Music Hall

A variety of events fill Aberdeen's Music Hall's calendar, including comedy, theatre, pop music and classical events, as well as the annual Aberdeen International Youth Festival. Housing anywhere from 1300--1500 audience members, the hall was constructed in 1822 and designed by local architect Archibald Simpson, whose work contributed to Aberdeen's nickname as 'the Granite City'. It is a grade A listed buidling. Originally the city's Assembly Rooms, it was later opened to the public as a concert hall in 1859, and a major renovation was comepleted in late 2018. Alongside the main auditorium there is Big Sky Studio seating 100. The Rondo cafe serves snacks and lunches, and the Rondo restuarant opens (on most occasions) when there is an evening event.

The follow up album Remote continued the trend and produced the huge hits Looking for Linda and Violently. Albums like Stars Crash Down, Showtime and Jazz Not Jazz ensured Hue and Cry’s continued successful run through the ’90s, whilst their 2005 appearances as finalists on ITV’s primetime show Hit Me Baby One More Time, featuring their version of Beyonce’s Crazy In Love, thrust the band firmly back into the mainstream limelight. A number of successful album releases and accompanying live appearances followed which included Open Soul (2008), Xmasday (2009), Bitter Suite Again (2010), Hot Wire (2012), Remote: Major to Minor (2014), September Songs (2015), Pocketful of Stones (2017). To date Hue and Cry have sold in excess of two million records worldwide. Aberdeen Bach Choir - Johannes Brahms

25 Apr 2027 - 25 Apr 2027

The Aberdeen Bach Choir together with the Aberdeen Sinfonietta bring two beautiful works by Johannes Brahms to the Music Hall. Conductor and Musical Director, Dr Paul Tierney will lead the choir and orchestra in this performance sung in German accompanied by two acclaimed soloists. The first half will contain Brahms’ Schicksalslied (“Song of Fate”), Op. 54 (1868-1871), sometimes dubbed as the “Little Requiem”, which is a cantata for choir and orchestra. The piece is based on a poem by Friedrich Hölderlin. The second half will contain Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem (“A German Requiem”), Op.45 (1865-1868) which is a profound seven-movement masterpiece for choir and orchestra. It was written by Brahms after the death of his mother but composed to be a piece of music that brought comfort, solace and hope to the living. It brought international acclaim to Brahms during his lifetime and is one of his best loved and most recognisable works.”
National Youth Choir of Scotland (NYCOS): Carmina Burana (Conductor - Christopher Bell)
NYCOS 30th Anniversary: Carmina Burana In 2026, the National Youth Choir of Scotland celebrates its 30th anniversary by returning to one of the most iconic choral works ever written: Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. This thrilling cantata, composed in 1935–36, sets 24 medieval poems from the Carmina Burana manuscript — bold, earthy and timeless texts exploring fate, springtime, love, celebration and the unpredictability of life. Orff’s music is instantly recognisable for its driving rhythms, powerful choral lines and vivid orchestral colour, framed by the world‑famous opening and closing movement, O Fortuna. Carmina Burana has become a cornerstone of the choral repertoire and continues to captivate audiences worldwide with its raw energy and dramatic sweep. The programme will also include the world premiere of The World by Jay Capperauld, with text by Robert Louis Stevenson and Niall Campbell, and The Passing of the Year by Jonathan Dove. One hundred and ten of Scotland’s finest young singers will be accompanied by two pianos and percussion, conducted by Christopher Bell, NYCOS Founder and Artistic Director. A landmark in NYCOS history Thirty years ago, NYCOS began its journey with a performance of Carmina Burana in this version for two pianos and percussion. It was an ambitious undertaking for a fledgling choir of just 62 singers, divided into double choir and with scarcely any tenors — “a miracle it happened at all,” as those involved recall. That performance set the tone for the ambition and musical excellence that would define the next three decades of NYCOS’s work. About the National Youth Choir of Scotland The National Youth Choir of Scotland is an outstanding choir for young people aged 16 to 25, directed by world‑renowned conductor Christopher Bell. Recognised with the Ensemble Award from the Royal Philharmonic Society, membership is granted by annual audition to singers born, resident or studying in Scotland. During Scotland’s Year of Young People in 2018, the choir held a residency at the Edinburgh International Festival, receiving a Herald Angel Award for its performance of Haydn’s The Creation, followed by a sold‑out a cappella concert in the Usher Hall. In both 2024 and 2025, NYCOS opened the Edinburgh International Festival to great acclaim, described as “astonishing” and “heroic”. NYCOS has toured internationally to the USA, Sweden, Ireland, Germany and Hungary; performed at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Philharmonie de Paris; and appeared with major orchestras and festivals across Scotland and beyond. Join us as we celebrate 30 years of exceptional youth choral singing with this exhilarating and unforgettable work. Doors 7.30pm
Brahms's Piano Concerto No.1

