and proof your images. You will have a deeper understanding of the genres in photography and an improved confidence in the exploration of your camera. You should feel confident to be creative with your camera and to explore your own capabilities further. It is ideally suited for people with DSLR, Bridge, Compact System Cameras, Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Cameras, or a compact camera for enthusiasts that has manual settings. Have you always wanted to write about your own life or someone else’s? Or are you already having a go and need some guidance? If so, then this is the course for you! What will you learn on this course? This six-week course is designed to build your confidence and help improve your creative writing skills, by drawing inspiration from life experiences, stories, and published text. The course will bring fun into creative writing and provide techniques for how to start a story and how to build, develop and improve your writing skills. You will review published texts in the life writing genre and, feeling inspired, will start creating your own writing. The course will use memory exercises and published texts to inspire writing, including group work and group discussions. The tutor’s approach is focused on building your confidence and finding enjoyment and pleasure in writing, embracing the drafting process. By the end of the course, you will acquire the skills to jump-start your own creative writing. Who is this course for? This course is suitable for adults aged 18+ years. Create a Kantha stitched iPad cover or similar item using recycled saris with surface decoration inspired by the rich colours and designs from India. What will you learn on this course? Inspired by MAC’s current exhibition the Offbeat Sari (INSERT INFO) give recycled fabrics a new purpose, while expanding your textile techniques. Taking inspiration from traditional paisley designs and the good luck door hanging known as a Toran (similar to bunting), learners will print, decorate and stitch a simple bag to hold an iPad or a similar item. Adorned with Indian elephants, shisha mirrors, tassels and cords learners will create their own unique piece inspired by India. You’ll learn new techniques including: • Printing • Machine and hand stitching • Attaching shisha mirrors • Handmade machine cords • Adding tassels. You will aim to have a completed item by the end of the workshop. Who is this course for? This one-day course is suitable for adults aged 18+ years and is open to beginners and improvers. You do not need any previous experience of textile making as full instruction and guidance is given. Introduction to Ceramics 2 days (ASC55)
Always wanted to try ceramics? During this 2-day course you will learn hand building techniques including traditional coiling and slab building and produce a ceramic vessel, garden planter or sculpture. What will you learn on this course? Develop your skills through the use of traditional coiling or slab building techniques, to produce a ceramic vessel, garden planter or sculpture. You will have the opportunity to explore surface decoration through in-relief modelling, pattern and texture whilst working towards your finished outcome. Your own designs and ideas will be encouraged to enable you to find your personal working style. You will be guided through a number of tutor-led demonstrations and set tasks which will introduce particular tips and techniques. The course will cover the following skills and techniques: • how to successfully develop 2d designs into 3d objects • construction techniques • understanding of the materials and different stages of making • options for design, building, and quality of finish • in-relief modelling, imprinted texture and slip decoration Discuss ideas and intentions with the group and receive support in developing your own independent artistic style. The tutor will develop a guided programme of study with the group providing demonstrations and one-to-one support as required. You are encouraged to develop your own ideas, perhaps through sketched designs, and develop your own working style. Our fully equipped studio will give you access to various stoneware clays, glazes, all necessary tools and the firing kiln. On completion of this course you will have broadened your ceramics skills and learned new techniques for the realisation of your own design. Please note that your work will need time to dry out and be fired twice in MAC’s kilns. Your work will be ready for collection up to 4 weeks after the date of your last workshop. Learn how to sew a stunning handmade dress to wear this summer in this 2-day course. What will you learn on this course? During the course participants will: • Learn how to sew and adjust a dress from a commercial pattern • Understand the fittings techniques used in sewing your own clothes. • Continue to develop knowledge, precision and accuracy in sewing. A full health and safety briefing and hand-outs will be given at the beginning of the workshop. The tutor will give a small introduction about the class content and will give a step by step demonstration. After each step is demonstrated, the attendees are encouraged to sew that individual step alone. However, those who require additional support will be assisted by the tutor as and when questions or problem arise. Support will then be given as and when the attendee needs it. At the end of the course, you will have developed skills to make your own summer dress from a pattern. Who is this course for? This two-day course is suitable for adults aged 18+ years. We suggest that participants have some previous sewing skills, and is open to beginners and improvers. At the heart of MAC is a focus on accessibility and inclusion. Participants will need to be able to control a sewing machine, use pins, scissors and an iron. Dexterity in hands essential. If you own a sewing machine and prefer to use it you can have it PAT tested for a cost of £5 and bring it in to use during class. Please let us know in advance of the class so we can book with the technicians. Make and decorate a simple book and cloth bag to keep it in, inspired by the rich colours and designs from India. What will you learn on this course? Inspired by MAC’s current exhibition the Offbeat Sari (INSERT INFO) create two items in this one-day workshop. Using traditional carved wooden blocks brought back from Jaipur, learners will experiment printing on card, paper and fabric. Using your beautiful samples, you will learn simple stitched notebook making techniques. In the afternoon we will machine stitch a matching simple cloth bag to keep your book in, all adorned with hand stitched Indian Kantha stitch. You’ll learn new techniques including: • Block printing • Bookmaking • Machine and hand stitching • Indian Kantha stich You will aim to have two completed items by the end of the workshop. Who is this course for? This one-day course is suitable for adults aged 18+ years and is open to beginners and improvers. Song Fishing - A Songwriting Workshop (ASC115)
