Peterborough Museum And Art Gallery

Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery is one of the city’s most historic buildings and is just a 2 minute walk from Queensgate Shopping Centre. The building contains interactive displays and galleries for all ages and the museum’s collection includes over 200,000 objects of great national and international importance. There is always something new to see in our contemporary galleries showcase nationally and internationally renowned artists as well as talented local artists. Highlights in recent years have included 'A 64 Year Conversation about Art', the first ever exhibition to exhibit work by sculptor Sir Anthony Caro and painter Sheila Girling in the same space, 'Fabric of Society' a celebration of textile works created by women from different cultural communities in Peterborough and the Open Exhibition, a reoccurring art competition which allows any artist to submit work before 3 judges which, if successful, is showcased in a professional exhibition. Squire’s Coffee House is always on hand if you fancy a bite to eat or a sit down. Entry to the museum is free (excluding advertised event days). There is no car parking on site.

The Priestgate Vaults Tour

Take part in our Priestgate Vaults Tours and venture down into the Museum's cellars. Explore layers of history rarely seen by the public and hear the stories of the people who once lived and worked within the building. Brought to life through projections and characters from the buildings history, a tour of the vaults will take you through 500 years of changing hands and uses. From the grand home of a wealthy Tudor family, to the city's first infirmary. Not all tales are for the faint of heart however, as you hear a selection of stories from one of Peterborough's most haunted buildings. The Priestgate Vaults are accessed via a steep set of stairs and are inaccessible to wheelchair users. Projections, flashing lights and loud noises are used during the tour. Tours last approximately 40 minutes. The Vaults tour in not recommended for children under the age of 8 or those of a nervous disposition.

Working with a live model or unique objects, develop your skills and own expressive style in this artist led session. Perfect for art students, beginners and experienced artists. Aimed at students aged 16 and over looking to add to a portfolio or sketchbooks, through to adults wanting to continue developing their practice in a group environment. Tutoring help for those who would like it is on hand during the two hour evening sessions. Working with the art model, the tutor will help guide different poses, additional use of props and adapt lighting set ups. Expect the poses and subject focus to be changing from week to week. You will need to bring your own drawing materials of choice, or just a pencil and eraser. There will be some large sheets of paper available to purchase. If your working method or materials will be particularly messy, please bring a mat or floor covering for your work area. 6pm - 8pm Every Thursday (Excluding School Holidays)

Drawing for Beginners - David Swinton
Unlock the artist within! Over six weekly sessions, you'll learn the five basic skills of drawing that every artist uses. Over the course you'll build the confidence and ability to create drawings you're proud of. No prior skills required to join these sessions. Sessions: 7pm - 9pm All materials and equipment are provided. Tutor: David Swinton, B.A. Hons, A.T.C 12 per person, per session While each session can be booked individually, we recommend attending all six sessions for the best learning experience and results.

Join us for a twilight guided tour of the Museum and explore our collection after hours. These in-depth tours offer a detailed look at the museums stories, from starting life as a Georgian townhouse to the present day. Discover the extraordinary tale of Sir Humphrey Orme and why there is a turtle shell hanging on our walls to how we became home to the first X-ray machine outside of London! Get a glimpse into the museums collection that explores Peterboroughs rich and vibrant history and how the city developed over thousands of years, from the Jurassic Era through to the Romans, Anglo Saxons, Napoleonic prisoner of war camps and beyond. The tour will last one hour. Please note that due to the nature of the building, this tour includes stairs and may not be suitable for those with limited mobility. Booking is essential. 10 per person 7pm - 8pm
