Simon Evans: Simon Evans is Staring at the Sun
Staring at the Sun sees Simon Evans (Live at the Apollo, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Simon Evans Goes to Market, One Person Found This Helpful) squinting at an uncertain future, revisiting the blue remembered hills of his youth and trying to stay human as the world around him gets smarter. With the AI singularity looming and “reality” feeling increasingly unstable, Evans looks ahead to the coming shockwaves of technology, and back to the analogue pleasures of hitch-hiking, pub bets, and getting properly lost. Turning his famously dry, surgically precise style on the big modern questions: Are we living in a computer simulation? What happens when your body starts issuing software updates you didn’t request? And is staring straight at a solar eclipse, against expert advice, actually an act of courageous self-sacrifice on the road to true enlightenment? Part philosophical exploration, part nostalgic joyride, Staring at the Sun is a hilarious analysis of reality and trust from a man desperately trying to keep his balance while the floor keeps moving. The tone is unmistakably Evans: provocative, literate, and playfully combative, but also soaked in self-awareness. Evans draws on theories propounded by philosophers and mystics since the days of Plato and Ecclesiastes, casting himself as a public intellectual but constantly undercutting his points with brutally funny domestic truths. Simon Evans is one of the UK’s most respected and best loved comedians who has been at the top of his game for over twenty-five years. His TV credits include two appearances on BBC One’s Live at the Apollo, one on Michael McIntyre’s Roadshow, and a season of Channel 4’s Stand Up for the Week. On BBC Radio 4 his series Simon Evans Goes to Market, delighting audiences with his witty and insightful take on the comedically-unpromising territory of economics, has had six seasons. He is also a regular on Radio 4’s The News Quiz, and various other panel games, and from 1998 to 2002 wrote and hosted eight series of the news satire, The Way It Is. He also stars in One Person Found This Helpful – a Radio 4 show he co-devised with Jason Hazely and Pozzitive Productions, that has fun with on-line customer reviews and hosted Headliners – a regular preview of the following day’s newspapers with two other comedians on GB News. Evans is also in demand as a columnist and has written extensively for The Spectator, The Telegraph and Spiked.

Tashi Lhunpo Monks - The Power of Peace
Tibet – the Land of Snows: home to Buddhist lamas whose ancient rituals have fascinated people for centuries. Captain John Noel films, Climbing Mount Everest and The Epic of Everest brought moving images of the 1922 and 1924 British mountaineers, their sherpas and guides and the astonishing landscape of the Himalayas to western audiences for the first time. Furthermore Captain Noel invited seven Tibetan Lamas from Gyantse in Central Tibet to travel to Europe to provide a ‘prologue’ to screenings of The Epic of Everest on it's 1924/1925 tour. Now a hundred years later, monks from Tashi Lhunpo Monastery recreate the original prologue with the same magnificent instruments and distinctive music which so captivated audiences in the 1920s, followed by a live performance. From the Tantric tradition of Tibet five monks from Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in India bring the unique art of sand mandala making, using millions of grains of coloured sand to represent a Buddha’s earthly palace. Watch as the monks build up the intricate design of the Peace Mandala, memorised during years of study, from the first grain of sand to the final ceremony of the ritual dismantling of the mandala. In The Power of Peace, performances of the sacred mantras, music and dance from the Monastery open a magical window on to a world of reincarnation and mysticism. From the mesmerising chant of Buddhist texts to swirling costumed masked dances accompanied by ancient Tantric musical instruments: horns made from human leg bones, skull-drums, cymbals, bells and the great dungchen (long horns), the monks evoke the atmosphere of sacred Tibet offering an experience of an ancient, endangered culture.

