Verses, Voices

22 May 2025 - 22 May 2025

'Verses, Voices' is an hour-long performance, designed to reclaim attention for the range of brilliant British poetry produced in the 1950's, '60s and '70s. This was a period of outstanding poetic quality, variety and, most strikingly, accessibility, which has - in the years since - been neglected due to the poetry world's preoccupation with the contemporary and narrowly topical. Even more strikingly, we will be presenting these poems not in the usual poetic tradition of hushed reverence and received pronunciation, but performed by readers whose proud use of their own natural, regional accents from Yorkshire and beyond will refresh the depth, force and importance of these largely forgotten poems and poets. Directed by Felix Hodcroft and performed by Ann Gibbon, SueGrogan, Richard Kipping, Eddie Lawlor and Suzie Millar, You can book your ticket here or just come along on the day.

Ruth Abokoku: A Rehearsed Reading

Ruth Abokoku: A Rehearsed Reading

15 Jun 2025 - 15 Jun 2025

A rehearsed reading of "Ruth Abokoku", a Nigerian experimental play written and directed by Kenneth Uphopho, inspired by the final moments of Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in Britain. The play takes place in Ruth's prison cell, where she awaits her execution, having refused the offer of letters written by people to plead for her mercy. The play's structure is non-linear, fragmented, and poetic, reflecting Ruth's disjointed thoughts and emotions as she confronts her mortality. The narrative is interspersed with flashbacks, dreams, and hallucinations, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy.
