“They’ve lasted because they are brilliant” Radio 2 Brothers Patrick and Gregory Kane formed Hue and Cry in the ’80s and the duo made a huge impact with the release of their debut album Seduced and Abandoned (1987) which featured their first top ten single Labour of Love. The follow up album Remote continued the trend and produced the huge hits Looking for Linda and Violently. Albums like Stars Crash Down, Showtime and Jazz Not Jazz ensured Hue and Cry’s continued successful run through the ’90s, whilst their 2005 appearances as finalists on ITV’s primetime show Hit Me Baby One More Time, featuring their version of Beyonce’s Crazy In Love, thrust the band firmly back into the mainstream limelight. A number of successful album releases and accompanying live appearances followed which included Open Soul (2008), Xmasday (2009), Bitter Suite Again (2010), Hot Wire (2012), Remote: Major to Minor (2014), September Songs (2015), Pocketful of Stones (2017). To date Hue and Cry have sold in excess of two million records worldwide. In 2019, Hue and Cry sold out their Summer Nights at the Bandstand show at Glasgow’s Kelvingrove park within forty-eight hours and finished the year by playing live all over the UK. With the global pandemic bringing live touring to a halt during 2020/21, Hue and Cry introduced their pioneering Live from Lockdown streaming shows which were broadcast live from the band’s Glasgow based studio and viewed online by thousands of fans around the world. A collection of their favourite tracks from these shows was released as a Best of Lockdown album (2022). Hue and Cry have sold tens of thousands of concert tickets worldwide. As well as performing alongside some of the greatest artists in music history – appearing with U2, James Brown, Madonna, Al Green and Van Morrison to name but a few – the band have undertaken a multitude of their own headline tours and made numerous festival appearances. The incredible ‘Showstopper! The Improvised Musical’ have announced more tour dates and West End shows throughout 2025! Spontaneous musical comedy at its finest, this is the first ever long-form improv show to have a full West End run and to be nominated and win an Olivier Award. For those who haven’t yet experienced the live phenomenon that is ‘Showstopper! The Improvised Musical’, the show is a fully-realised musical created on the spot from audience suggestions. The cast take ideas for settings, genres, musical styles and the show title and weave it into ingenious storylines with hilarious characters. From Lin Manuel Miranda to Stephen Sondheim, whether it’s set in a primary school, Ancient Egypt, or a mattress shop – if the audience thinks it, The Showstoppers can turn it into a hit musical. The majority of the cast also have much acclaim with founder member Ruth Bratt being part of the famous Comedy Store Players, the longest running impro show in the country; Pippa Evans being a regular on BBC Radio 4, has toured with I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue and wrote ‘Now That's What I Call A Musical!’ (that’s currently on UK tour). The pilot of Hopping, a new comedy from Lucy Trodd and Susan Harrison, aired on BBC Radio 4 and Matt Cavendish appeared on this year’s Royal Variety Performance with Mischief Theatre's ‘A Comedy About Spies’. Co-founder Adam Meggido directed the West End and Broadway hit show Peter Pan Goes Wrong. The incredibly talented West End star Miracle Chance (Roald Dahl’s The Witches at the National Theatre, Veronica Sawyer in Heathers at The Other Palace) has just joined the cast. The Showstoppers also regularly run improvisation workshops and courses for beginners and professionals and have a successful podcast - The Showstopper! One of Ireland's most popular music acts, The Tumbling Paddies are now coming to England! Song writing and original material is a major part of their success. Beethoven Coriolan Overture Dvořák Cello Concerto Tchaikovsky Symphony No 4 Alpesh Chauhan, conductor Johannes Moser, cello Beethoven’s gripping musical portrait of the ill-fated Roman general, Coriolanus, announces the arrival of one of Germany’s most distinguished orchestras, under leading British conductor Alpesh Chauhan. They’re joined by Johannes Moser, a German-Canadian virtuoso with an irresistible spirit of adventure, for Dvořák’s passionate Cello Concerto, whose emotive themes of love and loss are played out in an expansive, symphonic soundscape. Bringing the concert to an emphatic close is Tchaikovsky’s fiery Fourth Symphony. Born out of the wreckage of his doomed marriage, it bares its soul in a tumult of emotions, announced by an arresting fanfare signalling the malign forces of fate. Brahms Hungarian Dances Nos. 1, 5 and 17 Mozart Piano Concerto No. 21 Manu Martin Lim Fantasy of Companionship for Piano & Orchestra Ivan Nebesnyy Suite from the ballet Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors Dvořák Symphony No. 7 Theodore Kuchar, conductor Mark Bebbington, piano This welcome visit by the heroic Ukrainian National Philharmonic Orchestra, under their fellow countryman, conductor Theodore Kuchar, begins exuberantly with three of Brahms’ lively Hungarian Dances. There’s an elegant contrast as popular British pianist Mark Bebbington performs Mozart’s best-loved Piano Concerto No.21, whose ethereally beautiful slow movement acquired the nickname, the ‘dream andante’. Two imaginative contemporary works add contrasting colours and textures to the programme. Ivan Nebesnyy’s music for the ballet, The Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors captures the fantastical spirit of this Ukrainian story of star-crossed lovers, whilst Manu Martin’s Lim Fantasy of Companionship for Piano and Orchestra is a joyful exploration of the meeting point between humanity and robotic technology. The finale is Dvořák’s tautly dramatic Seventh Symphony. Inspired by hearing Brahms’s turbulent Third Symphony a few months earlier, it’s the most compellingly urgent of all his symphonies, its smouldering intensity catching fire in a thrilling mix of soaring melodies and driving rhythms.

It was the artistic equivalent of raising the Titanic...When Gustav Mahler died, he left a vast final symphony tantalisingly incomplete. Five decades later, musicologist Deryck Cooke did the impossible and brought it to life, uncovering a lost masterpiece filled with puzzles and allusions - music in which cries of love and cries of pain resolve in music of shattering honesty and heartbreaking power. This is art that explores the great questions of life, and tonight, popular guest conductor Antony Hermus returns to guide us to the heart of Mahler’s final musical testament. He prefaces it with something unfamiliar, but wonderfully appropriate - a haunted, restless meditation on loss, Mahler and mortality by the remarkable Dutch composer Willem Jeths.

But that’s why it’s a classic; it always has something fresh to say. It’s perfect, in other words, for Raphaela Gromes, a cellist whose aim (she says) is to “immerse myself completely in the piece, to serve the music, to communicate it to the audience”. And perfect, too, for a conductor with the insight and stature of Michael Sanderling, who concludes the concert with Bruckner’s epic Third Symphony.
