Music Hall

A variety of events fill Aberdeen's Music Hall's calendar, including comedy, theatre, pop music and classical events, as well as the annual Aberdeen International Youth Festival. Housing anywhere from 1300--1500 audience members, the hall was constructed in 1822 and designed by local architect Archibald Simpson, whose work contributed to Aberdeen's nickname as 'the Granite City'. It is a grade A listed buidling. Originally the city's Assembly Rooms, it was later opened to the public as a concert hall in 1859, and a major renovation was comepleted in late 2018. Alongside the main auditorium there is Big Sky Studio seating 100. The Rondo cafe serves snacks and lunches, and the Rondo restuarant opens (on most occasions) when there is an evening event.

“They’ve lasted because they are brilliant” Radio 2 Brothers Patrick and Gregory Kane formed Hue and Cry in the ’80s and the duo made a huge impact with the release of their debut album Seduced and Abandoned (1987) which featured their first top ten single Labour of Love. The follow up album Remote continued the trend and produced the huge hits Looking for Linda and Violently. Albums like Stars Crash Down, Showtime and Jazz Not Jazz ensured Hue and Cry’s continued successful run through the ’90s, whilst their 2005 appearances as finalists on ITV’s primetime show Hit Me Baby One More Time, featuring their version of Beyonce’s Crazy In Love, thrust the band firmly back into the mainstream limelight. A number of successful album releases and accompanying live appearances followed which included Open Soul (2008), Xmasday (2009), Bitter Suite Again (2010), Hot Wire (2012), Remote: Major to Minor (2014), September Songs (2015), Pocketful of Stones (2017). To date Hue and Cry have sold in excess of two million records worldwide. In 2019, Hue and Cry sold out their Summer Nights at the Bandstand show at Glasgow’s Kelvingrove park within forty-eight hours and finished the year by playing live all over the UK. With the global pandemic bringing live touring to a halt during 2020/21, Hue and Cry introduced their pioneering Live from Lockdown streaming shows which were broadcast live from the band’s Glasgow based studio and viewed online by thousands of fans around the world. A collection of their favourite tracks from these shows was released as a Best of Lockdown album (2022). Hue and Cry have sold tens of thousands of concert tickets worldwide. As well as performing alongside some of the greatest artists in music history – appearing with U2, James Brown, Madonna, Al Green and Van Morrison to name but a few – the band have undertaken a multitude of their own headline tours and made numerous festival appearances. Hue and Cry were recognised by their peers when they were recently presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Scottish Music Awards. The 11th annual Aberdeen Pipe Band Concert has quickly emerged as the top performance event of the new UK season, and the 2026 version will see former Grade 1 world Champions, Peoples Ford Boghall & Bathgate Caledonia Pipe Band combine their talents with the hosts Bucksburn & District to mount a show, named “Cabar Fèidh live in Aberdeen 2026” at Aberdeen Music Hall. Peoples Ford Boghall & Bathgate Caledonia Pipe-Major, Calum Watson and the current World Solo Drumming Champion and leading drummer Kerr McQuillan has indicated that their band is well ahead of schedule, developing a new competition medley and are excited to put on a showcase that connects a variety of music tastes and talents for the audience. This will be the band’s 3rd time in Aberdeen with this concert having the same theme as their pre world championship concert at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall in 2024. The London African Gospel Choir Presents Graceland
The London African Gospel Choir, backed their excellent band will perform Paul Simon’s classic record Graceland live from start to finish, alongside a collection of their own tunes. The choir’s re-imagining will take us from smash synth driven You Can Call Me Al to haunting acapella Zulu folk song Homeless and everything in between. The London African Gospel Choir is a collective of African singers, musicians and dancers who specialise in African gospel music. They have performed with the likes of Emeli Sandé, Mumford and Sons and, Annie Lennox, recorded with Idris Elba and John Legend, and are due to headline their own show at the prestigious Barbican Centre, have toured the US, Ireland, France and Romania, and were a feature of the Monte Carlo Jazz Festival. Aberdeen’s spoken word collective Speakin’ Weird collaborate with Light the Blue Festival to produce a special edition of their monthly open mic night aimed specifically at young people aged 18-30. Centring around the festival theme ‘looking forward / looking back’ we are inviting local young performers and a special headline act (to be announced) to take to the stage and share their latest material. We encourage performers wishing to take part to sign up on the night. Suitable