Myrninerest: The Outside/Inside Life of Madge Gill
Directed by Dario Knight Produced by Unbound A new production of James Kenworth’s acclaimed play about outsider artist Madge Gill. Madge Gill (1882-1961) was one of the foremost British Outsider artists. She felt an instinctive compulsion to create, resulting in an outpouring that flowed effortlessly and spontaneously from an altered state of consciousness. Working under the control of Myrninerest, her spirit guide, Madge Gill’s art remains an enigma. She was born in the East End of London, and lived in Plashet Grove, Upton Park. After her death, her only surviving son Laurie gathered hundreds of pieces of Madge’s work which were stored around the house, stuffed into drawers and cupboards and under the bed. He donated most of the works to East Ham Council and are now owned by Newham Council. Myrninterest: The Outside Life of Madge Gill is the sixth instalment in The Newham Plays, a critically acclaimed series of site-specific, localist-driven plays shows rooted in Newham’s history, culture, and people. Created and written by James Kenworth, the plays are a unique collaboration between a professional creative team working alongside young actors from local youth groups/theatres. Otway & Barrett

Otway & Barrett

12 Jul 2025 - 12 Jul 2025

Otway and Barrett are back! This magnetic bond still holds after more than 50 years of attempted escapes and still loved for their total in-yer-face originality, the contrast between the dead pan humour of Barrett and mad onstage antics of Otway are hilarious to watch. John’s lyrical genius and Willy’s outstanding musicianship (he seems to play almost every stringed instrument known to man, plus a few hybrids of his own making!) Ever keen to add a new dimension to the show, Willy has a new addition to his array of instruments. Beware the Moose Homp!!. Willy’s interest in making instruments began when he commandeered two guitars made by his dad in 1965. One from an old guitar neck and a scaffold plank which became affectionally known as the Les Dawson, and the other branded the Mk1 Schitstik electric slide of similar pedigree. These instruments were used on many of the early tracks, including Really Free and Racing Cars)
