The List

O2 Academy Leeds

The O2 Academy Leeds' Grade I listed building is a majestic hunk of Victorian Gothic, opening as the Coliseum in 1885 and originally an all-purpose theatre/meeting house/circus venue. It morphed into a cinema in the 20s and a bingo hall in the 60s before becoming the Town and Country Club in 1992. Since 2007 it's been run by Academy Music Group, hosting international acts in the main auditorium and local bands in the Underground space. The nearest train station is Leeds, about 15 minutes' walk down Park Row. The nearest car parking is at Woodhouse Lane and the Rose Bowl Car Park around the back of the venue on Portland Crescent. Local buses stop on Caverley Street, Woodhouse Lane, Portland Way and Albion Street.

The Dualers

The Dualers

2 May 2025 - 7 Mar 2026

A musical force of sheer ska and party spirit; The Dualers' rise to kings of good times and the live music circuit has been a remarkable feat. Over what has been a lengthy career in music for frontman Tyber Cranstoun, the nine-piece reggae and ska outfit have become a live phenomenon, selling out shows up and down the UK on account of their high energy, all embracing performances that dip into original numbers and lovingly selected covers. With sold out dates way in advance of the Dualers even playing them, the group are seriously hot property on the live scene and have compounded this with news of their biggest tour yet, taking on some huge shows across the UK.
The Southmartins

The Southmartins

17 May 2025 - 28 Feb 2026

The Southmartins are a unique tribute to the songs and sound of The Beautiful South & Housemartins. Constantly gigging since early 2010 in the UK they have built up an unbeatable reputation as a live experience. With a set of classic hits and other bits to draw upon such as Song For Whoever, Don't Marry Her, Perfect 10, Happy Hour and many more they are guaranteed to make you smile, dance and sing. Rather than merely trying to recreate or reproduce the original recordings, or even live performances of the original bands, The Southmartins have always put their own stamp on the material and have led the way in how they approach paying tribute to these classic songs. This is not simple mimicry. Having said that, lead singer Andy's voice is about as close to Paul Heaton as you could hope for without it being the man himself (who has said the band are "very good") and with a highly skilled, and lively band they inject a huge amount of energy and soul into their shows.

It smells like cheeseburgers and teen spirit, daddy-o! The K's

The K's

8 May 2025 - 8 Aug 2025

The K’s: Jamie Boyle (vocals/guitar); Ryan Breslin (guitar); Dexter Baker (bass); Jordan Holden (drums). These four young men are a word-of-mouth phenomenon that’s rapidly becoming too huge to ignore. On the surface, the appeal of The K’s seems simple: embodying the relatable frustrations of everyday Britain and its zero hours economy, yearning for a better life in escapist anthems like epic next single Landmines and breakthrough tune Glass Towns. But if creating timeless thrills really was so simple, other bands would rack up so many streams and routinely sell out tours, thanks to the frenzied fan community the band has nurtured. Their gigs are a guaranteed riot, but that shouldn’t overlook the sophistication that gives The K’s the immediately identifiable blueprint all special bands soon develop. Debut single Sarajevo is one of the few rock & roll songs to namecheck Austro-Hungary, notching up over 1.5 million streams in the process.
Cast

Cast

13 Jun 2025 - 5 Dec 2025

Originally formed in 1992 from the ashes of The La’s and Shack, Cast released four albums and had ten top 10 singles before disbanding in 2001. As one of the most traditional guitar bands to emerge during the Brit-pop era of the mid-'90s, Cast have carved out a sound that was heavily indebted to the British Invasion of the early '60s, yet it was infused with a mystical, pseudo-hippie lyrical sensibility, which lead singer John Power expanded upon in all of his interviews. What really made Cast into a success was Power's gift for simple, classic pop hooks, as demonstrated on the hit singles "Fine Time," "Alright," and "Walkaway." Cast became a very, very popular band within Britain following the success of Oasis and Blur. Labelled ‘The Who of the 90’s’, Noel Gallagher once described watching Cast play live as “a religious experience.”

Public Service Broadcasting

Public Service Broadcasting

6 Aug 2025 - 6 Aug 2025

Public Service Broadcasting have been “teaching the lessons of the past through the music of the future” for more than a decade now. 2013’s debut album Inform – Educate – Entertain used archival samples from the British Film Institute as audio-portals to the Battle of Britain, the summit of Everest and beyond. Two years later, The Race For Space used similar methods to laud the superpowers’ rivalry and heroism in orbit and on the moon. In 2017, joined by voices including Manic Street Preachers’ James Dean Bradfield, Every Valley was a moving exploration of community and memory via the rise and fall of the British coal industry. Pointedly topical in its analyses, it reached number four on the UK charts. For their fourth album, Bright Magic (2021), the band take inspiration from Berlin: “It’s become an album about moving to Berlin to write an album about people who move to Berlin to write an album…”. Heralded as the band’s most varied and cerebral record, Bright Magic is an impressionist portrait of the city from the ground up, less linear and narrative than previous works, combining PSB’s use of electronics and surging guitar rock with sound samples collected in the city itself to realise the dreams of Berlin they’d constructed in their minds.

