Yarwell and Nassington Britannia Band

Yarwell and Nassington Britannia Band

13 Jun 2026 - 13 Jun 2026

The Yarwell and Nassington Britannia Band performs an entertaining programme of well-loved brass band classics, including tunes from the large and small screen, traditional marches and hymn tunes. Tunes that you will know and love. The band comprises of a group of players of all ages. We are particularly proud of our younger members, 5 are currently in the National Childrens Brass Band. Others have gone on to play for the top bands in the country including Black Dyke and Corey. The bands musical director, John Hudson, joined the band in 2017 having played with both Grimethorpe Colliery Band and the John Fosters Black Dyke Band. The present-day band comprises of a group of like-minded brass players of all ages, who meet weekly to make great music and have fun doing it. We perform in a range of settings, from churches to village fetes, and are proud to represent the two villages in our name in the local area. The membership is eclectic, drawing from young and old, female and male, of all classes and backgrounds. Others have moved on to play with many of the top bands in the country, including Black Dyke, Brighouse and Rastrick, Flowers and Corey. The roots of the band go back to the mid-19th century - 1847. Therefore, we can claim to be one of the oldest bands in the country. The exact origins of the band, including the founder members, are lost in the mists of time. There is no written contemporary record, but that is hardly surprising since few village folk in the early 1800s would have been able to read and write. But what is known is that the band was playing at Elton Station to mark the homecoming of local soldiers returning from the Crimea War (1853-56). Elton Station, on the Nene Valley line between Peterborough and Northampton. This event is being organised and promoted as a fundraiser in support of Peterborough Cathedral. All proceeds from ticket sales and associated event income will contribute directly to the Cathedrals charitable work, including the preservation of the historic building, the continuation of worship and music and the delivery of education and community programmes. Othello

Othello

6 Jun 2026 - 30 Aug 2026

Join The Lord Chamberlain's Men this summer for Othello, one of the most captivating and thrilling plays ever written. See it performed how William Shakespeare first saw it, as The Lord Chamberlain's Men (with a history stretching back to Shakespeare's original company) present this play in the open air, with an all male cast and Elizabethan costumes, music and dance. I know my price, I am worth no worse a place. Othello, the Moor of Venice, a respected General in the Venetian army, promotes the young Cassio to be his Lieutenant over Iago, a soldier in his service. In doing so he unwittingly sparks Iago's deep-seated hatred into terrifying life and sets in motion a horrendous spiral of vengeance and destruction that sweeps away everyone before it. As Iago weaves his web and seeks his revenge, he poisons Othello against Desdemona, who he has recently and secretly married, and turns the world upside down until Othello becomes unmoored from reality with devastating consequences. Put out the light, and then put out the light. A powerful story of deception, jealousy, and a man that loved not wisely but too well - this stunning and heartbreakingly poignant play is one you won't want to miss. Bring a chair and a picnic and prepare to be rapt and transported. Book early to avoid missing out!