Brooks Williams and Aaron Catlow

Brooks Williams and Aaron Catlow

13 Aug 2026 - 13 Aug 2026

Brooks Williams and Aaron Catlow create a fiery, fearless sound of Americana, folk and country blues. Their musical chemistry is a spark that sets the stage ablaze with a spontaneous high-energy. There literally is no one performing today creating this kind of acoustic music. Their repertoire is genre busting. There’s the bluegrass-swing of Gillian Welch’s Red Clay Halo, complete with aw-shucks whistling. The Celtic-blues of their self-penned Anniesland, a song for the late-great Rab Noakes. Their metal-like riff-driven arrangement of Molly Tuttle’s Dooley’s Farm. And audiences love it! At the Blue Room Sessions in The Netherlands, at Cambridgeshire’s Ely Folk Festival, at The Atkinson in Southport as well as North Yorkshire’s Victoria Hall. At Paisley’s Arts Centre and St. David’s Hall in Cardiff, audiences can’t get enough of the high-energy Williams-Catlow collaboration. The duo have three recordings to date. Ghost Owl, from 2021, was nominated Instrumental Album Of The Year. Ready For The Times, called ‘a cracker’ by Living Tradition, followed in 2022. Greens And Blues came out in 2024 and was praised by At The Barrier for its ‘cosmic violin’ and ‘delicious guitar’. In 2026 Brooks and Aaron will release their fourth recording. Tentatively called Working In Wood, the duo team up with the amazing Jon Short (John Martin Project) on dog-house bass and features fan-favourites like London Road, Deep River Blues (with full-on Everly Brothers-style harmonies), and a ‘south of the border’ reading of Emmy Lou Harris’ Love And Happiness. Aaron Catlow is the founder of festival-favourite Sheelanagig, celebrating 20-years on the road, and has a long-standing duo touring with guitarist Kit Hawes. Other credits including playing with Grammy Award-nominated Yola, Mad Dog Mcrea and Afro Celt Sound System. Brooks Williams, from Statesboro Georgia USA now living in Cambridge UK, is a Top 100 acoustic guitarist, singer and songwriter known for his solo shows as well as his collaborations with Vera van Heeringen, Hans Theessink, Sally Barker, Guy Davis and Sloan Wainwright. Named the Best Live Act by RnR, Brooks Williams and Aaron Catlow represent 'live music at its best,' says Americana UK. Their shows are infused with pathos, humour and buckets of talent. Guaranteed to get you out of your seat. Studio £16.50

John Horler Trio - Celebrating Bill Evans
John Horler's Trio's Celebrating Bill Evans is a rare opportunity to experience one of Britain's top jazz pianists playing the music he loves; music with enduring, timeless appeal. John is a British jazz legend. He has played with everyone from Chet Baker to Dame Cleo Laine; Sir John Dankworth to Maynard Ferguson - the who’s who of British jazz stars. This special show celebrates the music, legacy and genius of Bill Evans - and the direct impact Bill had on John’s illustrious musical life. John was a 17-year-old student at The Royal Academy of Music when he first saw Bill play live in London. It was a genuinely life-changing moment. He was so overcome - so inspired - that he fainted; carried out of the venue on his brother's shoulders. From that moment on, John devoted his life to fulfilling his ambition of becoming a jazz musician. To say he achieved this is an understatement; John went on to become one of our most cherished jazz artists. This is just one of John's many stories; tales he ebulliently shares in between tunes; paying homage to Bill Evans and his pioneering explorations in modern jazz. Join us for an evening of wonderful musicianship and interplay - performed by a pianist who is one of the leading interpreters and proponents of Bill Evans’ music. John is joined by two musicians - Tim Wells on bass, and Ronnie Jones on drums - who love and admire the repertoire just as much as John does himself. As the saying goes: Everybody digs Bill Evans. The trio have played three sold headline shows at Ronnie Scott's (two with Alec Dankworth on bass) and have also appeared at East Side Jazz Club, Reading Jaz, and Norden Farm twice; as well as gigs at Watermill Jazz - and two successful West Country tours. - John Horler - piano - Tim Wells - bass - Ronnie Jones - drums
