Norwich Arts Centre

Norwich Arts Centre, housed in the converted 14th-century church of St Swithun, has a lively programme of exhibitions and family events, but is also distinguished by a commitment to live performance, featuring touring bands and live comedy. The centre earned a small but notable place in rock history as being the venue where, in 1991, Manic Street Preacher Richey Edwards notoriously squicked out journalist Steve Lamacq by carving the words '4 REAL' into his own forearm. The centre has hosted many other bands and comedians, including Nirvana, Oasis, Coldplay, The Libertines, Mark Lamarr, Sue Perkins and Mark Thomas. Norwich station is situated about 20 minutes away by foot, to the east of the city. Bus stops on nearby Westwick Street are served by routes 5, 28, 29, 29A, 29B and 29S.

The multi award winning comedian is back on tour with a brand-new show all about growing up as a CODA; A Child of Deaf Adults. His upbringing was nothing like the Oscar winning film and he’s here to tell you why. CODA is a funny, heartwarming show all about the brilliant things that happen when you grow up in a house where sign language is the first language used; whether it’s watching his dad shut his eyes to win any argument or beating his in-laws easily when they suggested playing charades against a deaf family on Christmas Day. Ray’s previous shows Deaf Com One and Doppelginger were huge successes and sold-out theatres across the world. As this show is all about growing up with deaf parents every show of CODA will have a BSL interpreter. Ray has previously supported John Bishop on his UK arena tour after John described him as ‘one of the best comedians in the country’.

The Sunday Times has described them as “wonderful”; the Telegraph named them one of its ‘favourite new bands”; Mark Radcliffe on Radio 2 said a “great night out was guaranteed” at their joyful shows; and veteran DJ Johnnie Walker praises their gigs as “a really good, fun time”. Eliot James (of Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party, Noah and the Whale, and Two Door Cinema Club fame) produced the band’s second CD, and Al Scott (Seth Lakeman, Oysterband, The Levellers, Asian Dub Foundation) oversaw the new album, ‘Wild By the Side of the Road’, which spent several weeks in the official UK Americana charts. Police Dog Hogan were one of only three UK bands invited to Nashville to perform at the prestigious Americana Music Association Awards, where DJ Bob Harris – in town for the awards – snapped them up for a recording that has become one of the most-watched YouTube videos on his “Under the Apple Tree Sessions” channel.

Katherine Priddy

Katherine Priddy

16 Apr 2026 - 9 May 2026

Over the past three years, Priddy has quietly been building a growing following, captivating audiences around the UK with her haunting vocals, rich harmonies, distinctive finger picking guitar style and enchanting songs whose lyrics celebrate her life-long love affair with literature and poetry. She has been championed by BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music and her debut EP 'Wolf' was chosen by Richard Thompson as his Best Thing I've Heard All Year in MOJO Magazine in 2018. With the buzz around her building, Priddy is making her mark in 2021 with the release of an eagerly-anticipated debut album on Navigator Records, The Eternal Rocks Beneath, which is set to bring her to even wider notice. The 10 self-penned tracks are delivered with a maturity and depth that belie the fact that this is her first full length release. At times tender, at times carrying a darker edge, the stories she weaves are transporting. Not surprising then that Nick Drake, John Martyn, Tunng and Scott Matthews are amongst her many influences. It has already received an amazing response from radio and press, including a 4 star review from The Observer, which described it as 'an accomplished set of original songs delivered in a breathtaking voice'. Meanwhile, Folk Radio declared it 'A debut of true substance, it's like searching for a simple shelter and stumbling upon a diamond mine'. The album was recorded over a 2-year period at Rebellious Jukebox studios, a little basement studio hidden beneath inner-city Birmingham and presided over by masterful producer Simon Weaver. The ensemble cast of musicians, including a sweeping string section, occasionally cut through by raw electric guitar and drums, as well as Richard March (Pop Will Eat Itself) on double bass and Mikey Kenny on fiddle, enhance Priddy's command of melody and lyricism and provide the perfect backdrop for the feelings of nostalgia and timelessness that underpin the record. Having already racked up some serious air play from the likes of Tom Robinson, Guy Garvey, Cerys Matthews, Radcliffe & Maconie, Gideon Coe, Steve Lamacq and Janice Long, as well as supported the likes of Richard Thompson & The Chieftains and playing well-earned spots at festivals and sell-out headline shows around the country, Priddy is a fast-rising star on the scene. The Eternal Rocks Beneath is poised to cement the place of this determined young woman in the folk world and beyond.