Brahms's Piano Concerto No.1

23 Apr 2027 - 23 Apr 2027

Laila Arafah New Work (BBC Commission, World Premiere) (c.12 mins) Beethoven Symphony No.8 in F Major (c.25 mins) interval Brahms Piano Concerto No.1 (c.50 mins) Denis Kozhukhin piano Ryan Wigglesworth conductor The gale roars, and the orchestra hurls down its challenge. The opening of Brahms’s youthful First Piano Concerto is a long way from the image of the gruff old composer, with his baggy trousers and beard, and this huge, emotionally-charged concerto has been described as a symphony in all but name. It demands a pianist of formidable talents, and we’ve got one today. “Even in a day when keyboard virtuosos are thick on the ground, Kozhukhin is special” wrote one critic of Denis Kozhukhin, and he’s no stranger to the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. His performance should be a thrilling counterpart to the playful energy of Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony and the intimate, compelling sound-world of Laila Arafah, one of today’s most original voices. Book four concerts and save 30% or book 3 concerts (excluding Christmas Classics) and save 25%. This offer is open until Friday 30 October 2026 and only applies to full price tickets.

BBC SSO Beethoven's Symphony No.7

11 Feb 2027 - 12 Feb 2027

Takemitsu How slow the wind (c.10 mins) Dai Fujikura Double Concerto for flute, violin and orchestra (c.20 mins) interval Beethoven Symphony No.7 in A major (c.38 mins). Akiko Suwanai violin Adam Walker flute Ilan Volkov conductor. There’s only one Ludwig van Beethoven, and although he died 200 years ago this year, his music still burns with the bright, unquenchable power of life itself. “I am the new Bacchus, pressing out glorious wine for all humanity”, he declared, and his Seventh Symphony goes straight to your head: unstoppable, elemental and triumphantly human. But BBC SSO Creative Partner Ilan Volkov never takes any music for granted. Against Beethoven’s headlong energy, he’s set two very different visions by modern Japanese masters. Takemitsu explores the poetic world of Emily Dickinson, and Dai Fujikura imagines our violin and flute soloists as birds — soaring free, leading flocks and murmurations of extraordinary sounds. This promises to be ravishing.

Björn Again

Björn Again

27 Aug 2026 - 11 Apr 2027

Björn Again. The original Australian ABBA Homage has amassed over 5,800 shows in 78 countries in 39 years. Rod Stephen had previously been working in metallurgical research when at the age of 29 and inspired by legendary New Zealand band Split Enz’s musicianship and theatrics opted for a career change to create a new concept by revisiting the music and fashion of the 1970s. Rod had originally considered basing a nostalgic show on one of three all time top bands, The Beatles, Queen and ABBA but believing that the latter globally encapsulated all that was good (and maybe some not so good?) about the 1970s decided ABBA was ideal to focus his efforts on. After countless auditions and months of rehearsals and studying music and videos all Rod then needed was to devise a great show format to go with the name…and then the BJÖRN AGAIN show was ready to rock and roll !!! Having been acknowledged by BJÖRN ULVAEUS as being the show that single-handedly initiated the ABBA revival in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the BJÖRN AGAIN show is hailed as the most popular and successful show of its type.

Richard Ayoade - Afterthoughts

2 Jul 2026 - 15 Jul 2026

Partially recognisable for being in The IT Crowd, his acclaimed films Submarine and The Double, he has also hosted TV landfill like Travel Man and The Crystal Maze, and lent his nasal voice to The Boxtrolls, Early Man, Soul and The Bad Guys. But you may well know him best for his role as ‘photographer’ in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers in which he delivered the iconic line: ‘Please, Mer Sellers, can I get a shot of you and your mum?’ Now, in the midst of some self-inflicted financial difficulty, he turns to the stage, inviting you to explore over 500 of his colossal notions. Thoughts like… Where’s the box to tick if you ARE a robot? If, when one door shuts, another door opens, there's something wrong with your doors. They shouldn't be doing that. TV detectives need a gimmick. Mine would be not caring who did it. Afterthoughts goes beyond rumination, past pondering, probing further than ever before. Drawing from a deeply private pool of questions—a reservoir so refreshing you may never need to think again.
