The Blockheads

The Blockheads

13 Jun 2025 - 6 Dec 2025

Formed in 1977 to promote Ian Durys’ album ‘New Boots and Panties’ on the first Stiff Records tour of the U.K. Chaz Jankel, Norman Watt-Roy, Charlie Charles, John Turnbull and Mick Gallagher became known as ‘The Blockheads’ (a reference to a song on Ian’s album). As ‘Ian Dury & The Blockheads’ they went back out on tour, this time without Chaz Jankel, and in 1978 released ‘What a Waste’ a single that reached number five in the U.K. charts. They were then joined by saxophonist Davey Payne and toured the U.S.A supporting Lou Reed across North America ending with their own dates in California (with backline roadie Pete Rush) In late 1978 Chaz returned to the fold and composed ‘Hit me with your Rhythm Stick’ with Ian. The band recorded it in The Workhouse Studios, Old Kent Road, London and in 1979 had a number one hit record with it in the U.K. Ian Dury & The Blockheads went on to record the ‘Do it Yourself’ album and toured Europe and the U.K. recording ‘Reasons to be Cheerful, Part 3’ in Rome. Released as a single in late 1979 it reached number three in the U.K. charts. In 1980 Chaz, once again, left the band to pursue solo projects in California and Wilko Johnson joined Ian, Norman, Johnny, Charlie, Mickey and Davey to record and release a third album for Stiff Records called ‘Laughter’ and released ‘I Want to be Straight’ and ‘Supermans Big Sister’ as singles. They toured throughout 1981 in the U.K and Europe, sometimes augmented by Don Cherry on trumpet, ending the year with a tour of Australia. In 1982 Ian Dury & The Blockheads disbanded and were not to play together again until 1987 when they went out to Japan in June to play three shows in four days, disbanding again until 1990 when the death of Charlie Charles in September of that year re-united them to play two Benefit gigs in aid of Charlies’ family. Chaz returned from America and Steven Monti picked up the drumsticks for the hottest ticket in town. The band, now augmented by Merlin Rhys-Jones on guitar and Will Parnell on percussion, recorded a live album ‘Warts & Audience’ in December 1990. Chaz returned to California and the band toured Spain in January 1991. Once again the band stopped working until August 1994 when, with the return to England of Chaz, the band were invited to play the Madstock Festival in Finsbury Park in August which led to a series of hit and run gigs in Europe, Ireland, the U.K.and Japan throughout the rest of 1994 and 1995. In March 1996 Ian was diagnosed with cancer and, after recovering from an operation, was determined to write another album.
Fat Dog

Fat Dog

1 Nov 2025 - 1 Nov 2025

Fat Dog’s particular brand of chaos seems a fine antidote to the remains of pent-up lockdown frustration. The collective scream has found a mouth; the potential energy has been activated. Joe’s singing, his words slurred and distorted in the time-honoured tradition of delta bluesmen, melds to Jazz’s wordless vocals, high and keening like some punk banshee princess, equal parts Grace Slick and Yoko Ono.
The Selecter

The Selecter

Bad Manners

Bad Manners

22 May 2025 - 30 Jan 2026

Fronted by Buster Bloodvessel (born Douglas Trendle), the band was formed in 1976 while the members were at school together, and among their early incarnations were known as Stoop Solo and the Sheet Starchers. None of the members had any formal musical training, not even the ability to play any instruments. They were popular during the late 1970s and early 1980s, a period when lots of similar ska bands filled the charts. Some of their hits include 'My Girl Lollipop', 'Lip Up Fatty', 'Special Brew' and 'Ne-Ne-Na-Na-Na-Na-Nu-Nu'. One of the main reasons for their notoriety was because of their outlandish, larger-than-life, huge-tongued & shaven-headed front man. Buster´s exploits got them banned from the British TV chart show Top of the Pops (which included dressing as Henry VIII and singing to a blow-up doll for the song 'Lorraine', pouring a large can of baked beans over his head, and dressing in a can-can dancer´s dress to promote their single 'Can-Can').

Thea Gilmore

Thea Gilmore

27 Nov 2025 - 5 Dec 2025

Prolific singer-songwriter from Oxfordshire whose style is strongly influenced by Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Joni Mitchell. Thea Gilmore released “Small World Turning” in 2019 - her first new collection of songs since 2017’s “The Counterweight” which was her 3rd successive top 40 album. “Small World Turning” takes a sharp musical turning of its own, many may argue a new commitment to what Thea Gilmore does best, as it’s an album with an unashamed folk flavour. An artist of enduring international acclaim (Bruce Springsteen regularly names her as a favourite) and a justly revered lyricist, Gilmore’s musical settings have taken many ingenious detours in recent years. "Murphy's Heart” (2010) arrived with a buffed-up radio sheen, 2013’s “Regardless” was luscious chamber pop and “The Counterweight” brought electronica flavourings to the table.

