“They’ve lasted because they are brilliant” Radio 2 Brothers Patrick and Gregory Kane formed Hue and Cry in the ’80s and the duo made a huge impact with the release of their debut album Seduced and Abandoned (1987) which featured their first top ten single Labour of Love. The follow up album Remote continued the trend and produced the huge hits Looking for Linda and Violently. Albums like Stars Crash Down, Showtime and Jazz Not Jazz ensured Hue and Cry’s continued successful run through the ’90s, whilst their 2005 appearances as finalists on ITV’s primetime show Hit Me Baby One More Time, featuring their version of Beyonce’s Crazy In Love, thrust the band firmly back into the mainstream limelight. No one knows how the Emperor came by its name, but it is entirely apposite for the prince among concertos. It is on a massive scale and provides some of the most exhilarating writing for solo piano in the repertory. It also includes a beautiful slow movement which was featured in the score of The King’s Speech. Beethoven’s 7th Symphony is one of the best loved of all. With its haunting slow movement, sparkling scherzo and electric finale it opens with a movement described by Wagner as ‘the apotheosis of dance’.

Perth Symphony Orchestra welcomes everyone back to Perth Concert Hall for a journey round the world, featuring five composers who were involved, to a greater or lesser extent, with the nationalist movement in music, which was spreading in the nineteenth century, growing out of romanticism. Our programme is one with which all audiences will be very familiar, including works by Wagner, Sibelius, Ravel, Smetana and Tchaikovsky.

Mendelssohn Overture ‘The Hebrides’ Mozart Piano Concerto No 27 in B flat major K 595 Beethoven Symphony No 3 in E flat major ‘Eroica’ Rory Macdonald, conductor Steven Osborne, piano The Philharmonia Orchestra, one of the world’s greatest orchestras visits Perth for the first time since 2012. The afternoon concert opens with Mendelssohn’s wonderful evocation of Fingal’s Cave on Staffa. The music almost smells of the sea with its waves and storms. Scotland’s world leading pianist Steven Osborne performs Mozart’s very last piano concerto. On the surface K595 is sunny, but under the surface there is emotional turbulence which makes this one of the composer’s most intimate and moving works. Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ symphony broke the mould of all symphonies before it. Originally to be dedicated to Napoleon, Beethoven removed the dedication when Napoleon declared himself Emperor of the French. The ‘Eroica’ is on a huge scale and features a haunting and unforgettable funeral march. It is quite simply one of the most exciting symphonies ever composed.

Tchaikovsky The Nutcracker Maxim Emelyanychev, conductor Jay Capperauld, presenter From the delicate Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy to the elegant Waltz of the Flowers, Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker conjures all the magic and wonder of Christmas – and it’s as much of a seasonal treat for classical newcomers as it is for aficionados. Tchaikovsky’s compatriot Maxim Emelyanychev invites you to immerse yourself in all the sugar, snow and sparkle of the composer’s full ballet score, as young Clara sees her beloved Nutcracker transformed into a handsome Prince, who whisks her away to the Land of Sweets. With its heart-melting melodies and foot-tapping dances – and with singers joining the Orchestra to bring his timeless classic to colourful life – this is a Christmas feast for the senses.

Suddenly the sun breaks through, the birds sing – and to a dancing rhythm and a flurry of drums, Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony is on its way. Sounds fun? Calliandra Productions presents Jethro Tull In Concert Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull are one of the world's most successful and enduring Progressive Rock bands. The Jethro Tull brand continues to this day, as writer, producer, flautist, vocalist and occasional guitarist, Anderson leads the band with boundless energy. He will be accompanied by long-standing Tull band musicians David Goodier (bass), John O'Hara (keyboards), Scott Hammond (drums) and new boy Jack Clark (guitar). The show will be enhanced by full scale video throughout. This tour will feature examples from the full Tull catalogue from 1968 right up to the 2025 release, Curious Ruminant.
