Drawn to Rocks

Drawn to Rocks

13 Jun 2026 - 13 Jun 2026

Rocks are all around us but we rarely pay close attention to them. In this relaxed drawing workshop with illustrator Vojta Hybl, we will use a range of beginner-friendly approaches to look at rocks from artistic and scientific points of view. This year also marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of James Hutton, who revolutionised our understanding of the Earth. We will echo his groundbreaking ideas and draw our way into new understandings of geology. About the Artist Vojta Hybl is a Czech-born illustrator, writer and educator living in the Cairngorms. Originally trained as a geologist and physical geographer, he started using art to share the stories hidden in rocks and landscapes in 2021. Since then, his illustration practice has grown to include all parts of the natural world. Vojta combines his scientific background with art to create illustrations that reveal the interconnectedness of everything – and everyone – on Earth. His debut book Rocks was published in 2026 by Frances Lincoln (Quarto). Some of his clients include Dynamic Earth, National Museums Scotland and The University of Edinburgh, and his writing was published by the Scottish Mountaineering Press. Wave Of The Flood album launch

Wave Of The Flood album launch

13 Jun 2026 - 13 Jun 2026

Marking the culmination of an ambitious year-long creative project, FortyFive saw Strachan release one single per month across her 45th year, celebrating both a personal milestone and the enduring legacy of the original single – the 45rpm record. Set within the striking surroundings of the Pianodrome - a unique circular amphitheatre built from reclaimed pianos set inside a historic former church - the evening promises an intimate and immersive live experience. At the launch show, audiences will hear the album performed in full, alongside the stories behind the songs - offering a rare insight into the personal experiences that shaped the record. Blending poetic songwriting with rich, acoustic arrangements, Wave Of The Flood’s music explores themes of love, loss, longing and hope. Joined by Colin MacGregor on guitar, and John McDonald on double bass, this rich acoustic sound will no doubt be stunning in this unique venue. The Pianodrome’s atmospheric setting – housed within the 130-year-old St Oswald’s Centre – provides a fitting backdrop for an album built on storytelling and emotional depth, inviting audiences into a shared, resonant listening experience.

Scotland's First Lying Down Concert - Floor Sessions with Lindsay Taylor
Scottish neoclassical composer Lindsay Taylor is launching Scotland’s first ever lying-down piano concerts, inviting audiences to rest, reflect, journal, or even sleep – surrounded by live music. The intimate, donation-based concerts see audiences lying on yoga mats around Taylor as he performs a 45-minute set of composed and improvised piano music. There is no pressure to applaud, no expectation to sit still, and no obligation to stay until the end. The concept debuted on 31st October at Edinburgh’s Pianodrome - a unique amphitheatre built from more than 40 upcycled pianos - with a last-minute, free show organised just two days in advance. Despite the short notice, the concert sold out at 40 people and received an overwhelmingly emotional response. Audience members were encouraged to listen to their bodies, journal freely, and share any thoughts or creative responses afterwards. Many chose to write poems, reflections and handwritten notes inspired by the music, which Taylor collected at the end of the performance. “The rule was: if you’re tired, sleep. Listen to your body and let it do what it needs to do,” says Taylor. “I wanted to create a space where people could slow down and just be.” Feedback from the audience included comments such as “Feeling calm and inspired,” “A kindness to tired souls,” and “The gig as a whole made me feel free.” Following the success of the first performance, Taylor has been invited back by the Pianodrome to host the concerts monthly, with three further dates announced for early 2026, the first of which being on Thursday 22nd January. Taylor, who has been playing piano since the age of eight, describes his work as “music for stillness, curiosity and honest emotion.” His live performances blend slower versions of his composed songs with raw improvisation, allowing space for both his own vulnerability and the audience’s imagination. “When I improvise, I can’t hide behind what I already know,” he says. “It lets me be really present – like a kid playing in a sandpit, but on a piano.”

Mixed Instrument Session with Freya Rae
Workshop Overview This workshop will bring together young musicians aged 12–18 to explore traditional tunes in a collaborative, mixed-instrument setting. The session will be open to players of any instrument, provided they are not complete beginners and have some confidence with their instrument. Participants will learn traditional tunes by ear, developing listening skills, musical memory, and a deeper understanding of phrasing and style. The group will then work together to arrange the tunes collectively, experimenting with harmony lines, accompaniment patterns, rhythm parts, and group dynamics. The aim is to create a supportive and creative environment where young musicians can explore traditional music while learning how to play and arrange music together as an ensemble. Why Group Music-Making Matters Playing music together is one of the most powerful ways to develop musicianship. Ensemble playing builds listening skills, timing, and musical awareness while encouraging creativity and confidence. For many young musicians, opportunities to play in informal mixed-instrument groups are limited, yet this type of setting mirrors how traditional music is often learned and shared. Learning by ear and collaborating on arrangements helps players develop adaptability, improvisation skills, and a stronger connection to the music. The workshop will emphasise collaboration, creativity, and enjoyment, allowing participants to experience the energy and excitement of making music together. About the Tutor Freya Rae www.freyaraemusic.com is a freelance musician, composer, and educator specialising in traditional music. She performs internationally and has extensive experience delivering workshops and teaching across a range of settings. Freya works regularly with young musicians and community groups, focusing on inclusive and creative approaches to learning music by ear. Her teaching encourages curiosity, collaboration, and musical confidence. Her recent work includes the creative project and album Divergence, which explores new approaches to traditional music and ensemble collaboration. Future Development This one-off workshop will act as a pilot session with the aim of developing a regular weekly mixed-instrument group at the Pianodrome. The long-term vision is to create a welcoming space for young musicians to: develop ensemble skills learn and share traditional repertoire experiment with arranging and improvisation build a musical community around group playing.

