After a number of successful top-twenty singles in the UK, the band went on to score unprecedented international success with the release of the classic ‘Nightbirds” recording and the title track has now become a standard in the popular music repertoire. This success was repeated with the top-ten hit “Down on the Street and the award-winning video established the band’s personnel of Jill Saward(lead vocs), Bill Sharpe(keys),Keith Winter(gtr), George Anderson(bass) and Roger Odell(drums). With the magic Al Jarreau/Shakatak combination,the group went on to record the track ‘Day by Day’ to further international acclaim. Along with this successful recording career, Shakatak had firmly established themselves as a vibrant live act, combining astute musicianship with a sense of fun that communicated strongly with world-wide audiences. Their performance in Japan’s Budoken Hall won them a Silver Award at the Tokyo International Song Festival-other awards include the “Best Instrumental Album’ for 6 consecutive years-and other live concerts of note have been the East meets the West Border Concert at the time of German re-unificationin 1989 and the open air concert in Cape Town for the Millennium Celebrations 2000 where they played in front of 250,000 people.Shakatak have enjoyed a level of success and career longevity rarely paralleled in contemporary music – but then Shakatak is a particularly unusual group. Because of the nature of their music, their fan base is one that is far reaching while always retaining an ‘underground element’. This paradox sees the band, who are known primarily as serious jazz/funk musicians, enjoying both high ‘cult’ status and instant recognition as a household name.

In the November 2022 EFG London Jazz Festival, JBGB Events brought together The Simon Spillett Big Band, in an exclusive London performance, to celebrate a colossal musical genius of yesteryear, the late, great saxophonist Tubby Hayes, arguably the nation's best-loved jazz legend. The concert was a sensational sold-out success, with the audience enthusiastically in awe, not only of the remarkable and innovative musicianship of Simon and his energetically talented band of British jazz greats, but also discovering the musical genius of the late Tubby Hayes' superb jazz writing. There was no hesitation for JBGB Events to extend the return invitation for a second London concert in June 2023; a further sold-out concert and hence this has led to our double Spring and Autumn 2024 booking.

The Nick Costley-White Quartet combine their love and deep understanding for the jazz tradition with a fresh and contemporary approach. The quartet’s debut album, ‘Detour Ahead’ on Ubuntu Music, portrays a narrative exploring the group’s musical journey, beginning with performances which draw from the American Songbook tradition and travel through to a more modern aesthetic, inspired by the surroundings of London’s exciting Jazz scene. This journey explores sounds from many perspectives simultaneously. Forms, harmonies and rhythms are superimposed and abstracted but still retain their essential function, whilst the improvisations express the excitement and beauty of these frameworks.

Following a sensational sold-out concert in Autumn 2022 at Ronnie Scott’s we invitedTom Smith - a London based 26-year-old, saxophonist, bass clarinet, composer and band leader, to bring his phenomenal big band to Pizza Express Jazz Club in February 2023 for a Sunday Lunchtime concert for our discerning Dean Street audience. After that sold-out concert, the Tom Smith Big Band were chosen to open the 2023 EFG London Jazz Festival and again another sold out evening. So it’s no surprise that we invited them to open this, our 2024 Sunday Lunchtime Big Band series at PizzaExpress Jazz Club.

Following their sold-out inaugural Dean Street 2023 concert, it's a warm welcome return for Pete Long and his Echoes of Ellington Big Band presenting the Duke Ellington Song Book. Their long awaited and much anticipated debut concert with this 2024 show continues the now well-established Dean Street tradition of weekend big band lunchtime concerts. Blue Harlem have been widely regarded as one of the top swing/jump-blues bands on the London scene for over 15 years. Their last performance sold out at the club. They enjoy an international reputation - 2007 found them launching the 4th International Film Festival of Dubai and in 2008, they were personally invited by Baz Luhrmann to perform for the launch of his 1940's blockbuster movie 'Australia'. They have been invited on three separate occasions to perform at Highgrove House charity balls for the Prince's Trust. They have an enviable reputation as a party band, having played for society soirees all over the UK - including Buckingham Palace, Annabel's, The Sands Venue and Burgh Island. Veteran blues performer, broadcaster and erstwhile pop star Paul Jones together with the legendary guitarist John Etheridge for a night of Blues inflected Jazz. Paul Jones was lead singer with the highly acclaimed and popular band Manfred Mann in the sixties, scoring several huge hits including '5432!', 'Pretty Flamingo' and 'Doo Wah Diddy'. Subsequently, his solo career also produced a number of big hits - becoming a household name in the sixties. In the 1970’s he formed The Blues Band, featuring the music that was his first love and this group has toured consistently since. Paul was also the presenter of the Radio 2 Blues Show for 30 years.

This is an outstanding showcase for the best of the current young British based jazz musicians, one of whom will be awarded the Musicians’ Company Young Jazz Musician Award, in memory of the acclaimed first winner of the competition, Tina May and chosen by the voting audience present at the gig. The Winner receives the Company’s coveted medal, £1,000 prize and the opportunity for the band of his/her choice to perform as part of the Company’s jazz programme. From over 50 nominations, from many of the UK’s leading jazz musicians, the Company’s Jazz Committee selected six of the most outstanding young artists.