Focus on generating new material through creative, playful activities known as ‘song fishing’ on this one-day short course. What will you learn on this course? Dan Whitehouse’s ’Song Fishing' workshop is an immersive experience - all about generating raw material, writing new songs, casting our net wide for fresh ideas, titles, compelling first lines and song sketches. Working by ear, and improvisation, not music theory based, the method has been cited as a remedy for writer’s block by previous workshop attendees. Dan will be encouraging you to remove the magnifying glass and allow yourself to step out of your own way and engage with a series of games, designed to connect with your inner child and focus on the activities of writing as a playful experience, a kind of performance in itself. During this course you will explore various styles of Indian pottery as a basis for you own designs, inspired by the use decorative designs, terracotta sculpture and more contemporary work. What will you learn on this course? Traditional Indian pottery has developed over thousands of years, encompassing both functional and sculptural forms and covers a huge geographical range. From the oldest, most traditional form of terracotta pottery to the vivid colour of Blue Pottery from Jaipur there’s an enormous range to take inspiration from. We will also have an opportunity to view The Offbeat Sari exhibition (INSERT INFO) looking at the decorative designs incorporated within the textiles. We will explore basic techniques of hand building and decorative techniques, including slip decoration and impressed techniques. You will be encouraged to develop your own ideas and the tutor will teach you how to translate these ideas into your own unique designs. Using the ceramics skills, you have learned you will choose the appropriate techniques to realise your design in clay. The course tutor will encourage you to develop your individual interests and styles and support you through to the completion of your project. Any work you produce on this course is yours to take home. Our fully equipped pottery studio will give you access to various stoneware clays, pottery wheel, glazes, coloured slips, all necessary tools and the firing kilns. World of Quilts: India Kantha (ASC113)
Expand your knowledge, develop ideas based on quilting from other countries, and create some beautiful unique work, in this three-day course. What will you learn on this course? This course will not include long arms, paper piercing, buildings blocks, flying geese or log cabins; if you want to learn how to sew traditional English quilting, this is not the course for you! This course will concentrate on India Kantha quilts. Processes will include rust dyeing, ice dyeing, mono printing and block printing. Your course will include a guided visit to The Offbeat Sari, (INSERT DESCRIPTION) to gather design ideas and inspiration. You will learn new stiches appropriate to Kantha quilts and develop ideas inspired and influenced by a variety of works. Create a main item, such as a cushion cover, sample quilt, wall hanging, book or iPad cover, rice bag etc and plenty of other exciting pieces to use in your other projects at home or on other courses. Several dyeing and printing techniques will be taught at the first session, whilst the second session will include a brief history of the particular style of quilt. You will also plan and prepare your project, and learn the techniques involved. Your item will be completed in the third session. Who is this course for? Indulge in indigo! Indigo is one of the oldest dyes used for colouring fabrics and is still used today to colour jeans. Come and spend a day experimenting with an indigo dye bath, using several interesting resist techniques to create unique samples. What will you learn on this course? Kick the day off experimenting with indigo dye baths and resist techniques to create beautiful blue fabric samples to take home. Your artist Tutor will introduce you to the work of contemporary textile artists, who adapt these traditional indigo techniques to produce beautiful work. In the afternoon, you will get the opportunity to be more experimental, using paper and fabrics to create beautiful patterns using different resists, including machine and hand stitch, and batik wax. Always wanted to try ceramics? During this 2-day course you will learn hand building techniques including traditional coiling and slab building and produce a ceramic vessel, garden planter or sculpture. What will you learn on this course? Develop your skills through the use of traditional coiling or slab building techniques, to produce a ceramic vessel, garden planter or sculpture. You will have the opportunity to explore surface decoration through in-relief modelling, pattern and texture whilst working towards your finished outcome. Your own designs and ideas will be encouraged to enable you to find your personal working style. You will be guided through a number of tutor-led demonstrations and set tasks which will introduce particular tips and techniques. The course will cover the following skills and techniques: • how to successfully develop 2d designs into 3d objects • construction techniques • understanding of the materials and different stages of making • options for design, building, and quality of finish • in-relief modelling, imprinted texture and slip decoration Discuss ideas and intentions with the group and receive support in developing your own independent artistic style. The tutor will develop a guided programme of study with the group providing demonstrations and one-to-one support as required. You are encouraged to develop your own ideas, perhaps through sketched designs, and develop your own working style. South Asian Motif Printmaking (ASC104)
Discover the art of printmaking through lino print inspired by repeat patterns and motif from the regions of South Asia. Learn a variety of intricate techniques and how to work with a printing press. What will you learn on this course? The course takes inspiration from fabric pieces in the ‘Offbeat Sari’ exhibition on display this summer (link). Tutor Haseebah Ali will support you to explore the patterns and designs typically found in sari fabric to create your own multi-colour reduction relief print. Experiment with lino printing and pattern motif before creating a three-colour lino print, adding gilding techniques to complete the work. You will leave with a beautiful print, or small series, to take home for display. You will be using a range of specialist equipment including lino tools, gilding sheets, print rollers, and working with oil and water-based inks. Create a beautifully decorated mirror taking inspiration from colours and patterns used in South Asian design. What will you learn on this course? This workshop is inspired by MAC’s current exhibition the Offbeat Sari (INSERT INFO) which showcases contemporary Indian design. Begin with a visit to the exhibition to gather ideas for your piece. You will then work to decorate a round board with a mirror at the centre, suitable for indoor hanging. Your tutor will provide a template design to follow and guide you through all the steps needed to create your finished work. This course will cover how to: • Create a design in preparation for making a mosaic • Use tile cutters to cut glass and ceramic tiles safely • Understand the adhesives required for an indoor mosaic • How to apply the correct adhesives • How to grout your finished mosaics • Understand what bases you can use for indoor mosaics • Where to source your materials Your mosaic needs to be grouted and will need 24 hours to dry. Hopefully this will be completed in class but could be finished at home or left to dry in our secure cages to collect at a later date. Who is this course for?
