London Sinfonietta & Marius Neset

London Sinfonietta & Marius Neset

20 Nov 2025 - 20 Nov 2025

Marius Neset has spent the last two decades reimagining the sound palette of contemporary jazz. Known for his ecstatic compositional style, the Norwegian saxophonist takes a defiantly maximalist approach, placing his spontaneous horn playing alongside lush orchestral arrangements that sound like they’ve been written in watercolour. In this concert, his relentless improvisations are accompanied by the pulse and precision of the London Sinfonietta. Neset first worked with the London Sinfonietta in 2016, unleashing the dizzying orchestral sprawls Arches of Nature and Snowmelt. Calling on the illusory effect of prog-rock repetition, as well as the freewheeling harmonic changes of jazz, these pieces distort the perceived boundaries between control and chaos, observing them as one entity. Neset’s saxophone serves as a waypoint. At its most tender, it can be an anchor, pulling him into the lush arrangements built up by the London Sinfonietta. But he also uses his instrument as a point of no return. His blistering melodic lines filibuster towards freedom, escaping the contained worlds constructed in his scores. This concert also features a new piece by emerging composer Ashkan Layegh. Inspired by Persian music, Layegh’s compositions can be disorienting, like a shredded version of something traditional. He uses live improvisation to make his influences feel ephemeral - a moment in the present, rather than a reference to the past. Programme includes: Ashkan Layegh Ephemerality and Recurrence - LS commission, world premiere Marius Neset Changes - LS commission, world premiere Marius Neset saxophones Anton Eger drums London Sinfonietta Phemo Quartet

Boulez: Sonic Structures

Boulez: Sonic Structures

5 Oct 2025 - 5 Oct 2025

The London Sinfonietta celebrates the intoxicating music of Pierre Boulez, stepping into the intricate structures the French composer built throughout his career. With his meticulous, mathematical approach to sound, Boulez dismantled 20th-century music and rewired it, transforming its internal logic. In this concert, the London Sinfonietta explores the chaos within his fixed systems and the volatile consequences of depth and detail. The evening opens with a special insight into …explosante fixe…, as George Benjamin—one of the UK’s greatest living composers—deconstructs the piece live on stage using the full live ensemble and electronics to reveal its inner workings and how Boulez conceived of composition. A longtime champion of Boulez’s work, Benjamin traces its evolution from Mémoriale, the luminous tribute to Igor Stravinsky that later expanded into …explosante fixe…. Marking the centenary of Boulez’s birth, this concert pays tribute to his ever-evolving approach to composition. …explosante fixe… was supposedly completed in 1971, yet Boulez continued reinventing it—experimenting with electronics, orchestration, and emerging MIDI techniques. Originally conceived as a tribute to Igor Stravinsky, the piece became a bridge to the future, constantly reimagined for new times. Throughout Sonic Structures, the London Sinfonietta highlights both the complexity and possibility at the heart of Boulez’s music. In the second half, …explosante fixe… is heard in full, with flutist Michael Cox leading an orchestra in orbit. They respond dynamically to his playing, weaving together the piece’s network of finely-tuned arrangements. At times they are restrained to near-silence, while at others they overwhelm the listener with a blanket continuum of sound. This event offers a deep insight into the mind of Pierre Boulez—one of the most influential composers of the past century—through the artistry of George Benjamin and the London Sinfonietta. Programme to include: Pierre Boulez explosante fixe Pierre Boulez Memoriale George Benjamin conductor Michael Cox flute Royal Academy of Music Manson Ensemble London Sinfonietta
Grisey: Quatre Chants

Grisey: Quatre Chants

28 Nov 2025 - 28 Nov 2025

A rare opportunity awaits to experience French composer Gérard Grisey's stunningly dark and disorientating Quatre chants pour franchir le seuil, presented by the London Sinfonietta. This masterpiece offers a journey through intricate collisions of fragmented melody and harmony, Quatre chants pour franchir le seuil, which roughly translates to Four Songs for Crossing the Threshold, explores the boundary between life and death - a significance that is elevated by Grisey's passing soon after its completion, preventing his attendance at the world premiere of the piece by the London Sinfonietta and George Benjamin in 1999. As a pioneering figure in the spectral music movement–music intended to imitate the spectral qualities of a sound–Grisey uniquely explores sonic transformations and transfigurations, calling on microtones and rapid gong acrobatics to conjure these profound and disruptive musical worlds. The piece stands as one of the most significant concert works of the late 20th century, written for soprano and ensemble to create a meditation on death divided into four sections: the death of an angel, the death of civilization, the death of the voice, and the death of humanity. Perhaps now, more than ever, a piece for our times. Programme includes: Gérard Grisey Quatre chants pour franchir le seuil Jack Sheen conductor Nina Guo soprano London Sinfonietta

Jeremy Nedd: From Rock To Rock

Jeremy Nedd: From Rock To Rock

23 Jul 2025 - 24 Jul 2025

The Milly Rock, a viral dance inspired by the rapper 2 Milly, takes centre stage in the acclaimed choreographer’s London debut. Inspired by a rapper’s copyright lawsuit against a video game company, Basel-based choreographer Jeremy Nedd’s latest work, from rock to rock... aka how magnolia was taken for granite, explores a dance move known as the Milly Rock. Five performers examine the Milly Rock, a dance move inspired by the rapper 2 Milly. In doing so, they search for the hidden poetry and virtuosic freedom found in social and viral dance moves. Taking a look into the ‘algorhythm’ of marginalised movement languages, one asks: can a dance move belong to anyone? And, when that answer is yes, who actually profits from the move? The ticket price includes a £2 venue restoration levy. Presented by Southbank Centre. This is a 12+ event.
Alex Baczyński-jenkins: Untitled (holding Horizon)
Queer embodiment and desire, collectivity and subjectivity are all explored in this durational dance built around the simple movement of the box step. Untitled (Holding Horizon) is a choreography that continues Alex Baczyński-Jenkins’ engagement with negotiations of desire, the materiality of gestures and affections of a queer commons. Through sensual, alienated gestures and the box step - a movement used in several social dances - synchronisation, pleasure and alliance coexist with disorientation, limitation and loss. The performers affect - and become affected by - the live mixed sound and light, while repetition and duration elicit shifting perceptions and associations: a memory of a rave, a ghostly gathering, a celebration and mourning, a militant congregation. In this altered state, the box step becomes a vessel. Untitled (Holding Horizon) is a durational experience. The audience is able to enter and leave the space at their leisure Artist and choreographer Alex Baczyński-Jenkins’ practice is concerned with the mediation of queer embodiment and relationality through choreographies of affect, empathy and intimacy. The ticket price includes a £2 venue restoration levy. Presented by Southbank Centre. This is a 12+ event.
