Welcome to Polka Theatre’s new season. Following our major redevelopment, we are thrilled to be fully open for everyone to explore our wonderful, accessible spaces. We have an incredible range of shows and workshops to delight children of all ages, and remember you can also come without a ticket to enjoy our free-to-access indoor and outdoor play areas, sample the refreshments in the Café with family or friends, or browse in our new shop. Polka is a creative hub for everyone to enjoy but don’t take our word for it, come and discover it for yourself.

As they work, they are delighted to be joined by a bird, a bee, and of course, the babies! Together you will discover the sights and sounds of the garden, as your little one delights in the wonders around them. Kemi and Norah are mega-nerds through and through. They think they know a lot about... everything! But when popular boy Bentley refuses to invite them to his wrestling-themed party, they discover, to their horror, that he thinks they are dweebs! It turns out that they have a lot to learn – especially about wrestling. Together, they secretly launch a plan to become champion wrestlers, crash Bentley’s party, and prove to everyone that they are, in fact, extremely cool. Dweeb-A-Mania is a punchy, powerful new comedy which celebrates being exactly who you want to be. Get ready for flying kicks, body slams and a mind-blowing number of barbecued chickens! Dweeb-A-Mania is the winner of the Polka Playwriting Award 2025, generously funded by The Garek Trust and supported by Cockayne and London Community Foundation. Grandad is as smart and mischievous as the wily Anansi legend, a part human, part spider and the subject of many West African and Caribbean folk stories. Can he find a way to tell his granddaughter about his plans to return to Jamaica, his beloved homeland? Join our intrepid characters as they step into the unexpected in this humorous and heartfelt inter-generational adventure. With captivating songs and joyous dancing, Grandad Anansi is an uplifting tale of love, courage and letting go that celebrates storytelling and shines a light on Jamaican culture and the Windrush generation. Written by award-winning children’s author Elayne Ogbeta, Grandad Anansi is a Half Moon and Z-arts co-production: an exciting collaboration by the UK’s leading small-scale young people’s venue and touring company and Manchester’s unique venue for children and families. Grandad Anansi won Best Performance at the Manchester Culture Awards 2023. It was developed in partnership with the African Caribbean Care Group and schools in Hulme, Manchester. With a nod to the fascinating nature of penguin parenting, Well Done, Mummy Penguin is a stage adaptation of the latest picture book from award-winning writer and illustrator Chris Haughton, and an irresistible ode to family bonds and incredible parents everywhere. Brought to life by the team behind the award nominated ‘Oh No, George!’, Well Done, Mummy Penguin features daring acrobatics, integrated sign language, creative captions and heartwarming humour. Two actors and one musician - armed with seven props and a suitcase - bring a bitesize retelling of Shakespeare’s family drama of revenge, justice and moral dilemmas to life in 60 minutes. Come on a roller-coaster of excitement, humour and grief using Shakespearean verse, contemporary language and inventive staging to make the story engaging and exciting for young audiences.
