The List

O2 Institute

The Institute has come a long way since it was opened in 1908 as Digbeth Institute, a Methodist congregational chapel. Since then it's served as a variety hall, civic building and film studio, but since the 70s it's been a music venue, hosting performances from Pink Floyd, Joni Mitchell, the Arctic Monkeys and the Cure. A £4m refurbishment in 2010 has given it three performance areas, the Institute itself (1500 seats), the Library (600) and the Temple (300). Birmingham New Street and the Bullring are a few minutes' walk away, and the venue is virtually opposite Birmingham's new Coach Station, with buses to most areas of the country.

The K's

27 Jun 2025 - 8 Aug 2025

The K’s: Jamie Boyle (vocals/guitar); Ryan Breslin (guitar); Dexter Baker (bass); Jordan Holden (drums). These four young men are a word-of-mouth phenomenon that’s rapidly becoming too huge to ignore. On the surface, the appeal of The K’s seems simple: embodying the relatable frustrations of everyday Britain and its zero hours economy, yearning for a better life in escapist anthems like epic next single Landmines and breakthrough tune Glass Towns. But if creating timeless thrills really was so simple, other bands would rack up so many streams and routinely sell out tours, thanks to the frenzied fan community the band has nurtured. Their gigs are a guaranteed riot, but that shouldn’t overlook the sophistication that gives The K’s the immediately identifiable blueprint all special bands soon develop. Debut single Sarajevo is one of the few rock & roll songs to namecheck Austro-Hungary, notching up over 1.5 million streams in the process.
Cast

Cast

30 Oct 2025 - 5 Dec 2025

Originally formed in 1992 from the ashes of The La’s and Shack, Cast released four albums and had ten top 10 singles before disbanding in 2001. As one of the most traditional guitar bands to emerge during the Brit-pop era of the mid-'90s, Cast have carved out a sound that was heavily indebted to the British Invasion of the early '60s, yet it was infused with a mystical, pseudo-hippie lyrical sensibility, which lead singer John Power expanded upon in all of his interviews. What really made Cast into a success was Power's gift for simple, classic pop hooks, as demonstrated on the hit singles "Fine Time," "Alright," and "Walkaway." Cast became a very, very popular band within Britain following the success of Oasis and Blur. Labelled ‘The Who of the 90’s’, Noel Gallagher once described watching Cast play live as “a religious experience.”

Hothouse Flowers

29 Jun 2025 - 21 Dec 2025

Since the release of their last CD, 'Into Your Heart' Hothouse Flowers have been playing steadily around Ireland, America, Great Britain, Japan and Europe. Their shows last between two and three hours depending on the level of fever in the room. Most recently their sound has been enhanced and reinvigorated by the return of Peter O’Toole on bass, bouzouki and vocals. Drumming with the band these last ten years is Dave Clarke. Dave has been a drummer in Dublin since the beginning. His commitment to the beat is mesmerizing. His style has been a force in the direction of Hothouse Flowers today. Also playing with the band these days is Dorset man Martin Brunsden on double bass and backing vocals. His musicality adds yet another dimension to the ever evolving sound of the band. There is an unpredictable energy in the band that harkens back to the 'Risk' days. They call upon their grand repertoire to create a show that is unique to the time and place. No two shows are the same. Improvisation can come at any point and allow the men express their brightest and their darkest influences. 'Rock and Roll is not about safety or politeness, it is not about perfection either. It is expression and it is spirit.' Humour is also never far from a Hothouse Flowers night. They do not take themselves seriously however, there is no mistaking the musical integrity among them as they open up to each other in musical dialogue. Fiachna, Liam and Peter are traditional musicians. This allows for moments of ancestral connection. What was a second before a Doors-like workout, becomes an earnest and a timeless offering to the memory of Currachaí na Tra Báine. A song inherited by Fiachna describing the blow inflicted upon a community and a family due to drowning. This moment and moments like these set the Flowers apart from almost any other band of their time and trade. They are carriers of Culture and all of what that entails. Hothouse Flowers came out of tough times. They played the streets and brought the streets to the stages of the world. Individually Fiachna and Liam are enjoying a broadening of their horizons. Fiachna has been producing and presenting radio and television programmes and working as a composer of music for television. Liam has been collaborating with the Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre Company. Still Hothouse Flowers has not yet fulfilled her destiny. The possibilities are endless. The will is there. Ni fada go bhfeicfear.