A boundary-blurring trio with Alec Cooper on sitar, Ram Tajam on banjo, and Andy Cooke on percussion, Ugandan harp and thumbpiano, our group weaves the intricate melodies of Indian classical music with the rich, percussive heartbeat of Ugandan rhythms. Sitar and banjo lines glide over polyrhythmic drumming, inviting our audiences to get up and dance or lay back and fly away. The result is a deeply textured, immersive experience—one that bridges continents, celebrates heritage, and reimagines what global fusion can sound like. Join us for an evening of theatre, live music and fearless experimentation, featuring Mythography's latest work-in-progress, alongside excerpts from the best of Edinburgh's grassroots theatre scene. A legendary womaniser with nihilistic tendencies, Don Juan runs from swarms of spiteful ex-lovers, disapproving fathers, vengeful knights-errant, ghouls and deadly visions out to get him, while finding pleasure and wreaking havoc on the way. Join us for an outrageous and farcical joy ride straight to damnation. This Way for the Damned is an irreverent, part-devised ensemble piece loosely based on Moliere’s Don Juan. Close to perfection” ★★★★★ Northwest end “One of the best and most complete works at the fringe. Dazzling” ★★★★½ A Youngish Perspective ___ Mythography is a cross-cultural collective of emerging theatre-makers based in Edinburgh. Carnyx & Co presents The Mouthpiece of the Gods
Carnyx & Co presents The Mouthpiece of the Gods: An evening of music and film featuring John Kenny with soprano Adaya Malca-Peled and sound designer Tim Cooper. In 1992 John became the first person for 2,000 years to play the great Celtic horn known as the carnyx, and has since gone on to perform and lecture with it globally. Over the past four years Adaya and John have established an extraordinary duo, exploring the voice with carnyx and the trombone. The evening concludes with “Multiplex”, a film by Kenneth McQueenie inspired by John’s music, performed live. Concert in support of the charitable company Carnyx & Co www.carnyx.org.uk Founded by John Kenny and Ian Ritchie in 1997, Carnyx & Co. is a charitable company which provides a unique interface between musical archaeology and the world of contemporary performance and recording. Following the initial carnyx reconstruction project, based at the National Museum of Scotland in 1992, it rapidly became clear that instrument recreated by John Creed is not only a masterpiece of Celtic art - it is also a unique and powerful musical instrument. Tonight will feature not only the Deskford Carnyx, but also its French and Irish cousins, the Tintignac Carnyx and Lochnashade Horn, and John’s own first instrument, the trombone, combined with the most ancient of instruments: the human voice. The finale of our programme will be the Scottish premiere of Kenneth McQueenie’s film Multiplex, inspired by John Kenny’s score for trombone, UPIC generated sound score, and live electronics. Timothy Cooper is a composer, researcher and sound engineer. His work is often collaborative, working with musicians, artists, and poets amongst others. Most of Tim’s recent work is with Haptic, a group that performs contemporary music with an early music sensibility. Together they have created a concert length show exploring the life and music of English Renaissance composer John Dowland which has been release as an album titled Shadows that in Darkness Dwell on the TNW Music label. In 2023 Tim was awarded his PhD from the University of St Andrews and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland supervised by Professor Alistair MacDonald and Dr Diana Salazar and in 2023-24 he was the Susan Manning Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute for Advances Studies in the Humanities. He works as Specialist Technician Music and Sound at Edinburgh College of Art. Kirsty Law - Scotland Unsung

Kirsty Law - Scotland Unsung

27 Jun 2026 - 27 Jun 2026

Beneath the surface of the Scotland you think you know—kilts, castles, tartan and mist—lies a deeper story waiting to be told. Scotland Unsung, a new solo show that premiered at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival by acclaimed folk singer and storyteller Kirsty Law, invites you to hear that story in full voice. At once haunting and hopeful, Scotland Unsung is a rich tapestry of traditional song, folklore and contemporary insight. Law introduces us to Scotia—a character that travels and shifts through time, place, class and gender - inspired by Virginia Woolf’s Orlando. As Scotia moves through different moments in Scotland’s past, she brings with her stories that challenge the dominant narrative: queer desire, women’s rebellion, and an interrogation of Scotland’s supernatural myths. Far from a nostalgic trip, this is a reclamation. Law uses folk tradition not as a museum piece, but as a living archive—a way to tell difficult truths, create safe spaces, and explore Scotland as a place of radical ideas, resilience, and transformation. A show made up entirely from Scots traditional tales and songs - like you’ve never heard. Kirsty Law is an acclaimed queer folksinger and songmaker, theatremaker and storyteller. From a background learning directly from some of Scotland and Ireland’s great tradition-bearers including Sheila Stewart, Sheena Wellington, Cathal McConnell and Margaret Bennett, she has gone on to explore all that being a ‘folksinger’ can mean, from making storytelling theatre using ancient material, to albums dubbed by Record Collector Magazine as ‘folk art-pop’.
