O2 Academy Newcastle

The O2 Academy Newcastle was built as a cinema in 1927 before becoming the Majestic Ballroom, in which guise it played host to many classic 60s bands; the Beatles wrote 'She Loves You' after a memorable 1963 gig at the Majestic. Following the inevitable spell as a bingo hall, it was totally refurbished in 2005 but retains many of its original features. It can hold 1620 people in its main space, or up to 380 in Academy 2. Besides live bands it now hosts the popular club night Alpha. Newcastle station and Newcastle Central Metro are a couple of minutes' walk to the south, and the venue is served by the 84 bus route. The nearest car parking is at Fenkle Street (toll) and Waterloo Street (free after 6.30pm.)

Faye Webster isn’t afraid to tell you how she feels. Rooted in a familial lineage of folk, 21-year-old songwriter Webster’s forthright, exposed lyricism pays homage to the great Americana traditions of songwriting while drawing from Webster’s own experiences immersed in Atlanta’s hip-hop scene. Her carefully-cultivated sound organically mingles that inherited country and folk with her time immersed in rap collective Awful Records, injecting the traditional with a clandestine jolt. A decorated photographer as well as a musician, Webster’s artistic mediums don’t intertwine, instead running parallel to one another. The through-line is her exceptional knack for direction, an assured confidence in her own point of view.