That was hardly two years ago, and Ocie has been busy, releasing both an EP and their debut full-length album We Fall In (Nettwerk Music Group), playing with the likes of Mason Jennings, Sons of the East, Kim Churchill, Roo Panes, Current Swell and Joseph, touring Canada, US, and Europe and having their song “Run To You” featured on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy. In the challenging internet age of streaming music, Sierra and Jon have cultivated a fast-growing following by releasing a captivating series of live acoustic videos on Facebook recorded in the cozy confines of the couple’s Honda CR-V (which, Sierra explains, offers “organically well-rounded and self-contained” acoustics which lend an intimacy to their intricate harmonies). The novel approach has paid off, with a million streams of their most popular tracks on Spotify and Apple Music, as well as sold-out shows. With gentle acoustic chords layered over gorgeously complementary voices, which intertwine in gentle harmonies, Sierra and Jon’s beautifully written songs explore, of all things, love and connection. The duo has been aptly described by one reviewer as “...the aural equivalent of indigo painted skies and the first summer stars."

Spanish Love Songs

Spanish Love Songs

22 Oct 2025 - 23 Oct 2025

Produced by the band and Collin Pastore (Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker, Illuminati Hotties) and mixed by Carlos de la Garza (Paramore, M83, Best Coast), the 12 songs on No Joy find Spanish Love Songs grappling with the messiness of what it means to be alive in the modern age unsure of the answers themselves but confident that together, we can all come a little closer to the solutions. 'It may not immediately obvious on an album called No Joy, but I've grown bored with the darkness' Shares vocalist Dylan Slocum. 'I've spent three years finding out that all of my grand plans cannot stop the world, my complaining doesn't make me happy, and the happiness I do find is finite. This is an album about making peace with that.' The band has reconvened with the same energy, and are holding onto this as long as they can. 'We've torn the band down and built it back up to record the exact album we've been wanting to make. And we've ultimately arrived at the next stage of the bands evolution.' If Brave Faces Everyone was about mustering up the strength to barely break even in an increasingly bleak world, No Joy is finding the internal peace required to stay in the black. As Slocum says, its an album about finding happiness in what you have and your current moment. It might be your best moment, or it might not, but you have to find joy in it.

Sunday (1994)

Sunday (1994)

6 Nov 2025 - 20 Nov 2025

Live Nation Presents Sunday (1994) Plus Special Guests Sunday (1994) is a story of love. A love that turns lonely long-haul flights into emotional dramas, and bad apartments into settings. A love that starts with a meet-cute and never ends. A love that was born out of music, bonded by music, and now explored in music. Sunday (1994) is a soundtrack. A collaboration 10 years in the making, Paige Turner and Lee Newell knew they would make music together the second their relationship started. Without ever needing to discuss the sound, style or direction it would take, theirs is the effortless artistry that comes from total trust and honesty. Both musicians saved their best work and tenderest lyrics for this moment, finally exhaling them in the catharsis of this new project. All coming to fruition and entering the world outside of their one-bed apartment like two characters walking onto the screen, Sunday (1994) are ready for their premiere. Along with their enigmatic, anonymous drummer, x, their sound is cinematic in the truest sense. Its music you can imagine characters running through airports to, racing after love. Theyre songs for bedroom floor tears or the first time two hands touch. Its a release that captures a love story, and every love story that has ever and will ever happen, in all of its sweet, daydreaming and dramatic beauty.