for ages 18+ Speakin’ Weird was founded by Orla Shortall in 2017, and has run monthly since then, with a few venue changes in that time – currently we have made our home at Gaelic Lane Cafe. Following Orla’s return to Ireland earlier in 2026, the event is now run and hosted by Hannah Nicholson, Aron Smith and Esmond Sage, all of whom have been part of the local spoken word scene for a number of years. Hannah is a former Scottish Book Trust New Writers Awardee, Aron hosts Brutha Voodoo’s Playlist Obscura on ShmuFM, and Esmond is involved in a variety of local causes. We bring a variety of headliners every month to our stage, as well as hosting an open mic, with the aim of fostering an environment which is welcoming and inclusive. The evening will culminate in a spectacular collaborative finale, bringing together young performers from all participating organisations, with a special addition from dancers of the Emma Lowson Dance School for a truly memorable closing performance. The excitement also begins well before the actual event. In the lead-up months to the concert, NESCol Film and TV students will be capturing behind-the-scenes footage, documenting the rehearsals, preparations, and growing anticipation. This exclusive film will be premiered live during the collaborative set on the night. Aberdeen City Instrumental Music Service is in every school in the city, providing instrumental music tuition through lessons, projects and experiences. Our Music Centre ensembles range from Wind Bands, String Orchestras, Choirs and Guitar Groups to Rock Band, Jazz Ensemble and Folk Collective. This 10-piece band have spent the last 12 months exploring the world of the Modern Scottish Traditional Music scene. This typically involves blending Scottish tunes with modern, pop-sounding backing, focusing on getting audiences to dance! The Instrumental Music Service operates in all 17 Community School Networks across Aberdeenshire, providing group and individual lessons. We are committed to working together with schools and communities to secure continuous improvement in outcomes for children and young people and to have better, integrated working arrangements within Education and Children’s Services in pursuit of improved outcomes for children and young people. Our ambition is to offer the best opportunities for as many people as possible to benefit from our Service. We aim to provide and maintain an efficient and modern service which maximises digital technology and new ways of working in order to support instrumental music tuition in Scotland by working in partnership with communities, schools, organisations and individuals. SC&T Youth offers a year-round program of engaging and high-quality opportunities for young people aged 6-26 with an interest in Scottish Traditional music, extending across Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, and beyond. Every Tuesday during term time, the SC&T Youth performance group, made up of young musicians from various locations in the City and Shire, meet to play music, collaborate on new sets, and collectively learn and develop their musical skills whilst making valuable friendships too! Big Noise Torry is a music and social change programme delivered by Sistema Scotland. They work with over 750 children and young people from the Torry community, including babies/toddlers, nursery and primary school children, and older young people at Lochside Academy, plus children who live in Torry but attend school elsewhere. Big Noise uses the orchestra as a community through which children gain an invaluable range of life skills and experiences. sound is a new music incubator based in North East Scotland which aims to increase access to new music, encourage excellence and experimentation, and nurture talent. It achieves this through a variety of activities including the annual soundfestival, a composer support programme, and Get Creative, a year-round youth programme. sound’s monthly Get Creative workshops prompt the creation, improvisation and exploration of new music collaboratively. Led by composers and music educators, the Get Creative Ensemble for 12-18 year olds allows participants of grade 2-3 level and above to explore creativity and music through improvisation, group composition, making graphic scores and playing contemporary works. Light the Blue is our multi-artform festival for and by young people returning on 2 – 14 June 2026 with a programme of theatre, music, dance, visual arts and more taking place across Aberdeen city. With over 24 events across 13 days, this year’s festival asks our artists and audiences What’s your story? Whether  it’s  ‘our story so far’ or ‘our hopes and dreams for the future’ – our stories and imaginations can shape who we are, who we want to become and even the world around us.   Join us for Light the Blue 2026, where over 1,000 young and professional artists, school pupils and early career creatives from across Scotland will come together to celebrate new and emerging talent, creating opportunities and connection.