Ahead of an LP release on Lost Map Records, produced by Danalogue (Comet is Coming) and Kristian Capitol K in early 2018, the show described in the Guardian as 'a reminder of how vital and adventurous music can be' enjoys an emphasis on candid interaction, humility and warmth. Based in underground East London's Total Refreshment Centre, saxophonist and spoken word artist Alabaster DePlume creates a new band each month in his development residency Peach.
Lambrini Girls

Lambrini Girls

19 Nov 2025 - 1 Dec 2025

Lambrini Girls + Guests Lambrini Girls formed in the swamplands underneath Skegness Butlins, a scene filled with toxicity, a severe lack of accountability and not enough gravy. Flying the nest with a dream to curate slut vibes nationwide, they became the gayest band to ever win 50 consecutive Eurovision contests in a row. Due to their massive success, they now all share a planet near earth in order for them to raise their 150 babies collectively (the father of which, is Lillys pedalboard) however, they do still practice in Brighton so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for Lambrini Girls hotspots e.g your local skip or police station. Inspiration drawn from the likes of Savages, Le Tigre, The Spice Girls and unresolved trauma; not only do Lambrini Girls plan on setting your bin on fire- they want to create spaces at shows for anyone who feels like there isn’t a place for them there already. This is a 16+ event.

Snapped Ankles

Snapped Ankles

9 May 2025 - 9 Jun 2025

They came from the trees. Now settled in fertile east London, Snapped Ankles maintain the feral energy of the forest. Fight or flight. Primal motorik rhythms, the rush of white noise and post-punk angles; an aural onslaught played out on homemade log synths, electrified guitars and sticks beating hell on taut animal skin. Snapped Ankles have flourished in the sub-tropical climes of warehouse and squat parties, moving onto performance art collaborations with filmmakers and shows in unlikely locations such as barber shops, games arcades and the forests they once called home. They plough a singular furrow at improbable angles. The woodwose have discovered electricity and they’re not afraid to use it.

Foxing

Foxing

4 Jun 2025 - 13 Jun 2025

Foxing has garnered a reputation as a band that goes big with their albums. With each release, the St. Louis-based group has appeared downright determined to top the expansiveness of their previous works. So, on their new album, Draw Down the Moon, they set their sights on the largest subject possible: The universe. Foxing are from St. Louis, Missouri.

16 Nov 2025 - 29 Nov 2025

Kris Drever originally comes from Hrossey in the Orkney Islands. Over the years, he has taught himself to be a songwriter, guitarist and singer of note (and sometimes many notes). As well as creating award-winning original songs and instrumental pieces with the trio Lau, he has had a fruitful solo career exploring the cracks between classic and modern songwriting and the traditional music that he comes from. Drever’s sound is rooted in the earthy and hypnotic rhythms of much older music, but there’s a sophistication to both the lyricism and the instrumentalism which places him skilfully in the present. He has an extensive collection of BBC R2 Folk awards, plus a fistful of Scottish NaTrads awards for everything from best album, best singer and best live act to best original song. He has worked with many excellent musicians, including Jack Bruce, Eddi Reader, Mark Knopfler, Jerry Douglas and Roddy Woomble, and is a member of the beautiful multi-media project Spell Songs: The Lost Words. Currently, Kris is preparing for a series of Lau events around the UK, writing music for a new solo album and learning some old tunes for reasons he can’t quite explain. “Utterly stunning” – fROOTS “Kris Drever is a serious talent” – MOJO £16 General Admission | £14 Concessions | £10 Under 16s We are offering a free carer/companion ticket for any disabled or wheelchair-user audience members throughout our shows this season. ABYSSAL V - PENTAGONISM. In 2025 Southampton's premier metal festival returns to Papillon with wicked intentions. A fell magick awaits in the form of slow, weird and extreme metals, from near and far. Huge and stirring sounds beckon thee closer, to what was once a church... As ever, we run the gamut of slow, loud and weighty: Slomatics - Returning champions. Our 2022 headliners travel overseas once more, this time blessing Papillon with their presence. Expect thunderous baritone guitar wall and enthralling showmanship. Rock that reaches the limit. Mastiff - sludge, death, hardcore. Music for picking yourself up off the concrete after meeting it too fast. Hundred Year Old Man - Post-metal barnstormers. We were blown away by their set at ArcTanGent last year. By turns gnawing, austere and cathartic. Sugar Horse - Miserable, churning noise rock, now with 50% more Adam Curtis references! Fans of depressing documentaries will be thrilled. Uncoffined - Death-doom with a hint of Candlemass' theatrics, and a resolute focus on mortality. The long weight is almost over... Under - Paragons of queasy, lurching sludge metal with a distinctly bitter aftertaste. Best paired with a growing sense of despair. Avoid using heavy machinery. Vnder A Crvmbling Moon - Absolute crush and funereal pace guaranteed from this post-metal outfit, featuring members of The Grey who entranced us in 2023. Miserable atmospheres abound! Praetorian - Raging, hard rockin' sludge courtesy of Abyssal veteran Tom Clements of Orme and pals. Get in the pit - he'll be waiting for you. More TBA

Welly

Welly

2 Oct 2025 - 15 Oct 2025

Welly is an extraordinary character with a remarkable literary way of describing himself, his band and society. A square peg in the round hole of suburban life, Welly embraced his difference from an early age and went onto channel his observations on suburbia into songs. Whip-smart, playful, funny and terrifyingly smart pop songs to be precise. He then set about finding the perfect vehicle to pedal his wares and so formed a band and delivered a debut album bursting with democratised pop music for people that feel fun in the charts stopped at Love Machine by Girls Aloud.

Bodega

Bodega

23 Jul 2025 - 26 Jul 2025

The art-damaged Brooklyn band Bodega want to get people thinking while they boogie, and their debut album, Endless Scroll, spotlights an abrasive dance-punk sound built on shouted vocals, deep thoughts, and jumpy rhythms. While they sanded off some of the rough sonic edges on subsequent releases like 2019's Shiny New Model EP and 2022's album Broken Equipment, they kept the lyrics sharp and the music bouncy.
