Norwich cathedral contains over five thousand individual graffiti inscriptions, dating from as far back as the twelfth century. Medieval ships sail across the stonework, jostling aside images of wading birds and elaborate compass drawn designs. Join this tour for an entirely new perspective on the cathedral’s already rich and vibrant past. Please note, our specialist tours always sell out quickly so make sure you book a ticket straight away. The tour starts at 2.15pm on Wednesday 2nd October Arriving for the tour Please ask a member of the welcome or donations team when you arrive, and they will direct you to the starting point for the tour. Nccl: Language In Norwich Churches

Nccl: Language In Norwich Churches

2 May 2026 - 2 May 2026

Whilst we often think of English being the main language in churches after the Reformation, and Latin before the Reformation, the reality in Norwich has been somewhat more complex than this. In this morning course, Professor Christopher Joby leads us through more than one thousand years of church history in Norwich examining who was using which languages in which churches. To add to Latin and English, Dutch and French were used in the Stranger churches for several centuries. In non-conformist churches, such as the Quaker and the Congregationalist Meeting Houses, the English differed significantly from that of the Book of Common Prayer which shaped Anglican liturgy. More recently, Polish and Church Slavonic have added to the range of languages used for worship in Norwich churches. Exploring these languages offers a way into thinking about social relationships in Norwich. This teaching session is led by Professor Christopher Joby. Cost: 10 plus a small booking fee. Cost is non-refundable
Nccl: Jesus In Matthew's Gospel - The Fulfiller Of The Law?
This session will look at the portrayal of Jesus in Matthew, this years lectionary gospel. We will start with a survey of the shape of the gospel as a whole and touch on Matthews major themes, noting how he adapts and expands one of his major sources, the gospel of Mark. We will then use the Sermon on the Mount to examine how Matthew presents Jesus teaching, and to discuss some puzzling aspects: how is it that Matthew seems both the most Jewish of the gospels and at times one of the most anti-Jewish? What is Jesus attitude to the Torah? Through our discussions on these and other questions in the course of the morning we will gain a sense of the distinctive aspects of the gospel - what makes Matthew Matthean. This teaching session is led by Dr Jane McLarty. Cost: 10 plus a small booking fee. The cost is non-refundable.
Nccl: Bishop Shute Barrington - Bridging The Long Eighteenth Century
Bishop Shute Barrington (1734-1826), whose 200th anniversary of death is celebrated this year, was the penultimate Prince Bishop of Durham for 35 years. A number of different aspects of his background and his work as a bishop, as well as his longevity, combine to make him an interesting figure who in many ways bridges the religious turmoil of the seventeenth century and the emergence of the modern church parties in the nineteenth century. He was also considerably engaged with the political and economic emergence of Britain as a global super-power, and with the rise of modern science. A biography of Barrington has never been written, but in 2025 Edward Carter used some sabbatical leave to research his life and times. This project drew upon previously unknown primary sources, which will be presented as part of this seminar. This teaching session will be led by the Revd Canon Edward Carter. Cost: 10 plus a small booking fee. Cost is non-refundable.
Nccl: St Olaf - A Saint For East Anglians?
St Olaf is the patron saint of Norway a king who died in battle in 1030, was acclaimed a martyr, and to whom miracles of healing have been attributed. He was a king of Norway, yet the roots of his cult and a significant legacy are to be found in East Anglia. Norwich had two churches dedicated to him, and Norwich Cathedral is twinned with his shrine church, Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway. Come and learn more about this enigmatic and sometimes controversial saint. This teaching session is led by the Revd Canon Dr Peter Doll. Cost: 10 plus a small booking fee. Cost is non-refundable.
