Don José falls deeply in love with Carmen and sacrifices everything to be with her. But when Carmen becomes infatuated with toreador Escamillo she spurns Don José, whose love quickly turns to violent jealousy - all with tragic consequences. Bizet’s Carmen is considered one of the most powerful operas ever written and its gorgeous melodies have a hold on the popular imagination – Escamillo’s Toreador Song, Carmen’s Habanera and Don José’s Flower Song are among the most widely known and enjoyed pieces of Western classical music. This version of Carmen is set to Rodion Shchedrin's orchestration of Bizet's opera score with additional Cuban music.
