Mandela Hall is part of Queen's University Belfast students' union and plays host to a variety of gigs, club nights, comedy and entertainment. The venue has capacity of up to 1000 people standing and configures for smaller audiences and seated shows for 400. Past performers include Bombay Bicycle Club, Bastille, Passenger, Jake Bugg and Chic.

An evening with frontman of the Happy Mondays. This is a fascinating insight into life in one of the UK's most loved bands. Shaun Ryder is from Salford, Greater Manchester, where in 1980 he formed Happy Mondays. The band signed to Factory Records and their releases included the two classic albums 'Bummed' in 1988 followed by 'Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches' in 1990. Later Shaun started Black Grape releasing the album 'It's Great When You're Straight.. Yeah'. Following his achievements with both bands he received the 'Godlike Genius Award' from NME in 2000. Shaun also moved into TV taking part in the tenth series of the TV show 'I'm a Celebrity.. Get Me Out Of Here!' in 2010 where he was runner up. He also went on to have his own TV programme 'Shaun Ryder on UFOs' on The History Channel in 2013. Shaun has recently been a guest on several TV shows including 'Room 101' with Frank Skinner, 'Stars and Their Cars' with Paddy McGuinness, 'The Chase: Celebrity Special' with Bradley Walsh, 'Sam Delaney's News Thing, This Morning and 'Big Star's Little Star'.

The Orb virtually invented the electronic genre known as ambient house, resurrecting slower, more soulful rhythms and providing a soundtrack for early-morning ravers once the clubs closed their doors. Founded in 1988 by Alex Paterson and The KLF member Jimmy Cauty, membership of The Orb has been fluid over the years, with Paterson remaining the only constant throughout. The Orb released their fifteenth studio album, ‘No Sounds Are Out of Bounds’, in 2018 via Cooking Vinyl. These fifteen albums plus EPs, singles, compilations and live recordings have influenced countless other musicians along the way.

Famous hits like Fools Gold, I Am The Resurrection and I Wanna Be Adored are as recognisable now as were the heyday of Madchester and the Hacienda, the cultural icons from which the original band were born. The Completes, as they are affectionately referenced to by their fans, play to acclaim both from fans themselves, the press, and even original Stone Roses band members. Former Stone Roses bass player Mani, has not only just appeared as a warm up DJ for the band on the odd occasion but has also played onstage with them as their guest bassist playing She Bangs The Drums on more than a few times when he was touring about with the band. Mani says “they do our songs real justice. At times, they play even better than we did.”

The band’s third album, 1990’s platinum-selling ‘Pills 'n' Thrills And Bellyaches’, led to the Happy Mondays crossing over into the mainstream to become icons of Britain’s biggest cultural phenomenon for a generation. In 2016, the Happy Mondays won the Ivor Novello’s Inspiration Award, further cementing their reputation as one of Britain’s most influential and loved bands.

Ben Barnes, actor and singer-songwriter, has announced a performance at Islington’s Assembly Hall this Autumn. Best known for his acting roles as Logan Delos in Westworld, Billy Russo in the in The Punisher and Prince Caspian in The Chronicles of Narnia, Ben in October 2021, realised his 20-year dream of releasing music, in the format of a 5 song EP, Songs for You. Based on his own life experiences, the EP is a soulful and introspective journey, which the title of, was inspired legendary American singer-songwriter Leon Russell’s 1970 track, A Song for You. Since the release of Songs for You, Ben has taken to the stage at some historic venues such as the Troubadour in LA, NYC’s Bowery Ballroom and for his live debut Ben performed at the Hotel Café, LA, which has previously welcomed artists such as Adele, John Mayer, Chris Martin, Billie Eilish and more. A lifelong musical fanatic, Ben began writing songs and working with producers and musicians at the age of just 19, however due to acting commitments never was able to release material.