Dave O'Higgins, with his personal and recognisable style, is justifiably one of the most popular saxophonists on the UK and international jazz scene for 30 years and has 24 albums as leader under his belt. Dave's tenor and soprano sax sounds are highly personal and recognisable, with a clear sense of melodic development and adventure. With an excellent sense of pacing and presentation, he has a wide palette from Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane, Joe Henderson through to Stanley Turrentine and Michael Brecker. No stranger to Dean Street audiences, Dave has enjoyed an extended series of sold-out concerts here playing "The Blue Note Years" followed by his "Three Tenors" concerts - (the music of Stanley Turrentine, Hank Mobley and Dexter Gordon), culminating in two remarkable concerts in 2022 and 2023, playing the music of the great John Coltrane.

Double MOBO Award winning YolanDa Brown is the premier female saxophonist in the UK, known for her delicious fusion of Reggae, Jazz and Soul. YolanDa has toured with Diana Krall, The Temptations, Billy Ocean, Beverley Knight and collaborated with artists such as Snarky Puppy’s Bill Laurance, Reggae Legend Bob Marley’s son Julian, and the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra. Her debut album “April Showers May Flowers” was No 1 on the UK Jazz Charts and her sophomore “Love Politics War” released in 2017 followed suit.

John brings this long established and hugely popular band to the PizzaExpress for a rare London appearance. Gigs by this band are uncommon and each one is a riotous celebration of the fabulous music of the late Frank Zappa, played by a band of some of the great names of British music. Originally formed in 1998, for an Arts Council show, the band went down so well that a long tour was undertaken, and they have stayed together to this day. Everybody who hears this show is struck by the vitality of the music and the performance. John is joined by Steve Lodder (keys), Annie Whitehead (tbn), Shanti Jayasinha (tpt), Simon Bates (sax), Rob Statham (bs), Mike Bradley (drs).

Experience the enduring legacy of The Soft Machine, a band that has defied time and reinvented itself since its inception in 1967. With 56 years of groundbreaking innovation, relentless exploration, and boundary-pushing artistry, The Soft Machine has become a true legend, an ever-evolving force to be reckoned with. In the early 2000s, the band assembled a lineup comprised of esteemed members from its iconic 70s era, including John Etheridge, John Marshall, Roy Babbington, and Theo Travis on saxophone and keys. Sadly, Roy has retired, and we mourn the recent passing of John Marshall, whose memory will be honored in this special concert.

He’s the former music director for Dave Koz, and as well as many appearances here with Dave, keyboardist Brian Simpson is now a PizzaExpress regular is his own right, having also shared the stage here with Paul Brown and Marc Antoine over the years, as well as a number of solo performances. Brian’s shows are always great fun, as he plays his entire repertoire of his many smooth jazz hits. And there a lot of them! Playing with Brian will be Mark Jaimes on Guitar, Orefo Orakwue on Bass, Alex Bone on saxophone and Westley Joseph on Drums.

The band's style is a unique fusion of Cuban Music, African rhythms and modern Jazz. They will play both original tunes and new arrangements of the best traditional Cuban music.

Sambroso Noda, the beating heart of London’s Cuban community and flourishing music scene, has whipped up a bonafide all-star group of musicians to pay their own unique and loving tribute to the wonderful world of Cuban music.

Both guys are familiar faces at PizzaExpress Jazz Club. Oli Silk has played keys for the biggest and best in the world of smooth jazz. He has also forged a successful solo career as well, and is just about to release his 7th solo album. Former Simply Red guitarist Mark Jaimes has an equally impressive list of smooth jazz artists on his CV. Mark also released his 1st solo album recently.

For this concert, the band is going to be joined by London jazz guitar legend Dave Archer. A fine guitarist who has been a regular sideman for Giacomo Smith, guitarist for the Kansas Smitties and jazz vocalist Clare Teal. As a keen lover of Django's music, Dave will be coming to the collaboration with some of his favourite Django tunes and celebrating their influence on his distinct style. The band is co-lead led by Scottish violinist Matt Holborn and guitarist Harry Diplock and often features a selection of renowned UK musicians, including guitarists Kourosh Kanani, Ducato Petrowski, Robin Katz, Dave Kelbie and bassists Pete Thomas and Simon Read.

Horace Silver was one of the all-time jazz greats. He described his hard driving piano style and original composition approach as “meaningful simplicity”. Silver created some of the most enduring tunes in jazz such as “The Preacher”, “Blowin’ the Blues Away”, “Señor Blues” & “Song for my Father”, the evocative ballad “Peace”, and many others, while performing them in his distinctively personal “hard bop” blues and gospel style. After sell out success in the London Jazz Festival with the music of Miles Davis and later with The Blue Note Years, Chris Ingham – no stranger to Dean Street audiences, returns with his hard driving REBOP ensemble, evoking the style of Horace Silver’s music, adding their own imaginative creativity and improvisations.