Notes fall like raindrops, quickening pace as the clouds gather. The piano melody splish sploshes into the electronic soundscape; the trees become denser, the journey more profound. Belle Chen’s album Ravel In The Forest, released on the Platoon label, leads the listener through ancient woodland, quiet clearings and tropical canopies. We’re accompanied by birds, a chameleon, a dragonfly – the wonder of the natural world is imbued into this imaginary space. Receiving a standing ovation at her EFG London Jazz Festival debut in 2024, Belle is praised as an artist that is ‘Original and provocative… feels like the sense of discovery’ (Brian Eno). The Australian Music Prize-nominated artist’s latest album charted at #7 on UK Official Chart (Specialist Classical) and #15 on Australia’s ARIA Chart (Classical). In her live shows, Belle takes a quirky, yet tender approach to musical storytelling. With the unmistakable influences of Maurice Ravel, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Joe Hisaishi’s melodic sweetness shining through, Belle blends sonic synth explorations, classical virtuosity, and free flowing improvisations that feel equally at home on jazz or experimental stages. This is a solo performance that is not to be missed, with Belle performing tunes from her Ravel In The Forest album and new material. Chen’s releases have gathered Australian Music Prize nominations and amassed over 50 million streams to-date.

Poppy Ackroyd

Poppy Ackroyd

8 Jun 2026 - 11 Jun 2026

In February 2018, breath-taking post-classical artist Poppy Ackroyd released her first full-length album with One Little Indian Records, Resolve. A classically trained pianist, violinist, producer, and composer, Ackroyd turned heads in the neo-classical world with her previous works Escapement and Feathers, as well as her involvement in Hidden Orchestra (Tru Thoughts). However, Resolve saw Ackroyd receive global acclaim from critics and new fans alike, with a sold out Barbican show and then another at Southbank Centre's Purcell Rooms to boot. The unique musician returned at the start of the year newly signed to Bjork's label One Little Indian Records, fresh off the back of an acoustic mini-album Sketches and set to release her brand new self-produced full-length record her most ambitious and progressive piece of work to date. The ground-breaking album explores life's constant challenges, and many of the songs are extremely personal to Poppy. In her own words: 'Resolve is about the determination to embrace the good things in life whilst dealing with unexpected and challenging difficulties. Finding the light in the dark, facing sadness and loss head on, and developing a growing inner strength.' Although a keen collaborator outside of her solo work having created soundtracks for film, dance, physical theatre and radio Resolve is the first record for which Poppy employed other players, including Manu Delago (Bjork, Cinematic Orchestra, Anoushka Shankar) playing hang, Mike Lesirge (Bonobo, Andreya Triana) playing clarinets and flute, and Jo Quail on cello. On opening track Paper, the musician creatively recorded and manipulated experimental beats, born from using paper over piano strings. The principal melody on Stems was created using a combination of pianino (a very small toy piano) and wine glasses. The piece sound-tracked a Bafta-winning short animation by Ainslie Henderson. Trains, the lead single from the album, simulates the sounds, movement, speed and changing scenery of a train journey. The track's accompanying time-lapse video has won 12 awards, including the Gold Movie Awards and South London Shorts. Ackroyd creates percussive textures from traditional classical instruments, and the result is almost the emulation of an entire orchestra, using very few instruments combined with the artist's incredible production skills. The intelligent artist works by recording improvised contemporary classical piano motifs and then rearranging and manipulating these sounds digitally. The result is a fantastic fusion of acoustic and electronic in a post-classical setting. 'Resolve puts her comfortably on par with neo-classical giants Nils Frahm, Max Richter and Hauschka' MOJO 'Occupying a space somewhere between Nils Frahm and warped electronic composer Anna Meredith' Q Magazine AGE RESTRICTION: This show is 14+. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.
The Hanging Stars

The Hanging Stars

8 Oct 2026 - 13 Nov 2026

Blending folk pastoralism with swampy 60s Americana, The Hanging Stars sound like the missing link between the California desert sun and the grey skies of London Town. The album was recorded between LA, Nashville and Walthamstow, with each of these vastly different places leaving an indelible mark on the songs. Their debut album Over the Silvery Lake came out in March 2016. The band is made up of songwriter, singer and guitarist Richard Olson, Sam Ferman on bass, Paulie Cobra on drums, Patrick Ralla on banjo, guitar, keyboards and assorted instruments, with pedal steel courtesy of Horse and Joe Harvey Whyte.
