Alfie Moore: Acopalypse Now

Alfie Moore: Acopalypse Now

17 Apr 2026 - 26 Nov 2026

The Four Horsemen of Rising Crime, Global Warming, AI and Culture Wars are galloping towards us. Are we on the road to hell? And can we avoid the potholes? In his brand new tour show 'Fair Cop' Alfie has the antidote to the breakdown of law and order, fake news and the price of baked beans. Somewhere in a parallel universe little Alfie’s natural comedic performance skills were recognised by his doting parents who encouraged and developed his blossoming talent. After several years as a stage school brat Alfie’s angelic face was launched on stage and screen and the rest is history. Meanwhile, in this universe Alfie Moore was told to stop messing about in class before being ‘encouraged’ into the grinding, grimy world of an apprenticeship in the Sheffield steelworks. When recession hit he traded steel for copper by joining Humberside Police. In his 40s the two universes collided when Alfie made a bid for showbiz success – but unfortunately 30 years of shift-work and being punched in the face quite a lot, had left him with ‘a face for radio’. A face not so much ‘lived in’ as inhabited by a settlement of squatters with little regard to property maintenance and repair.

Laundry

Laundry

11 Oct 2026 - 11 Oct 2026

4 characters, 4 stories Laundry is written by the Palace Theatres resident creative writing teacher Chris Woodhouse. It comprises four monologues, linked by various activities associated with doing the laundry. Edna, Bernard, Terence and Bettina are all busy with the task in hand but what are they thinking about? These characters do not know each other and have completely different tales to tell but there is more that links them than it seems. It probably isnt wise to wash your dirty linen in public! Internal narrators take mortal form in this first ever production of newly written drama, Laundry. They air the stories of Edna, Bernard, Terence and Bettina as each character is busy managing various aspects of their laundry. They may be simply ironing, sorting or sewing on a button or two but are innocent, everyday activities the sole preserve of blameless, ordinary people? It seems not. Secrets, sorrows, flaws and failings all come out in the wash as these four stories unfold and although the clothes might end up clean, none of these characters comes out whiter than white. Chris Woodhouse has been teaching literature based and creative writing courses to adults for some thirty five years but although she has written a fair amount of fiction it is rarely shared. This monologue series, Laundry, is an exciting, if nerve wracking, return venture into the world of theatre and its production carries with it a sense of throwing caution to the winds. Time is ticking. None of us is getting any younger. Why not risk sharing a few tall tales?
The ContraBand

The ContraBand

16 May 2026 - 16 May 2026

Five piece outfit The ContraBand bring fabulous vocal harmonies to a concert of great songs their audience will love. This show is an opportunity to enjoy two full sets of songs by artists like The Beatles, the Eagles, Lindisfarne, Chris Isaak and many more, covering a timespan from 60s to the 90s and beyond! The ContraBand is a five piece unit that grew from several different musical encounters. Long established vocalist Barry Palmer met Paul Woodhouse through Pauls guitar club. Consequently, through various activities and musical groupings in which they were involved, the five got together to form The ContraBand. Gareth, Chris, Paul, Lesley and Barry pop up locally in several line ups including the Time and Tide and Take 2 duos, the Street Harmony trio and the One Accord vocal performance group and it is through this rich mix of experience, style and repertoire that they create their distinctive, unique sound, especially the blend of vocal harmonies their audiences love. The ContraBand had a very successful 2025 that included several outdoor shows so in planning events for 2026 they decided it was high time to offer their fans - and all the friends they havent yet met - a full indoor concert in a fabulous venue. Stage Left at the Palace Theatre, Paignton, was the obvious choice. This show is an opportunity to enjoy two full sets of songs by artists like The Beatles, the Kinks, the Eagles, Lindisfarne, Chris Isaak, Nik Kershaw and many, many more, covering a time span from 60s to the 90s and beyond. It promises to be a real treat for any pop music lover, offering a collection that ensures variety of sound, style and song that has something for everyone. This event will take place in STAGE LEFT

