Wind, Tide & Oar

Wind, Tide & Oar

27 Jul 2025 - 21 Aug 2025

Wind, Tide & Oar is a compelling exploration of engineless sailing, shot on analogue film over three years. The film delves into the experiences of those who travel solely by harnessing the natural elements alone, following a diverse array of traditional boats and uncovering the unique rhythms and motivations of engineless navigation. Journeying through rivers, coastlines, and open seas, spanning the UK, the Netherlands, and France, Wind, Tide & Oar creates a contemplative space, addressing themes of ecology, heritage, traditional skills, and maritime history. Using a 1960s hand-wound camera, Wahl offers a poetic and intimate perspective on a millennia-old craft, upended by the invention of mechanised power. Through the film’s reveries, sailing becomes a means to explore our interaction with and responsibility to the environment. It invites deep reflection on our relationship with nature, our understanding of and commitment to sustainability, and our care for the world around us.

Is it purely a matter of graphic content, or something more complex? Extreme Cinema, led by Dr Connor Winterton, will examine the cultural, aesthetic, and ethical boundaries of cinema that shocks, unsettles, and challenges audiences. What makes a film ‘extreme’? Is it purely a matter of graphic content, or something more complex? Using a range of controversial case studies — including Irreversible (2002), Martyrs (2008), The Human Centipede (2009), 9 Songs (2004), and Happiness (1998) — we’ll navigate the spectrum of extremity in relation to violence, sex, trauma, and taboo. Alongside close textual analysis, the course will engage with the politics of representation and censorship, encouraging critical reflection on spectatorship, ethics, and affect. Designed for those with a strong stomach and an open mind, Extreme Cinema is not only about the films themselves, but what they reveal about society, power, and the boundaries of taste. More Than Macabre: Stephen King On Screen
A 4-week course taking you through the history of Stephen King on screen – from the horror that made his name, to the Oscar nominated dramas for which he often gets little credit. Stephen King is more than just an author, being amongst that rare breed of writers whose name and style are known even by those who have perhaps never picked up one of his (often hefty) books. Much of that has to do with the extraordinary number of film and television adaptations of his work. Indeed, although a hefty margin separates them, he is second only to William Shakespeare in terms of the number of adaptations that exist, including those with which he has been directly involved. There are classic works that have become classic films. Carrie, The Shining, Misery. There are films that some might not even realise originate from the horror master's pen, such The Shawshank Redemption or Stand By Me. You may not know Stephen King as well as you might think. But he knows you. Course Breakdown: Week 1: Carrie On, My Wayward Son – The Early Works Week 2: Stand by Him – Stephen King Branches Out Week 3: Secret Windows – The Unsung Works Week 4: Children of the King: Adaptation from the Next Generation FURTHER INFORMATION Price: £55 / £50 conc / £45 Members Tutor: Kenton Hall Booking Information: This 4 week course will run at Phoenix on Mondays from 28 Jul – 18 Aug, 7pm – 8.30pm. Exhibition on Screen: Frida Kahlo

Exhibition on Screen: Frida Kahlo

15 May 2026 - 6 Jun 2026

This highly engaging film takes us on a journey through the life of one of the most prevalent female icons: Frida Kahlo. She was a prolific self-portraitist, using the canvas as a mirror through all stages of her turbulent and, at times, tragic life. Guided with interview, commentary and Frida’s own words, Exhibition on Screen uncovers that this, however, was not a life defined by tragedy. "Seek a deeper understanding of the real Frida Kahlo..." Featuring key exhibitions and interviews with world renowned Kahlo curators, this film explores the extraordinary symbolism and themes in these personal canvases to seek a deeper understanding of the real Frida Kahlo. Using cinema to take an up-close and intimate look at her works we examine how great an artist she can be considered. Displaying a treasure trove of colour and a feast of vibrancy on screen, this personal and intimate film offers privileged access to her works and highlights the source of her feverish creativity, her resilience and her unmatched lust for life, men, women, politics and her cultural heritage. We might think we already know Frida Kahlo – the image of floral crowns, big brows and folk style clothing have made her a muse to generations – but what lies beneath the surface of this intensely passionate woman?

Leicester Jazz House return to Phoenix with a new season of performances for 2025/26, starting with John Etheridge’s Blue Spirits Trio, led by guitar legend John Etheridge, and featuring Pete Whittaker on the organ and George Double on drums. Etheridge rightly enjoys a glowing reputation throughout the jazz world and beyond and has been described by Pat Metheny as “one of the best guitarists in the world”. He is a prodigiously gifted and creative player whose approach to music can only be described as eclectic, his range being well illustrated by his years of touring and recording with Stephane Grappelli while simultaneously doing likewise with the legendary jazz-fusion group, The Soft Machine. The Blue Spirits Trio came about through John’s love of electric guitar and organ combined, and a desire for a vehicle for the bluesier side of his playing. There are plenty of typical swing elements, augmented by soulful ballads, fiery funk outings all presented with warm humour by John. “No doubting his awesome authority when he touches the guitar” – Guardian “Never wanted to be star – just a highly respected musician like John Etheridge” – Sting