Richard Thompson with Zara Phillips. - Acoustic Richard Thompsons influence on modern music is immense. As a teenager in the 1960s, he co-founded the pioneering group Fairport Convention, helping to create the distinctive sound of British Folk Rock. By the age of 21, he had left the band to embark on a decade-long musical partnership with his then-wife, Linda Thompson, followed by more than 30 years as a celebrated solo artist. In recent years, Thompson has collaborated with Zara Phillips, a talented musician known for her exceptional vocal and instrumental skills, bringing a fresh dynamic to his performances while maintaining the rich tradition of his music. In 2011, Thompson was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. The Los Angeles Times hailed him as the finest rock songwriter after Dylan and the best electric guitarist since Hendrix, while Rolling Stone placed him among the Top 100 Guitarists of All Time. He has received lifetime achievement honours from the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, the Americana Music Association, and the prestigious Ivor Novello Awards. His song 1952 Vincent Black Lightning was listed in TIME Magazines 100 Greatest Songs Since 1923. A remarkable array of artists including Robert Plant, Elvis Costello, R.E.M., Bonnie Raitt, Tom Jones, David Byrne, Don Henley, and Los Lobos have recorded his songs. His vast body of work includes multiple Grammy-nominated albums and acclaimed soundtracks such as Werner Herzogs Grizzly Man and The Cold Blue (2019). Known for their combined musical chemistry, Thompson and Phillips deliver performances full of energy, virtuosity, and wit, attracting new audiences while celebrating the legacy of Folk Rock. In May 2024, Thompson released Ship to Shore, his first studio album in six years, to widespread critical acclaim.

Belfast TradFest is proud to present the internationally acclaimed Scottish singer-songwriter Dougie MacLean, the legendary voice behind the timeless anthem “Caledonia”, in a very special concert at Mandela Hall on Saturday 14 March 2026 as part of the Belfast St Patrick’s Music Festival 2026. Few songs capture the spirit of home, belonging and identity quite like Caledonia. Although written on a beach in Brittany, the song’s earliest performances took place here in NI — shared informally among friends in the maternal home of celebrated Belfast harper Ursula Burns. Now, decades later, MacLean returns to the city where the song’s journey truly began, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience his music in a place intimately connected to its history. With a career spanning more than four decades, Dougie MacLean has become one of Celtic music’s most cherished figures. His rich blend of heartfelt storytelling, soulful vocals and masterful musicianship has taken him to the world’s great stages, including Carnegie Hall, London’s Festival Theatre, and the Sydney Opera House. From creating some of the most iconic poetry of the modern era, including the world’s most popular wedding poem “I Wanna Be Yours” (which has over a billion streams in its incarnation as a hit record by the Arctic Monkeys) to sharing his life story through his best selling memoir of the same name which is full of John’s much-loved sardonic wit and hilarious ponderings on modern life. John is referenced as a major influence not just by the Arctic Monkeys but also by artists across the globe… As well as musicians like Alex Turner, The Sleaford Mods and Plan B, his legendary number “Evidently Chickentown” plays out the penultimate episode of The Sopranos. Watching John Cooper Clarke perform is an opportunity to see a living legend at the top of his game. Doctor John Cooper Clarke shot to prominence in the 1970s. His recorded album was followed by the release of his first collection 10 Years in an Open Necked Shirt. The book is one of the best-selling poetry anthologies ever in the UK, Canada and Australia. As relevant and vibrant as ever, John Cooper Clarke’s influence is just as visible in contemporary pop culture, with his trademark ‘look’ resonating with fashion-conscious individuals across all demographics and his poetry features in the UK national curriculum syllabus. Having had a groundbreaking effect on modern music, his influence can be eard within the social observations of the Arctic Monkeys, amongst many others. Indie superstars Shed Seven can boast four Top 20 albums and fifteen Top 40 singles. The band from York burst on to the Britpop scene in 1994 and quickly shot to fame. Their hits include Disco Down, Chasing Rainbows and Going For Gold. Shed Seven is made up of drummer Alan Leach, guitarists Joe Johnson and Paul Banks, lead vocals from Rick Witter and Tom Gladwin on bass.