Torbay Literary Festival: Merlin Holland
Merlin Holland Oscar Wildes only grandson offers his insight into his grandfathers life, and most uniquely after-life. Fans of Oscar Wilde will never have a greater opportunity to learn, first hand, about what has been described as one of the most important books about him for fifty years. After Oscar exposes the decades of sensationalism and conjecture surrounding the Wilde family. It explores this from both the perspective of the aftermath of his death but also with a 21st century view from a world where many cannot now possibly conceive the shock his trail caused documenting a century of homophobia within the British establishment. For decades Oscar was anything but the gay icon or celebrated playwright and writer that he is today. We are honoured to be joined by Merlin Holland, Wildes only grandson who has travelled to us from France to a part of Devon where Wilde once lived (now Torquays Osborne Hotel). This will be a very special occasion. Wildes afterlife remains almost as rich and entertaining as his life. The Guardian. One Accord intersperses its harmony work with solos, duets, women and men only songs, providing variety and showcasing individual talents. One not to miss! One Accord is a small, select vocal performance group that prides itself in offering much new material every year in its summer concert. Based in Torbay, it is an independent, self run choir that draws on the expertise and experience of Belinda Byers, who writes and teaches her own arrangements of much of the material so that the group performs a distinct and unique repertoire. In its Stage Left concert the audience can expect a typically wide range of songs to entertain them, from some well known standards, a little musical theatre and modern pop songs to a specially arranged medley of Motown hits. All singing and accompaniment is completely and refreshingly live, with not a single backing track to be heard. Unusually in choral performance, the programme also includes work by individual group members, performing solos and duets that vary the experience and showcase the talents of One Accord members, some of whom have been singing together for twenty years, others who have joined very recently. One Accorders aim to share their love of singing together every time they step from the comfort zone of their rehearsal room into the slightly scary but thrilling world of live performance. Torbay Literary Festival: A.N Wilson, The Wise and Their Works
The Wise and Their Works celebrates the 175th anniversary of the Great Exhibition in 2026.The men who inspired the Great Exhibition of 1851 - Henry Cole, Sir Robert Peel and above all Prince Albert himself - were at the centre of an extraordinary combination of manufacturing, commercial skill and political vision which made Victorian Britain an unparalleled success story. In his celebratory book, A. N. Wilson examines the legacy they left behind: their idealistic beliefs about free trade, decency and parliamentary democracy, and their ultimate vision of the human race at peace with prosperity spreading, while poverty and warfare were consigned to history. While their loftier ambitions may not have come to pass, these enterprising men did leave behind a little known but hugely influential organisation, the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851, which still supports industry, science and art in the UK. Skillfully delving into this rich and fascinating history, Wilson will take us on a journey into the heart of the progressive Victorian dream, and where it has left us today. A.N. Wilson, one of our greatest, men of letters will be signing books after his interview and you can e-mail him questions in advance to: [email protected] For further information please visit www.torbayliteraryfestival.co.uk 11am- 13:00 Friday 14 August 2026 (Main Stage) 28.00

Musings and Lyrics: An intimate evening of songs, stories and silliness in the company of Nik Kershaw. Nik Kershaw exploded onto the UK pop scene in 1984. A string of global hit singles including Wouldnt it Be Good, The Riddle and I Wont Let the Sun Go Down on Me saw him languish for 62 weeks on the UK Singles Chart, making him the UK's biggest selling solo artist that year. In 1985, he performed at Live Aid. After stepping out of the limelight to concentrate on writing and producing, Nik wrote Chesney Hawkess The One and Only and collaborated with Elton John, Lulu, Petula Clark, The Hollies, Ronan Keating, Jason Donovan, Let Loose, Sia, Imogen Heap, Gary Barlow and Bonnie Tyler. In 1998, Nik returned to performing and has been crafting critically acclaimed albums ever since. Now hes ready to look back with an intimate evening to coincide with the release of his new book. Expect songs, stories, and silliness from one of the nations most-loved performers.