Emma Johnson's Gravy Boat make their EFG London Jazz Festival debut, celebrating the release of their second album Northern Flame - a collection of new music inspired by stories of resilience, strength and light of Northern women past and present. Hailed as “one of the most exciting forces in contemporary jazz” by Trust The Doc, Gravy Boat’s music is cinematic, melodic and evocative, with their performances including stories, music and “characteristically Northern warmth and charm.” (Ian Mann).

Tracing his work from the Zappa years as a key member of the Mothers through a glittering multi-album solo career, his heavyweight collaborations (Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham, et al) and Montreux triumphs, Dukey's music provides a fantastic melodic canvas for these top players to express themselves. You can’t keep a great musician down! It’s a further return to PizzaExpress Jazz Club by singer – pianist Liane Carroll, one of our outstanding British jazz greats and perhaps the most appreciated and in-demand musician appearing for our discerning regulars. Long since her recovery from the dreaded Covid pandemic, which forced the cancellation of her Autumn 2022 concert, which led to her triumphant recovery Christmas party concert in December, Liane returns for this Springtime 2024 concert with another “dose” of her personal antidote to sadness and despondency. After her previous sold-out shows, she’s delighted we’ve invited her to return again by popular demand.

The legendary Snake Davis and Johnny Thirkell team up with mutual friend Mark Creswell for an evening of gorgeous mellow music, infused with jazz, soul and pop. Snake played the solos on Take That's 'Million Love Songs' and M-People’s 'Search For a Hero' and has recorded with everyone from James Brown to Amy Winehouse, while Johnny has played on 22 No.1 records including Bruno Mars’ 'Uptown Funk' and Katrina & the Waves’ 'Walking On Sunshine'. Touring their debut album, expect beautiful music, fascinating tales and banter.

Inspired by the funkier side of jazz and having studied alongside US saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis and internationally acclaimed jazz saxophonist Andy Sheppard, Kim’s style of performance is best described as ‘funky saxophonist meets 1940’s jazz singer’. Her all-round skills as a saxophonist, vocalist, composer, lyricist, band leader, front-person, and radio host with a natural ability to connect with all audiences, set Kim apart as a unique ‘full package’ for the very best in jazz performance. Kim has performed and recorded with some of the country’s finest jazz musicians including Pee Wee Ellis, Ray Gelato, Liane Carroll, David Newton, Ashley Slater, Antonio Forcione, with her regular band personnel including some of the most highly respected musicians on the UK jazz circuit. Kim has released two albums since 2016, with album number 3 due for release in the Autumn as part of an ongoing project ‘Brighter Tomorrow’, paying tribute to all who work in The Arts. Kim’s original music has been featured on BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 3, Jazz FM, BBC Radio London ‘live’ session, BBC Introducing plus other national, local, and worldwide radio stations.

This showcase is a unique musical fusion of Tango and Jazz, a fascinating journey from the origins of traditional Tango to the innovative proposals of Astor Piazzolla's music. Tango Jazz Quartet magically captures the harmonies and the improvisation of jazz to blend them with the melodies and rhythms of tango. The striking contrast between the vibrant and playful "milongas", the romantic "tango-waltzes" and the electrifying music of Piazzzola will not leave anyone in the audience indifferent. The band has also worked in the production of musical films: it has produced the documentary "Tango Meets Jazz" premiered at the 2020 Black Mountin Jazz Festival in Wales and the film "Centenary of Music & composer Astor Piazzola" together to Welsh violinist Xenia Porteus premiered at the 2021 Brecon Jazz Festival in Wales. Saxophonist and clarinetist Gustavo Firmenich, leader of TJQ recreated with this band the dancing evenings that were common in the golden era of the tango in Buenos Aires, where Tango and Jazz lived together although playing separately. Founded in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2009 and after more than 13 years of uninterrupted tours, Tango Jazz Quartet has consolidated its presence in the music scene of most places in the world. Declared since 2012 "Musical Group of Cultural Interest" by the Argentine Foreign Ministry and awarded the "Ambassadors of Tango" diploma by the Legislature of the City of Buenos Aires.

Featuring Mark Nightingale and Callum Au, two of the major award- winning forces in British jazz trombone playing today, this line-up is reminiscent of the fabulous melodic swinging groups of the 1950's and 60's led by J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding. Down To The Bone is Stuart Wade as producer, writer and mastermind behind the whole groove project, working with other talented musicians and co-writers to bring together a project of good grooves. Set up at the tail end of 1995 when Wade decided to take a track from the soul band he was in at the time, Think Twice, and remix it to give it a rawer and stripped down feel. The result was the Down To The Bone remix of the track 'Joy Is Free' which had great success.

Bandleader David Strahan (baritone sax) brought the group together during dark days of Covid lockdown to make online video recordings of salsa classics like Ray Barretto’s Indestructible. Since unlockdown they have been gigging hard and building up an enthusiastic following in London’s Latino and salsa-dancing communities. The band’s name comes from the words ‘mambo’ and ‘baritono’ – the Spanish for baritone. The band’s first single, The Mambarito Mambo, written and produced by Colombian vibes player and bandleader Dorance Lorza, is now available on all the main streaming platforms.