Flaming Lips

Flaming Lips

1 May 2025 - 5 May 2025

Melodically, their sound contains lush, multi-layered, psychedelic rock arrangements, but lyrically their compositions show elements of space rock, including unusual song and album titles—such as “Psychiatric Explorations of the Fetus with Needles”, “Free Radicals (A Hallucination of the Christmas Skeleton Pleading with a Suicide Bomber)” and “Yeah, I Know It’s a Drag… But Wastin’ Pigs Is Still Radical”. They are also acclaimed for their elaborate live shows, which feature costumes, balloons, puppets, video projections, complex stage light configurations, giant hands, large amounts of confetti, and frontman Wayne Coyne’s signature man-sized plastic bubble, in which he traverses the audience. In 2002, Q magazine named The Flaming Lips one of the “50 Bands to See Before You Die”.
Travis

Travis

19 Jul 2025 - 26 Jul 2025

At various points along the trajectory, Travis have sold millions of albums (just under three million of The Man Who in the UK alone); they’ve been the subject of an award-winning feature length documentary (Almost Fashionable) and Fran has elicited acclaim from Paul McCartney, Elton John and Graham Nash – songwriters whose ability to divine a timeless melody out of thin air has sustained them through the decades. ’10 Songs’ is an album that holds you in its own emotional microclimate at the outset and keeps you there. It’s also a grown-up record. ’10 Songs’ is a record about the way life comes at love and what love does to weather those challenges. “This is no rehearsal/This is the take,” sings Fran at the beginning of Waving At The Window, over an insistent piano hook, “Promises you once kept/Are going to break Every track on this album carries an even load. No passengers here. Nowhere to hide. “I write songs in an antiquated way,” explains their creator, “Sitting at the bottom of the bed, ‘pouring my simple sorrow to the sound hole and my knee’, as Joni Mitchell put it.” As a songwriter based in L.A., Fran Healy doesn’t need anyone to tell him this is no longer how it’s done. It’s far from uncommon for the credits on successful modern pop songs to feature upwards of ten writers. “It’s fine,” notes Fran, “Personally though, I’ll take ten songs written by one person over one song written by ten people. And if I feel that way, then surely someone else must do too.”

The original line-up was composed of Black Francis (vocals, rhythm guitar), Joey Santiago (lead guitar), Kim Deal (bass, backing vocals) and David Lovering (drums) and their debut album, which received good reviews and became a college hit in the US and UK, catapulted them to fame. With top 10 hits like Monkey Gone to Heaven and Here Comes Your Man, the band went on hiatus after the release of their second album before returning in 1990 with Bossanova, which reached No.3 in the UK. The band then disbanded acrimoniously in 1993, but reunited again in 2004, going on to enjoy several sold-out world tours. It is rare to hear a band that has been going for this long, and have this many albums behind them - ten records in and still no disappointments or mistaken creative left turns. You may know what to expect, but you will never get the same. Both transcendent and surprising, Mogwai are still offering solace from the mundane, supplying the soundtrack to whatever movie you are making in your head.

The band has also achieved seventeen Top 40 singles, including a staggering run of nine successive Top 20 singles and a mantelpiece full of awards. Skunk Anansie

Skunk Anansie

25 May 2025 - 25 May 2025

Skunk Anansie’s performance at Meltdown crowns an incredible 25th anniversary, marked with their most recent release: 25LIVE@25 - the 25 greatest songs from their six studio albums. Their music slips effortlessly between the confrontational and the tender, the politically charged and the nakedly emotional, the upfront and attention-grabbing and the quiet and restrained. Releasing debut album Paranoid & Sunburnt in 1995, swiftly followed by Stoosh and Post-Orgasmic Chill, they sounded and looked like nothing that had come before them. And more than 25 years later, every other band is still playing catch-up. After an eight-year hiatus, they released three more acclaimed albums: Wonderlustre, Black Traffic and Anarchytecture. Few bands inhabit the stage like Skunk Anansie. Their exhilarating live shows are a hurricane of energy, noise and personality, an exhortation to become part of something much bigger that’s impossible to resist. Skunk Anansie have frequently been described as a political band. And they undeniably are - as their anthemic 1996 track ‘Yes, It’s Fcking Political’ pointed out: ‘Everything’s political.’ But politics are just one part of what they are: Skunk Anansie address love and rejection, anger and sadness, frustration and rage. The human emotions we all share. They are still fighting the good fight, taking no prisoners while they do it.

Peter Hook & The Light have since moved through each of those albums, culminating in the Factory Records Substance compilations, and recently celebrated over four decades of the continuing influence of Joy Division and Ian Curtis with the Joy Division: A Celebration concerts where both of the band’s albums were played in full.

The Pigeon Detectives

2 Oct 2025 - 29 Nov 2025

Following on from the release of their highly-praised 2017 full-length "Broken Glances", The Pigeon Detectives have now announced plans for their long-awaited sixth studio album "TV Show". Produced by the renowned Rich Turvey (Blossoms, The Coral, Oscar Lang), "TV Show" looks to cement a rebirth within the band's own legacy. After storming the stage at countless festivals in the summer of 2022, The Pigeon Detectives quickly became one of the more talked about names on the circuit once again, feeding the public's need for anthemic indie-rock tunes after years of isolation and social distancing. Speaking about the new album, they said, "Making music together for all these years has been the greatest gift of our lives. This album gives a nod to every step we have taken on the amazing journey we have been on as five scruffy friends from Rothwell, whilst also driving our sound to new, exciting areas. Above all though it is full of absolute bangers and we just can't wait for everyone to hear it!"
