Mayflower Theatre

The art deco Mayflower Theatre is a grade II listed building and one of the biggest theatres in the country, and with 2,300 seats it's still the largest theatre on the south coast. It opened in 1928 as a theatre but by 1933 it had acquired a cinema screen, and for the next several decades it was mostly used as a cinema and, during the 60s and 70s, a live music venue, hosting concerts by the Beatles, the Stones, Led Zeppelin, Queen, the Police and Kate Bush. It reopened as a theatre in the 80s and today it hosts touring West End shows. Southampton Central station is a few minutes away on foot, and the Mayflower is served by the 3, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12, X5 and X7 bus routes.

Acosta Danza - Cuban Eclectico

Acosta Danza - Cuban Eclectico

9 May 2025 - 10 May 2025

Carlos Acosta is thrilled to be bringing his Cuban dance company Acosta Danza back to Mayflower Theatre. With Cuban Eclectico, the audience will see a group of talented, versatile Cuban dancers showcase works ranging from modern to Afro-Cuban dance: ‘It’s a sample of Cuban life.’ With dancers from both classical and modern dance backgrounds Acosta mixes these techniques with flamenco, capoeira and hip-hop. The result is Acosta’s own identity in which the rich Cuban culture clearly emerges. For Cuban Eclectico, Carlos Acosta collaborated with choreographers from around the world who created pieces inspired by Cuban culture, but with their own ‘twist’. The celebrated Swedish Pontus Lidberg choreographed Paysage, Soudain, la nuit. Lidberg shows the celebration of youth between dusk and dawn on a rumba-inspired score by Leo Brouwer. Seventeen minutes of pure, infectious energy and Latin footwork set to frenzied, traditional music. Satori by the Cuban choreographer Raúl Reinoso, merges contemporary dance with classical ballet lines. The piece illustrates an inward journey to spiritual enlightenment, to the discovery of truth, beauty and light. Spanish choreographer Maria Rovira created Impronta for Acosta Danza, the piece brings together modern and contemporary dance in an evocation of folk dances of Afro-Cuban heritage. The Flemish-Moroccan Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is one of the most sought-after contemporary choreographers in the world. He is known for his imaginative productions that shed new light on cultures and genres of movement. In his interpretation of Faun he gives shape to the confrontation between the human and animal aspects. This duet shows the duality of masculine and feminine energies, discovering and taunting each other.

Performed by Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra It's A Living Thing The Music of Jeff Lynne's ELO
Formed in 1970 in Birmingham UK, the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) is a band that fuses pop music with classical overtones. Jeff Lynne, its creator and continuing driving force added violins, cellos, string basses, horns and woodwind to the standard rock line-up to ‘pick up where the Beatles left off…’ In the 13 years following their arrival on the music scene, they sold over 50 millions records worldwide, accumulated 27 Top 40 songs in the UK singles chart, and 15 in the US charts. In the summer of 2016, they played the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival, and in December, it was announced they had been elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2017. Jeff Lynne continues to front ELO (Jeff Lynne’s ELO). Richard Balcombe and Graham Bickley have now produced a concert celebrating the unique aura of ELO, expanding the classic sound with a treatment that utilises a full symphony orchestra and band, with 6 singers to replicate the glorious wall of vocal sound. The concert celebrates ELO’s catalogue of classic chart hits – not re-imagined, but like you’ve never heard them before! In association with GRB Concerts. Conductor: Richard Balcombe.
